Humans are the most inquisitive, emotional, imaginative, aggressive and baffling animals on the planet. But how well do we really know ourselves? How to Be Animal writes a remarkable story of what it means to be human and argues that at the heart of our psychology is a profound struggle with being animal. As well as piecing together the mystery of how this psychology evolved, the book examines the wide-reaching ways in which it affects our lives, from our politics to the ways we distance ourselves from other species. We travel from the origins of Homo sapiens through the agrarian and industrial revolutions, the age of the internet, and on to futures of AI and human-machine interface. We examine how technology influences our sense of our own animal nature and our relationship with the other species with whom we share this fragile planet. Drawing on new evidence from a wide range of disciplines, Challenger proposes that being an animal is a process, beautiful and unpredictable, and that we have a chance to tell ourselves a new story, to realise that if we matter, so does everything else.

*A GUARDIAN 'BOOKS OF 2021' PICK* We all love animals, but does that make their lives happier? With factory farms, climate change and deforestation, this might be the worst time in history to be an animal. In an age of extinction and pandemics, our relationship with the other species on our planet has become unsustainable. What would happen if we extended the love we show to our pets to other sentient beings? What if we took animals' experiences seriously - how would we eat, think and live differently? Henry Mance sets out on a personal quest to see if there is a fairer way to live alongside other species. He goes to work in an abattoir and on a farm to investigate the reality of eating meat and dairy. He explores our dilemmas around hunting wild animals, over-fishing the seas, visiting zoos, saving wild spaces and owning pets. He meets the chefs, farmers, activists, philosophers, scientists and tech visionaries who are redefining how we think about animals. Even on a planet shaped by human activity, he discovers, we can find space to allow other sentient beings to thrive. This is not a book about what animals can do for us, but what we can do for animals. Thoughtful, provocative and witty, it is ultimately a story of discovery and hope - and of a future that might just become a reality.

The use of small animal models in basic and preclinical sciences constitutes an integral part of testing new pharmaceutical agents prior to their application in clinical practice. New imaging and therapeutic approaches need to be tested and validated first in animals before application to humans. Handbook of Small Animal Imaging: Preclinical Imaging, Therapy, and Applications collects the latest information about various imaging and therapeutic technologies used in preclinical research into a single source. Useful to established researchers as well as newcomers to the field, this handbook shows readers how to exploit and integrate these imaging and treatment modalities and techniques into their own research. The book first presents introductory material on small animal imaging, therapy, and research ethics. It next covers ionizing radiation and nonionizing radiation methods in small animal imaging, hybrid imaging, and imaging agents. The book then addresses therapeutic research platforms and image quantification, explaining how to ensure accurate measurements of high-quality data. It concludes with an overview of many small animal imaging and therapy applications that demonstrate the strength of the techniques in biomedical fields.

"Dog lovers and neuroscientists should both read this important book." --Dr. Temple Grandin What is it like to be a dog? A bat? Or a dolphin? To find out, neuroscientist and bestselling author Gregory Berns and his team did something nobody had ever attempted: they trained dogs to go into an MRI scanner--completely awake--so they could figure out what they think and feel. And dogs were just the beginning. In What It's Like to Be a Dog, Berns takes us into the minds of wild animals: sea lions who can learn to dance, dolphins who can see with sound, and even the now extinct Tasmanian tiger. Berns's latest scientific breakthroughs prove definitively that animals have feelings very much like we do--a revelation that forces us to reconsider how we think about and treat animals. Written with insight, empathy, and humor, What It's Like to Be a Dog is the new manifesto for animal liberation of the twenty-first century.

One evening while lying on our sofa watching the news on our television, the story was broadcasted describing the torture of various animals. It made me sick. From that point on, I decided to sit down and write this book, "How to Fall in Love with an Animal." Without going into great detail, I felt that it was necessary to be able to share my families' personal experiences, even though some of them were very painful, but there are some that ended in a happy ending. My story is in regards to our happy animals alongside stories that are sickening and disturbing, from individuals who do not value the life of an animal. There is always someone to blame for this pain. We as human beings are more than capable of being able to love an animal. As a matter of fact, this book will help you believe that you can make your life more cheerful and comfortable when adopting an animal. I realize that in the world today there is so much hate and evilness that follows, and there is very little that I can do besides making monthly donations that will help aid in the rescue of thousands of neglected animals. I wish with all my heart that I could do more, and I hope by writing this book that it would inspire you and help you become a better person. The love we have for our animals happens to be displayed throughout my book. I hope this book will touch a soft place in your heart. Remember, animal life is not over until we decide it's not worth hanging on to. We all must keep remembering that we are all children of God, whether it be human beings or animals.

Many of us who have pets already know - Animals can understand our feelings. They understand what we want. But did you know that you can understand the feelings and desires of your animals as well? Did you know that you too can understand the “words” they never speak but mean to say? And did you know that you don’t have to say anything out loud, because your pets can read your mind? Yes, it is true. Animals are very good at understanding non-verbal behavior. But you shouldn’t limit yourself to that. You can learn to go much beyond regular non-verbal communication with your lovely pets. You can interact with them telepathically. You can have a conversation with them. But since we’ve never used this skill, we have forgotten just how to talk to our animals. The intention of this book is to introduce you to the concept of animal communication. How do you get started? How do you need to prepare? What things do you need to keep in mind? How can communicating telepathically with your animals help you? So, let’s get started and let’s make our animals our closest friends!

How to Study Animal Minds

Comparative psychology, the multidisciplinary study of animal behavior and psychology, confronts the challenge of how to study animals we find cute and easy to anthropomorphize, and animals we find odd and easy to objectify, without letting these biases negatively impact the science. In this Element, Kristin Andrews identifies and critically examines the principles of comparative psychology and shows how they can introduce other biases by objectifying animal subjects and encouraging scientists to remain detached. Andrews outlines the scientific benefits of treating animals as sentient research participants who come from their own social contexts and with whom we will be in relationship. With discussions of science's quest for objectivity, worries about romantic and killjoy theories, and debates about chimpanzee cognition between primatologists who work in the field and those in the lab, Andrews shows how scientists can address the different biases through greater integration of the subdisciplines of comparative psychology.

Early humans recognised a profound and spiritual kinship with other species. Hunters gave thanks and even apologies to their prey. And when shamans made their inner journeys between human and spirit realms to bring back healing wisdom they applied on behalf of the tribe, animals often served as their guides and their companions. In more recent times the idea of the animal daemon has been popularised by Philip Pullman in his internationally bestselling trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials. This illuminating book explains how to connect with and channel the unique powers of 50 different spirit animals - a menagerie of creatures, from the wise owl and crafty fox to the tranquil turtle and bold lion. Each entry provides a detailed description of the animal's personality, mythology and innate powers. Helpful text provides readers with clues and meditations for discovering their own spirit animal, as well as information on how other animals can be called on to help with specific aims - from overcoming fear to finding your true destiny. This book is the perfect primer for those seeking access to the wisdom of the animal kingdom.

This book was created to awaken you to be open to the messages of the Animal Kingdom that may help lead you through life. Totem animals are the energetic representation of an animal, the animal’s spirit. Their basic foundations of inner peace and innocence already teach us so much about who we are as humans, our journey, and how to progress forward. Use this book to receive insight—look up your favourite animals, look up your pets, look up the creatures that you fear. All of these animals have messages that bear meaning for you. This book was written with the intention to awaken, inspire, and heal you by bringing forth wisdom that the totem animal kingdom contains. Totem animals really do bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual world for a lot of people. Animals are something real in their physical world, so they can relate far easier to the spiritual wisdom of an animal than an angel or ascended master. People need something in their physical reality as evidence before they believe in something or relate to it. Most totem animal spirits have a physical representation alive here on the planet for us to connect with, which makes it far easier for people to be open to and accept their spiritual aspect.
