Popular consensus says that the US rose over two centuries to Cold War victory and world domination, and is now in slow decline. But is this right? History's great civilizations have always lasted much longer, and for all its colossal power, American culture was overshadowed by Europe until recently. What if this isn't the end? In History Has Begun, Bruno Maes offers a compelling vision of America's future, both fascinating and unnerving. From the early American Republic, he takes us to the turbulent present, when, he argues, America is finally forging its own path. We can see the birth pangs of this new civilization in today's debates on guns, religion, foreign policy and the significance of Trump. Should the coronavirus pandemic be regarded as an opportunity to build a new kind of society? What will its values be, and what will this new America look like? Maes traces the long arc of US history to argue that in contrast to those who see the US on the cusp of decline, it may well be simply shifting to a new model, one equally powerful but no longer liberal. Consequently, it is no longer enough to analyze America's current trajectory through the simple prism of decline vs. progress, which assumes a static model-America as liberal leviathan. Rather, Maes argues that America may be casting off the liberalism that has defined the country since its founding for a new model, one more appropriate to succeeding in a transformed world.

These six essays present an outsider's view of Western norms of progress, rationality, and maturity, and offer an alternate perspective on oppression in modern times. Well-known psychologist and social theorist Ashis Nandy stresses the importance of considering world views held by the "non-modern" cultures of the Third World in formulating a more humane and less technologically preoccupied vision of progress. Institutionalized oppression is seen as a process which co-opts the physical and psychological worlds of its victims and destroys the basis of all dissenting visions of a just world. Concluding with an essay on Gandhi and his critical reaction to Western civilization, this book is an important contribution to political science, sociology, psychology, and South Asian studies.

Designed to provide a general assessment of the rapidly growing applied humanities movement in the United States, this report sets forth issues found to be central to an assessment of current work in the applied humanities, presents a general survey of the nature of applied work in a variety of disciplines, and offers conclusions and observations about how high-quality work in applied humanities can be nurtured and supported in the future. The first of seven sections presents an introduction to issues surrounding the applied humanities movement. The second section examines basic features of current debates related to the humanities by examining three historical developments--Greek thought in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.; individualism and the reaction against tradition emerging after the Reformation in the West in the 17th and 18th centuries; and professionalization and institutionalization, which began toward the end of the 19th century, reaching maturity during the 20th century. Section 3, "Current Work in Applied Humanities," discusses philosophy, applied and public history, and literature. Section 4 presents models of application while section 5 deals with fields of application--specifically the humanities and the biomedical sciences, humanities and the social sciences, and public policy and the policy sciences. Academic preparation and disciplinary standards are the focus of the next section. The final section summarizes the hopes, problems, and needs of the humanities as a serious discipline of study.
