'A fearsome satirical blast’ Sunday Age Sydney, 2001: Hugh Walker has it all. He’s a successful young lawyer with a beautiful girlfriend and a million dollar office view… So why does he identify more with his resident cockroach than Atticus Finch, his childhood hero? Once upon a time he was the defender of the abused, the voice of the oppressed. But now he's turning a blind eye to suspect time sheets, championing the powerful against the powerless, and not being entirely honest with his girlfriend. Has his good side deserted him? Is there a way back? A bitingly satirical novel about one man’s search for his soul … in the most soulless of places. Praise for Hell Has Harbour Views ‘A sharp-clawed comedy’ Sydney Morning Herald ‘The funniest, most unutterably savage lawyer joke ever’ John Birmingham ‘Beasley exercises brutal wit in deconstructing modern angst … His spirited whistleblowing is a tonic’ Weekend Australian

Hugh Walker, 32, a successful lawyer with an attractive girlfriend and executive office view seemingly has it all. So why does he identify more with his resident cockroach than Atticus Finch, his childhood hero? Could it be because he is cheating on his girlfriend and representing greedy insurance companies instead of the vulnerable underdogs who he always thought he'd be defending? Has his good side deserted him? Is there a way back? Hell Has Harbour Views is for anyone who has, in a private moment, realised that their life has turned out differently from what they wanted and expected. Sydneysiders will recognise their own town and everyone else will laugh out loud at the overwhelming brashness of this city. Readers will chuckle and tremble at the ruthlessness of those on their climb to reach the harbour view. First-time novelist Richard Beasley gives us a biting, witty, disturbingly honest novel about the pitfalls of city life.

Legal ethics is often described as an oxymoron or contradiction in terms - lay people find the concept amusing and lawyers can find ethics impossible. The best lawyers are those who have come to grips with their own values and actively seek to improve their ethical practise. This book is designed to help law students and new lawyers understand and modify their own ethical priorities, not just because this knowledge makes it easier to practise law and earn an income, but because self-aware, ethical legal practice is right and feels better than anything else. Packed with case studies of ethical scandals and dilemmas from real life legal practice in Australia, each chapter delves into the most difficult issues lawyers face. From lawyers' part in corporate fraud to the ethics of time-based billing, Parker and Evans expose the values that underlie current practice and set out the alternatives ethical lawyers might follow.

You just know a book is going to be funny and provocative with a title like Please Don’t Tell My Mum That I Have Become a Government School Teacher—She Thinks I’m Still at Law School. But it’s more than that; it’s poignant and heart-breaking, too. Following the first two years of law student-turned-teacher Harry Mann’s new career, this novel has its roots in a raw kind of reality that exists all too often in the government school systems everywhere. Think of this book as Up the Down Staircase meets Blackboard Jungle meets To Sir with Love, all with an Australian twist. You’ll laugh, cry, and care deeply about everything that happens to Harry, his students, and his fellow teachers at Cutler High.

Comparing the major Pacific Rim cities of Sydney, Hong Kong and Shanghai, this book examines world city branding. Whilst all three cities compete on the world's stage for events, tourists and investment, they are also at the centre of distinct film traditions and their identities are thus strongly connected with a cinematic impression. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this book not only analyses the city branding of these cities from the more widely researched perspectives of tourism, marketing and regional development, but also draws in cultural studies and psychology approaches which offer fresh and useful insights to place branding and marketing in general. The authors compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative original data as well as critically analyzing current texts and debates on city branding. In conclusion, they argue that city branding should contribute not only to regional development and identity, but also to sustainable economic well-being and public happiness.

A high charge out rate by an accountant does not mean that the advice the accountant gives you is good. Bad advice can cost money too.As a partner in a law firm once pointed out - many of these issues can be traced back to the concept of time-based billing. This is a system whereby you are charged dollars per hour for the time spent on your work. The issue is highlighted in a cult novel for disgruntled lawyers written by ex-lawyer Richard Beasley called Hell Has Harbour Views. In this book, one of the characters manages to record more hours on his time sheet than there are actual hours in the day! It has been argued that time-based charging promotes inefficiencies and hide stupidity.A good accountant is worth their weight in gold. How do you find a good accountant? As a client, you may not know what to look for. You do not know what criteria you should use when appointing a new accountant. This book will tell you.

You Can Almost Sack Your Accountant

Your accountant doesn't want you to read this. Remember, paying lots of money does not mean its good advice, bad advice can cost money too! The latest bill from your accountant just arrived. You open the envelope and almost die of a heart attack! You ask yourself "How on earth can the accountant justify the size of the fee" (after all, you only run a small business). As a partner in a law firm once pointed out - many of these issues can be traced back to the concept of time-based billing. (Don't laugh - we've seen this ourselves with employees who turn up for work at 9 am, take their 1-hour lunch break, go home at 5 pm and somehow miraculously manage to clock in a 9 hour day!) Does time-based charging promote inefficiencies and hide stupidity? Possibly. Having said that, accountants are aware that an increasing number of clients look at what accountants do, rather than what accountants try to charge per hour - and sometimes, it does not compute. On the other side of the coin, should an accountant charge you an hourly rate when it's only taken an hour to resolve your tax problem and charged you, say $500 whilst saving you $20,000 in tax? One could argue that in this case, the fairer charge should be based on a percentage of tax saved. This You Can ALMOST Sack Your Accountant will explain it all ... at the end of the day, knowing what you don't know and knowing what to ask [your accountant] can save you lots of money. Or it may even give you a greater appreciation of the value provided by a good accountant.
