Poetry is many things to many people, perhaps a glimpse into the writer’s life, soul, or heart or an inspiration to create and share our own intimate feelings, thoughts, and experiences with those around us as well as with our own selves. It is the latter desire Suzanne Carr seeks to fulfill through her words in Bite Down Hard on This. Covering a variety of themes and moods, from identity and personality to the changing nature of society and familial relationships, Ms. Carr wishes to inspire young girls in particular to express themselves through language and to aim for lofty goals. “Although,” she says, “anyone can get something they might need from my work, I think women especially will appreciate the sentiments.” Having the unique ability to touch her reader with her directness, enthusiasm, and original view of life, Ms. Carr offers an expressive compilation of verse written by a woman, from a woman’s point of view, and especially for women.

Almost Legal Humor is the way defense trial lawyer Stephen R. Crislip describes his book, Down to the Hard Road. Operating upon the premise that the most difficult lawyers (or people generally) are those born without humor, he reports from the road during a series of lawyer meetings over a specific period. Utilizing the no theme approach of the Seinfeld show and the reporting style of the late Pete McCarthy, who wrote a travel book entitled McCarthy’s Bar based upon McCarthy stopping at every bar in Ireland with his name on it, Crislip humorously wanders along a lovely string of meetings in glorious places with totally random descriptions of locales, people and the silliness of the times, as subjectively viewed by a big boned boy writing from tiny seats on small regional jets. The author contends his family’s residence in West Virginia for over 218 years gives him full and absolute standing to give his West Virginia viewpoint, including the standard West Virginia directions: “Go down to the hard road until you come to the four lane and follow it to the Robert C. Byrd Freeway”.... which one, you ask, since everything in West Virginia now bears this description. In the spirit of the adventures taken, the author vows to donate all proceeds over the production costs to a community charity so that everyone who buys or reads the book can feel good about themselves -- even if they lack the humor gene, and even if they pitch the book like a disposable camera.

Introducing a major new thriller writer—in the vein of Vince Flynn and Brad Thor—and an electrifying character, Dewey Andreas. A major North American hydroelectric dam is blown up and the largest off-shore oil field in this hemisphere is destroyed in a brutal, coordinated terrorist attack. But there was one factor that the terrorists didn't take into account when they struck the Capitana platform off the coast of Colombia—slaughtering much of the crew and blowing up the platform—and that was the Capitana crew chief Dewey Andreas. Dewey, former Army Ranger and Delta, survives the attack, rescuing as many of his men as possible. But the battle has just begun. While the intelligence and law enforcement agencies scramble to untangle these events and find the people responsible, the mysterious figure of Alexander Fortuna—an agent embedded into the highest levels of American society and business—sets into play the second stage of these long-planned attacks. The only fly in the ointment is Dewey Andreas—who is using all his long-dormant skills to fight his way off the platform, then out of Colombia and back to the U.S., following the trail of terrorists and operatives sent to stop him. Power Down is a gripping, compelling debut thriller from Ben Coes, a powerful new author, an amazing talent certain to join the ranks of the genre's finest writers.

Dickens’s scathing portrait of Victorian industrial society. Coketown, the depressed mill town that is the setting for one of Charles Dickens’s most powerful and unforgettable novels, is all brick, machinery, and smoke-darkened chimneys. Its emblematic citizen, the schoolmaster Thomas Gradgrind, lives to impose his version of education: facts and statistics that feed the mind while starving the soul and spirit. Inflexible and unyielding, he places conformity above curiosity and logic over sentiment, only to see his philosophy warp and destroy the lives of his own family. Filled with memorable characters and scenes, Hard Times is a daring novel of ideas—and, ultimately, a celebration of love, hope, and imagination. With an Introduction by Frederick Busch and an Afterword by Jane Smiley

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON'S INSIDE ACCOUNT OF THE CRISES, CHOICES AND CHALLENGES SHE FACED DURING HER FOUR YEARS AS AMERICA'S 67THSECRETARY OF STATE, AND HOW THOSE EXPERIENCES DRIVE HER VIEW OF THE FUTURE, INCLUDING A NEW EPILOGUE. 'All of us face hard choices in our lives,' Hillary Rodham Clinton writes at the start of this personal chronicle of years at the centre of world events. 'Life is about making such choices. Our choices and how we handle them shape the people we become.' In the aftermath of her 2008 presidential run, she expected to return to representing New York in the Unites States Senate. To her surprise, her formal rival for the Democratic Party nomination, newly elected President Barack Obama, asked her to serve in his administration as Secretary of State. This memoir is the story of the four extraordinary and historic years that followed, and the hard choices that she and her colleagues confronted. Secretary Clinton and President Obama had to decide how to repair fractured alliances, wind down two wars and address a global financial crisis. They faced a rising competitor in China, growing threats from Iran and North Korea, and revolutions across the Middle East. Along the way, they grappled with some of the toughest dilemmas of US foreign policy, especially the decision to send Americans into harm's way, from Afghanistan to Libya to the hunt for Osama bin Laden. By the end of her tenure, Secretary Clinton had visited 112 countries, travelled nearly one million miles and gained a truly global perspective on many of the major trends reshaping the landscape of the twenty-first century, from economic inequality to climate change to revolutions in energy, communications and health. Drawing on conversations with numerous leaders and experts, Secretary Clinton offers her views on what it will take for the United States to compete and thrive in an interdependent world. She makes a passionate case for human rights and the full participation in society of girls, youth and LGBT people. An astute eyewitness to decades of social change, she distinguishes the trendlines from the headlines and describes the progress occurring throughout the world, day after day. Secretary Clinton's descriptions of diplomatic conversations at the highest levels offer readers a masterclass in international relations, as does her analysis of how we can best use 'smart power' to deliver security and prosperity in a rapidly changing world - one in which America remains the indispensable nation.

Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King, is an ordained minister, an attorney, and one of this country's most admired speakers. As this remarkable collection of her sermons and speeches makes clear, she shares with her father a rare gift for oratory and the wisdom and compassion to inspire others. The collection begins with words designed to "disturb the comfortable." Tackling such controversial subjects as our disaffected youth, gun control, and the death penalty, King paints a compelling picture of the spiritual decay and deep-seated racism that infects our society. In the second part of the book, a selection of sermons focusing on "comforting the disturbed," King's belief in the power of faith to restore our communities, morally and spiritually, rings forth. The church, she asserts, must return to its helping and healing mission, and each of us, looking into our hearts, must put aside our differences and remember that each human life is precious.

The family today is redefined by many parameters, social-psychological, political, and legal ways. The biblical definition of the family has been polluted by immoral and excessive social and legal permission. But Jesus had already included everybody anyhow in the family of God by drawing wider the circle of divine familyhood. He had offered himself to all as a guide and leader along the mountains, hills and molehills of life's troubles. With this book and the Bible in your hand, you can climb the hills of your life easily with Jesus Christ as your leader and guide. Enjoy it.

Out of the dawn of Man they came; the huge, hairy, monstrous ape-men of the aboriginal myth and legend. They haunted the more remote, mountainous forest recesses of the Australian continent, as well as the inhospitable open country of the vast interior... They are 'megastralian' monster-men of both myth and reality who come from a time, lost so far back in the mists of the past that their origins can at present only be guessed at. Yet they lived - for they have left evidence of their former presence, in the folklore of our aborigines, as well as in their massive stone implements scattered across the country, and in the often monstrous foot prints they left to fossilize into rock as they journeyed across the landscape of this timeless land... Excerpts from 'Giants From the Dreamtime - The Yowie in Myth and Reality' - Rex Gilroy.
