Grandma's Antique Recipes came about after I was left an absolute gem of a book handwritten by Grandma Sarah, that was essentially a collection of recipes, hints and remedies that she used in her everyday life. To me, it gives a real insight into the lives of women of Grandma Sarah's era, and to try and give some context of this bygone age, I wanted to set this amongst some social history surrounding her adopted town of Bolton. Having admired (and often used) this old, well-thumbed book for many years, my urge to get this out to people beyond my close family and friends has never really gone away. I have tried to make this nostalgic little book an interesting read and I hope you enjoy the contents of the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it. Patricia Matthews

Regain the wisdom and creativity of our ancestors who were experts at whipping up something special with tight budgets and limited supplies. You may not be able to find the “10-cent bag of marshmallows” anymore, but modern cooks can still benefit from this collection of 1920s vintage recipes collected by my late Grandmother. In 2012 I discovered her handwritten recipe notebook from 1926 and developed this cookbook. While updating the directions for modern cooks, I maintained the vintage charm of her original notes. Generations ago people did not have a bunch of fancy ingredients, but they still came up with a variety of yummy quick breads, cakes, desserts, pies, salads, main dishes, canning recipes, and fruitcakes. This cookbook has a special emphasis on fruitcakes. I share my mood-altering experiences with her fruitcake recipes. Bakers who love the holidays should definitely add a classic Christmas fruitcake to their list. All jokes aside, fruitcake deserves a place among elite holiday desserts. And people into urban farming and homesteading can harvest delicious value from these vintage recipes meant to use up all the dried fruit and nuts you can pick. Plus find a variety of classic uses for all the tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples you can grow with marvelous canning recipes for sauces, pickles, and chutneys. My Grandma’s name was Edna Oldershaw Irwin and her recipes reflect the character of the food in 1920s Canada where she grew up in Chatham, Ontario. After months of effort, I’ve prepared 64 of her recipes for publication. I no longer have my Grandma, but I still have her cookbook and now you can read it too. Enjoy trying out these vintages recipes in a cookbook inspired by Canadian heritage. Most of them are very simple and surprisingly tasty.

Spices in Your Daily Diet Grandma – Cook and Medicine Woman Garam Masala Recipe Massaman Masala Grandma’s Herbal Tips Controlling High Blood Pressure Why Grandma Did Not Fuss Curing Cuts, Bruises And Wounds Depression Nervous problems/Irritability Obesity Cure Curry leaves Lemon Juice Regime Losing weight Through Exercise? How Boring! Conclusion Author Bio Introduction In this fourth volume of grandma’s ancient natural remedies and herbal recipes, you are going to get a collection of recipes, in which grandmother used fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices to cure her family and also the neighbors around her. These remedies were given to her down the ages from our grandmother, and so on. Many of these remedies have been lost in the mists of time, but there were still some people in ancient times who wrote these remedies down in books. In 800 BC, Homer praised the knowledge of ancient Egyptians, who were extremely skilled in noninvasive surgery, and treatment of ailments. Ancient well-known Greek and Roman medicine men like Galen and Hippocrates gained plenty of their knowledge studying in the University of Amenhotep and the great and glorious physician Lucanus – known in Biblical history as Saint Luke – studied under Greek and Egyptian physicians. There were plenty of physicians who believe in spells, and considered that disease was caused by evil demons. Tibetan and other Eastern medicine still uses incantations to get rid of demons which have possessed a human or an animal body, thus causing it to get sick. In Indian and Chinese medicine, the ancient doctors had a good knowledge of the human anatomy. More than 4000 years ago, doctors in India were practicing plastic surgery, by making up noses from flaps of skin taken from other parts of the body. In the same manner, Chinese doctors knew all about blood circulation and acupuncture. In fact, Chinese medicine can be considered to be one of the most ancient, scientific and knowledgeable science ever known to mankind in today’s world. It was well documented, as was Egyptian medicine, of which many ancient priceless papyri have been found. Many of these ancient doctors knew about cause and effect, even though the belief of disease causing demons possessing a body still lingers on in many parts of the East. People are also under the impression that diseases are under the control and power of gods and goddesses who have to be placated so that they do not send an epidemic in the coming rainy season. Egypt, China, Greece, Mesopotamia, and India were fertile lands. That is why there was absolutely no reason why the people living here could not have plenty of healthy food to eat. Grains, fruit, vegetables, cereals, spices, nuts, and other natural health giving food were in abundance. This is why the ancients lived so long. Because of this healthy natural diet, and most of the people living outdoors, ailments and illnesses were few. That is why people of the 21st century are coming back to nature and looking for natural remedies based on fruit and vegetables, which are going to cure them of diseases and ailments. Chemical-based drugs may heal you very well on a short-term basis, but they are going to have an everlasting long-term effect on your body. That is because they are made up of chemicals, which do not suit the bio-physiological functioning system of your body. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables as well as herbs are going to heal your body naturally, while making sure that you do not suffer from any sort of side effects. This is the reason why grandma ‘s collected herbal lore and knowledge is all about the wonderful medical and beauty enhancing benefits of different herbs, spices, fruit, vegetables and flowers.

She knew that herbs and other plant products, were amazingly efficient, and effective in getting rid of minor ailments, which would be the lot and portion of her large family. That is why she used all those nostrums, infusions, decoctions, and other herbal products which had been passed on to her by her grandma and so on down the ages. So here is another collection of grandma’s natural remedies and ancient herbal recipes to keep you healthy, as well as beautiful. All these products are easily available right in your garden or in your kitchen. Best of all, they have no aftereffects and they have no side effects. That is because all these products are completely hundred percent natural. Why are so many people going back to natural remedies and ancient herbal recipes, in the 21st century? That is because they have found that chemical-based drugs and medicines have a short-term effect. They may also come accompanied with toxic effects, and side effects. So you are going to find yourself suffering from these long-term aftereffects. However, that is definitely not the case when you are taking natural remedies, which have been made with hundred percent natural products. And that is what grandma did. She gathered all the natural products available in her garden, or easily available in the woods, when she went rambling out gathering herbs, and brought them home. These were then used, to cure a number of ailments. Some of them seem rather drastic, but you need to remember that grandma was more of an experimenter. She knew that there was one product in these herbal combinations which did all the magic. The rest were just “filling.”

Grandma's Little Cookbook consists of old fashioned recipes, which have been mostly passed down by word of mouth, spanning a period of nearly two hundred years and which represent the best cuisine of the time. Good food depends as much on the judgment of the cook as on the materials used. These recipes and household tips are written very clearly, for those who have had no experience, no practice, and perhaps little judgment. They are straightforward, inexpensive, and, if followed closely, will ensure success. Nonna Rosa hopes that the inexperienced housekeeper will find real help in it.

One of the neighborhood grandmothers used to tell my mother: “If Bobby wants to eat chocolate cake for breakfast...let him eat the cake...it has all the things that are good for him...eggs, flour, butter, milk, and chocolate!” Not exactly the advice of today, however the ladies of the Kingston Presbyterian Church must have agreed because over half of the 425 recipes in this cookbook are for desserts. Loaded with historic recipes, this cookbook is guaranteed to return you once again to your grandma's kitchen. To be sure that you get the same results that grandma did you will need to use period ingredients: real butter, cream, and so on, when using these recipes. Otherwise, they will not taste the same and some may not work at all. Old recipes were designed for use with unbleached flour and often will not work with bleached flour because of additives and bleaching agents that cause the flour to act differently. The recipes also may not work properly when you substitute modern ingredients for the use of lard in cooking. Old recipes also used different units of measurement than we do today. Standardized measurements did not appear until 1896. Where teaspoons or tablespoons are mentioned they are the spoons people ate or served with, a cup meant a teacup and a glass or tumbler was a small water glass. Readers are forewarned of other challenges to preparing these recipes. For instance, often the recipes are simply a list of ingredients without instructions. Cooking times and temperatures are a more modern invention and a recipe like the one for Beaf Loaf tells us to “Bake an hour and a quarter” but is silent as to the oven temperature. On the other hand, the recipe for Oyster Pie says to “bake in a quick oven” without mention to how long to bake the pie. Or, for that matter what a “quick oven” means. Other instructions like “cook until done” or “milk to make a batter” may also challenge readers aspiring to cook like their grandmother and/or great grandmother. Quite a challenge, but I am sure your grandmother will be there with you helping you recreate history!
