Thailand s Secret War

This book is an absorbing account of secret operations and political intrigue in wartime Thailand. During World War II Free Thai organisations co-operated with Allied intelligence agencies in an effort to rescue their nation from the consequences of its 1941 alliance with Japan. They largely succeeded despite internal differences and the conflicting interests and policies of their would-be-allies, China, Great Britain and the United States. London's determination to punish Thailand placed the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) at a serious disadvantage in its rivalry with the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The US State Department, in contrast, strongly supported OSS operations in Thailand, viewing them as a vehicle for promoting American political and economic influence in mainland Southeast Asia. Declassification of the records of the OSS and the SOE permits full revelation of this complex story of heroic action and political intrigue.

Excerpt: Kiatisuk "Zico" Senamuang (Thai: , born August 11, 1973, in Udon Thani) is a Thai football manager and a former footballer who played between 1989 and October 2007. He was played as a striker and scored 251 goals from 339 appearances throughout his 18 years career. The former legendary striker was played for clubs in Malaysia, Singapore, England and Vietnam as well as his homeland's clubs. "Zico" also earned 130 caps and scored 69 goals for the country between 1992 and 2007. He is currently managing Bangkok F.C. in Thai Division 1 League. He played with Perlis FA in Malaysia before joining an English club Huddersfield Town in 1999 which somewhat believed to be a publicity stunt by then manager Steve Bruce. After one season, in which he did not feature in the Huddersfield Town first team squad, he left English football for Rajpracha Sports Club in Thailand, later joining Singapore Armed Forces FC where he scored 15 goals in 20 games. In March 2002, he moved once again to become a star in Vietnam with Hoang Anh Gia Lai, where he helped win the V-League title several times. Kiatisuk was awarded a medal for his contributions to Vietnamese football. He returned to play for the Thailand national football team in the King's Cup. He's now retired and is managing Hoang Anh Gia Lai. Kiatisuk played 130 international matches and scored 65 goals for the national team. Both numbers are Thai national records. But in fact, there is confusion about the caps and goals of Kiatisuk due to some real caps and goals of him was not accepted by FIFA. Nonetheless, for the statistic of Thailand, Kiatisuk scored 100 goals for the national team. After retiring from playing in 2006 Kiatisuk went straight into management with V-League side Hoang Anh Gia Lai before moving back home to Thailand to take charge of Chula United. Thailand Clubs Hoang Ahn Gia Lai Piyapong Pue-on (Thai: RTGS: Piyaphong Phiu-on; born: November 14, 1959) is a retired Thai football player. He is the most well-known foot

William J Gedney s Comparative Tai Source Book

This volume provides accurate and reliable data from 1,159 common cognates found in 19 dialects from the Tai language family. Originally collected by noted Tai linguist, the late William J. Gedney, the data are organized into the three branches of the Tai language family, the Southwestern, the Central, and the Northern, to facilitate comparisons among the various sound systems within the individual branches and within the Tai language family as a whole. Supplementing the cognates are phonological descriptions of each of the dialects. Included among the nineteen dialects are Siamese, White Tai, Black Tai, Shan, Lue, Yay, Saek, and dialects found at Leiping, Lungming, Pingsiang, and Ningming in China. The meticulous attention paid to consonants, vowels, and tones found in each cognate will allow for further dialect studies, for the investigation of questions concerning the tripartite division of the Tai language family, and for the continuing investigation into the reconstruction of the Proto-Tai language family and its wider genetic relationships.
