This story poses a profound question - do we accept the hand that fate deals us, or do we battle to make the most of the life we have and help others in the process? Chris Graham, just 38 years old but already facing the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease, has emphatically chosen the latter. Having lived through a troubled childhood, Chris joined the British Army at a young age and found that the life of a soldier provided him with a much-needed sense of stability. However, his world was turned upside down when, at just 34 years of age, he was diagnosed with a form of early onset dementia. This brutal disease had already claimed the life of his father at 42, along with several other members of his family, and tragically had already confined his brother to a nursing home at the age of 43. In his brother's life, Chris could see a terrifying window into his own near future. Chris, though, is an extraordinary human being. Having been handed nothing less than a death sentence, he decided overnight to stand up to this horrendous disease and do something to leave his mark before it was too late. And so it was that last year, Chris embarked on an awareness-raising 16,000-mile solo cycle around North America, armed only with his bike, a sense of humour, and some good old-fashioned British grit. Leaving his ever-supportive wife Vicky and baby son Dexter at home, he took on huge challenges - for instance, the fear that the ability to discern left from right might leave him at any point while navigating an entire continent - and made it home in time for Christmas, determined to spending however long he has left pouring his love and attention into his family life. Five Minutes of Amazing is both the story of Chris' epic journey and of his fight against the disease increasingly being recognised as the defining disease of our generation. Inspiring and heart-rending in equal measure, it's as important as it is moving, and it will touch everyone who reads it.

Boring DJs who never shut up, and who don't even pick their own records. The same hits, over and over. A constant stream of annoying commercials. How did radio get so dull? Not by accident, contends journalist and historian Jesse Walker. For decades, government and big business have colluded to monopolize the airwaves, stamping out competition, reducing variety, and silencing dissident voices. And yet, in the face of such pressure, an alternative radio tradition has tenaciously survived. Rebels on the Air explores these overlooked chapters in American radio, revealing the legal barriers established broadcasters have erected to ensure their dominance. Using lively anecdotes drawn from firsthand interviews, Walker chronicles the story of the unsung heroes of American radio who, despite those barriers, carved out spaces for themselves in the spectrum, sometimes legally and sometimes not. Walker's engaging, meticulous account is the first comprehensive history of alternative radio in the United States. From the unlicensed amateurs who invented broadcasting to the community radio movement of the 1960s and 1970s, from the early days of FM to today's micro radio movement, Walker lays bare the hidden history of broadcasting. Above all, Rebels on the Air is the story of the pirate broadcasters who shook up radio in the 1990sand of the new sorts of radio we can expect in the next century, as the microbroadcasters crossbreed with the even newer field of Internet broadcasting.

This edition of The Amazing Illustrated Word Game Memory Books (The AIWGMB, Vol. 2, Set 1) introduces readers to the first seven of 21 five-letter-stems that are an essential part of Mentafile, on-the-way, word-game strategy as described in Volume 1, Sets 1 and 2 of The AIWGMB. Amusing, emotionally charged, coded short-stories, illustrations and flash cards of the five-letter-stems that complement the Central Seven and Auxiliary Seven six-letter-stems of Volume 1, act to greatly expand one's photographic-memory and flash-card recall of key seven and eight-letter game-words, i.e., those especially useful in SCRABBLE(r), JUMBLE(r), WORD TOWER, etc. Readers are also invited to play A Game Within the Game where they test their ability to quickly create short stories and sketches from computer-generated, accurately defined, word lists. One never knows where the words will lead, and the five-letter-stems, with their frequently long lists of esoteric, little-used words, can take one's mind to some exceedingly bizarre, surprisingly memorable places. For example, when one adds a second A and another letter to the five-letter-stem REAST, official game-word programs will assign the following interesting list of seven-letter words: ABATERS (reducers of intense occurrences), ABREAST (side by side), CARATES (tropical skin disease), GASTREA (primitive microbe), TEARGAS (tearing gas), KARATES (martial arts), AEROSAT (air-control satellite), ERRATAS (typing errors). To play A Game Within the Game, one uses all of the defined seven-letter words and the game's universal iconic code for the letter "A" (men's ties, ties into something, or ties someone up). When the reader has made their story emotionally charged, used as few extraneous words as possible, and made a rough sketch to illustrate their story, they compare results with the author's for a surprising, fun way to reinforce one's photographic recall. READ ALL ABOUT IT: Hikers to Walk From East Coast to Vancouver Canadians have long been fascinated with trekkers who conquered this country sea to sea, from John Hugh Gillis in 1906 to Terry Fox in 1980 to Rick Hansen in 1985. This adventure tale celebrates five Canadians who hiked from Halifax to Vancouver in 1921. For a nation struggling with post-war inflation, labour unrest and unemployment, the prospect of the 3,645-mile hike was a welcome distraction. Daily reports from the competitors, who followed the CPR tracks, ran in the Halifax Herald and in other newspapers, and it wasn't long before the race had become a national obsession to rival today's Amazing Race television series or the Tour de France. Bands played. Crowds cheered. People placed their bets. By the time they were done, all five competitors had turned Canada "walking crazy". This story about men and women with modern-day derring-do is told in the vernacular of the day, with newspaper accounts and over 50 photographs.
