What Do You Know about Simon Pecer? He was brash. Impulsive. Impatient. Quick to speak and quick to act. But there's a lot to admire -- and a lot of ourselves -- in this humble fisherman Jesus transformed into a courageous, effective leader. Despite his flaws, Peter had a deep love for Christ, and his faith shines from the pages of Scripture like gold refined by fire.

As the minister of St George's Anglican Church, Baghdad, Andrew White encounters daily tragedy, yet he remains a man of profound faith. Under constant threat of death, shadowed by bodyguards, he builds and encourages and loves and consoles his beleaguered congregation. In this candid book he squarely answers the questions that his circumstances force into the open. What happened to his faith, for example, when a young girl in his congregation died, after much hope and prayer? He is trusted by all sides in this tormented region, and has met the best and worst: articulate, agreeable imams and rabbis; Christian venality and dishonesty. What has kept him willing to see the best?

“Running away from God doesn’t work. I had tried.” —Roger Benimoff As he left for his second tour of duty as an Army chaplain in Iraq, Roger Benimoff noted in his journal: I am excited and I am scared. I am on fire for God...He is my hope, strength, and focus. But not long after returning to Iraq, the burdens of his job–the memorial services for soldiers killed in action, the therapy sessions after contact with the enemy, the perilous excursions “outside the wire” while under enemy fire–began to overwhelm him. Amid the dust, heat, and blood of Iraq, Benimoff felt the pillar of strength he’d always relied on to hold him up–his faith in God–begin to crumble. Unable to make sense of the senseless, Benimoff turned to his journal. What did it mean to believe in a God who would allow the utter horror and injustice of war? Did He want these brave young men and women to die? In his darkest moment, Benimoff wrote: Why am I so angry? I do not want anything to do with God. I am sick of religion. It is a crutch for the weak. Benimoff’s spiritual crisis heightened upon his return home to Fort Carson, Colorado. He withdrew emotionally from wife and sons, creating tensions that threatened to shatter the family. He was assigned to work at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he counseled returning soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder–until he was diagnosed himself with PTSD. Finding himself in the role of patient rather than caregiver, connecting as an equal with his fellow sufferers, and revisiting scriptural readings that once again rang with meaning and truth, he began his most decisive battle: for the love of his family and for the chance to once again open his heart to the healing grace of God. Intimate and powerful, drawing on Benimoff’s and his wife’s journals, Faith Under Fire chronicles a spiritual struggle through war, loss, and the hard process of learning to believe again. From the Hardcover edition.

Clear evidence of God's work in Burundi In 1999 Simon Guillebaud went to Burundi, one of the most dangerous countries on earth, where he pulled together an evangelistic team to reach the youths of the streets. Several colleagues died--but God honored their efforts. Hundreds found faith and miracles became almost a daily occurrence. Although Simon had not expected to survive, God had other plans. A lady called Lizzie was willing to share Simon's difficult life, and they now have three children. To empower local people, Simon determined to construct the best conference center in Burundi. Astonishingly the center was built without incurring debt or paying bribes. It is now open, in full use, and already profitable. Simon comments: "The book combines prayer letters, diary entries, and reflections from ten years in a war zone, from very humble beginnings to a massively fruitful ministry. It covers witchcraft, miracles, evangelism, Islam, orphans, street kids, AIDS, business for mission, and stories of triumphant faith in the midst of hideous suffering. It includes dark times and disillusionments. It's real, vulnerable, and raw."

As World War II raged, millions of men and women confronted injury, destruction, separation from home and loved ones, chaos, and death. These challenges and traumas and many others forced an entire generation of everyday heroes to take stock of their lives. And in the process, many turned to God in ways they never had before. In Faith Under Fire, you'll experience scenes of astonishing bravery, moments of heart-breaking loss, and a pervasive sense of love for God, neighbor, and country that was strong enough to transcend denominational and national differences, inspiring selfless acts of courage and compassion under the worst of circumstances. From the Catholic chaplain who offered mercy among the carnage of Iwo Jima, to the Pentecostal boy who was saved from an incoming shell by the voice of God calling his name, to the young wife praying that her husband would survive life in a concentration camp, to the Tuskegee Airman who fought both totalitarianism and racism, these stories reveal the power of faith that sustained these heroes when there was nowhere else to turn. Award-winning author Steve Rabey presents more than twenty firsthand accounts of faith under pressure, many of them illustrated with war-time photos, letters, and journal entries. At a time when many who lived through these trying times are dying, their stories live on, passing on a legacy of faith and fortitude to future generations.

After the Great War some texts by British Army veterans portrayed the Anglican chaplains who had served with them in an extremely negative light. This book examines the realities of Anglican chaplains' wartime experiences and presents a compelling picture of what it meant to be a clergyman-in-uniform in the most devastating war in modern history.

How does he remain cheerful despite his physical weakness, and its progression? What does he say to God, alone in his study, late at night? He has been caught up in momentous events. Can he see the hand of God? Looking ahead, can he be optimistic about the future? Where are his sources of spiritual energy? He solicits prayer: why? Why Read This Book? Unless we hide our faith as Christians, we will occasionally be somebody's target. Do we settle for: "You have your beliefs and I have mine, let's leave it at that"? Or do we take to heart the admonition of 1 Peter 3:15: "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."? Taking the latter course will undoubtedly launch us into a series of joys and fears. It will test our faith, affect friendships and maybe even put our family at risk. This story is an attempt to portray the battles of an ordinary small town man who tries to balance commitment to work, family, community and his Christian faith with some joyful fruit and some heart wrenching results. Henry Wiebe was born in Hearst, Ontario but moved with his parents to Abbotsford, B.C. at age 9. After graduating from a Christian Mennonite high school he entered the elementary school teaching profession for 24 years, 15 as a principal. He was then invited to join the staff of Sevenoaks Alliance Church in Abbotsford as Pastor for Christian Education. After 10 years on staff there Henry served in Kijabe, Kenya as a volunteer teacher at Moffat Bible College for one year while his wife, Helen, assisted in station administration. Upon returning to Canada he became the Senior Pastor of Oliver Alliance Church for nearly 7 years and has since retirement served as voluntary Pastor for Seniors in the same church.
