Many know the tragic story of Anne Frank, the teen whose life ended at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. But most people don’t know about Eva Schloss, Anne’s playmate and stepsister. Though Eva, like Anne, was taken to Auschwitz at the age of 15, her story did not end there. / This incredible memoir recounts — without bitterness or hatred —the horrors of war, the love between mother and daughter, and the strength and determination that helped a family overcome danger and tragedy.

Over the last two decades, the experiences of colonization and decolonization, once safely relegated to the margins of what occupied students of history and literature, have shifted into the latter's center of attention, in the West as elsewhere. This attention does not restrict itself to the historical dimension of colonization and decolonization, but also focuses upon their impact upon the present, for both colonizers and colonized. The nearly fifty essays here gathered examine how literature, now and in the past, keeps and has kept alive the experiences - both individual and collective - of colonization and decolonization. The contributors to this volume hail from the four corners of the earth, East and West, North and South. The authors discussed range from international luminaries past and present such as Aphra Behn, Racine, Blaise Cendrars, Salman Rushdie, Graham Greene, Derek Walcott, Guimarães Rosa, J.M. Coetzee, André Brink, and Assia Djebar, to less known but certainly not lesser authors like Gioconda Belli, René Depestre, Amadou Koné, Elisa Chimenti, Sapho, Arthur Nortje, Es'kia Mphahlele, Mark Behr, Viktor Paskov, Evelyn Wilwert, and Leïla Houari. Issues addressed include the role of travel writing in forging images of foreign lands for domestic consumption, the reception and translation of Western classics in the East, the impact of contemporary Chinese cinema upon both native and Western audiences, and the use of Western generic novel conventions in modern Egyptian literature.

"No fiction could match the excitement of this real-life tale of suspense and survival. Eva's Journey zips along, touching only lightly on the tragedy at its core. The focus instead is on the combination of luck and Eva's amazing presence of mind that allow the Jewish teen to evade capture by the Nazis for four years in occupied Poland and Russia. Eva's Journey is a glorious story of the resilient spirit triumphant over some of the worst human savagery our world has endured." -Irene McDermott, author of The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide and Reference Librarian/System Manager, San Marino Public Library. "I was very moved and often teary-eyed as I read this story of the survival of this incredible child." -Tami Cutler, Elementary School-Teacher, Duarte, California. "I read the whole story, and it was excellent. I feel that it makes a significant contribution to the literature reflecting Jewish history and experience of that period, and would be useful to schools and historical and cultural organizations. I got quite caught up in the story, and thought it had a lot of feeling." -Kay Haugaard, Professor of Creative Writing, Pasadena City College and author of No Place. Eva Rothschild was born into the upscale Berlin world of the 1920s, an artistic, Cabaret society that lived on the edge between the two World Wars. Her secure world crumbled to pieces with the arrival of Hitlers storm troopers, forcing her parents to flee with their two daughters from Germany to Montevideo, Uruguay. Energetic and alive, she yearned for freedom to express herself in her own fashion, through dance and learning, until she finally took the daunting step of moving to New York City. In her third country, with her third language, she found the life she sought, with Boris Kastel, who was also on a personal life quest. Evas story covers nearly a century. And it is by no means finished.
