Die Pharmakoepidemiologie ist im Bereich der Gesundheitswissenschaften eine der jüngsten Disziplinen. Sie verbindet die Wissenschaftsbereiche Pharmakologie, klinische Medizin, Epidemiologie und Biostatistik und ist dadurch zur wissenschaftlichen Basis der Praxis der Arzneimittelsicherheit geworden. Das vorliegende englisch-deutsche Wörterbuch enthält die wichtigsten Termini (ca. 500), Definitionen und Konzepte des epidemiologischen Themenspektrums und richtet sich an alle, die Gesundheitsforschung betreiben oder sich mit ihren Ergebnissen auseinandersetzen. Das Buch will dazu beitragen, den Gebrauch von fachspezifischen Termini im Bereich Pharmakoepidemiologie international zu standardisieren. Zur Definition von Begriffen ist jeweils die Originalliteratur herangezogen worden. This text provides an introduction to the principles and practice of epidemiology to public health professionals whose primary focus is not epidemiology. The book covers everything from the historical development of epidemiology, concepts of causality, and definitions of disease and health to measures of disease frequency and sources of community health data.

Abstract: A reference text summarizes and discusses the contribution of epidemiology to the study of health care services and the formulation of health policies. The text examines investigators methods and data gathering, analysis, and interpretation in relation to general and specific health policy issues. Attention is focused on the impact of a particular health service or procedure on changes in the population health status. The text is segmented into 6 parts. These cover 1) basic background topics (e.g.: the development and application of health indices and disease classifications; the identification of data sources for assessing community health needs; the rules of evidence used to epidemiologically assess casual relationships); 2) appropriate research design and analysis protocols for program planning and evaluation; 3) health policy issues associated with preventive measures as illustrated through case studies; 4) advanced health care technologies (coronary by-pass; tomography) and the role of the nurse practitioner; 5) health care in coronary heart disease and high blood pressure; and 6) health care for mothers, children, and the elderly.
