Every year hundreds of human skeletal remains are brought to the surface by engineering works, quarrying or planned archaeological exploration. These remains provide vital clues to unraveling man's antiquity?their position and location, relation to other remains, state of preservation and "medical" condition all provide important information on ancient man and his living environment. Inferences regarding length of life, nutritional standards, diseases and origin of injuries can all be made in bones that are thousands of years old. However, many of these features are open to interpretation and the information gained is only as good as the records and analysis made at that time. The purpose of this book is to describe the many techniques now available for the proper excavation, preparation and analysis of human skeletal remains, so that the most effective use can be made of them. As such it will prove invaluable to both amateur and professional archaeologists, students of anthropology and anatomy, and the layman who has an interest in this ancestors' modus vivendi.

From acclaimed author Aimee Gilchrist comes a brand new series set in the most unlikely of places... Helen Harding is a genius at picking losers. Her exes run the gamut from merely lazy to legitimately criminal, making all the stops in between. After her fourth, and absolutely final, fiancé is carted off to prison for making time with the underage honeys, Helen is mortified and desperate to get out of town. The perfect solution seems to be a last minute call to arms from her aunt Penny, a beer swigging chain smoker from backwoods Texas who has three-inch press-on nails, a love of men from truck stops, and a life or death problem...that, unfortunately, ends in death before Helen even has a chance to arrive. Helen believes in atonement—or maybe it's revenge. Either way, she owes it to Penny to find out who ended her life in violence. Much to the annoyance of the local volunteer sheriff, Aodhagan MacFarley—who Helen is most definitely not getting involved with no matter how hot he may look in his fitted suit and polished wingtips. With or without his help, Helen vows to tracks a trail of suspects who may have more than one foul deed to account for. As the days drag on, the nights heat up, and the danger grows closer, if Helen isn't careful, she may just end up six feet under and the latest casualty of Birdwell, Texas! What critics are saying about Aimee's books: "Great characters and witty dialogue. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the end. I look forward to reading more." —A Cozy Booknook "An awesome, fun and funny read. Highly recommended for mystery readers, cozy readers...chick-lit, humor. Highly recommended!" —Bear Mountain Books "Clever, witty, and heartfelt! I was with Helen every step of the way, and I wish I could visit Birdwell, Texas myself. You know, without the dead bodies and stuff." —Gemma Halliday, New York Times bestselling author

Professional genealogist Lonnie Briggs, the great-granddaughter of a legendary evangelist, is blessed with a quiet life on sixty acres near the tiny North Carolina town where she grew up. Lonnie is a loner who prefers the company of her dogs or digging around an old graveyard to spending time with most of the people she knows. It is against her better judgement that she allows herself to be convinced by her high school sweetheart to search for the child that his dying wife gave up for adoption at birth. Almost immediately, Lonnie uncovers secrets she would rather not have known and is led into an emotional minefield she would definitely have preferred to avoid. When the missing child, now a young woman, is murdered, Lonnieas old flame is suspected of committing the deed. Lonnieas involvement in the investigation becomes a matter of life and death, placing her directly in the murdereras path and culminating in an outcome no one believed possible.

This book covers the history of archaeology in New Zealand, and the ever-increasing knowledge about the people who have lived here. It focuses on the origin of the Maori people and their social life (as revealed by archaeology) and there is also a section on discoveries about the Europeans in New Zealand. Much of the text appeared as Unearthing New Zealand, first published in 1989. Many photographs, coloured and line drawings and maps illustrate the text. Suggestions for further reading and an index are provided. Soft covered.
