Dark pedagogy explores how different perspectives can be incorporated into a darker understanding of environmental and sustainability education. Drawing on the work of the classic horror author H.P. Lovecraft and new materialist insights of speculative realism, the authors link Lovecraft’s ‘tales of the horrible’ to the current spectres of environmental degradation, climate change, and pollution. In doing so, they draw parallels between how humans have always related to the ‘horrible’ things that are scaled beyond our understanding and how education can respond to an era of climate catastrophe in the age of the Anthropocene. A new and darker understanding of environmental and sustainability education is thus developed: using the tripartite reaction pattern of denial, insanity and death to frame the narrative, the book subsequently examines the specific challenges of potentials of developing education and pedagogy for an age of mass extinction. This unflinching book will appeal to students and scholars of dark pedagogies as well as those interested in environment and sustainability education.

This book is a genre-breaking response to the literature on study abroad. It stakes claim to an uncharted space between reflective pedagogy, public history studies, and investigations into dark tourism. Drawing on the author’s experience of teaching short-term summer programs and courses in London between 2011 and 2018 that focused wholly or in part on the Whitechapel murders of 1888, the book analyzes experiential learning in the study abroad context. The book is informed by the instructor’s reflections; students’ informal essays and anonymous evaluations; and the scholarship of teaching and learning. It begins by situating programs and courses on the Whitechapel murders in the context of debates about overseas and experiential learning. It then proceeds to discuss the constraints to and possibilities for devising study abroad programs to include graduate students in humanistic disciplines; assignments and classroom activities utilized, including those with a reenactment component; the ethical complexities of teaching at dark sites; and the pedagogical implications of learning about Jack the Ripper in an age of terror. It concludes with reflections on the differences between study abroad programs and courses in cultivating students’ global-mindedness.

This volume presents some contributions to the 6th conference of the EERA network 'Tacit Dimensions of Pedagogy': 'Education is Relation not Output? Scenes of Knowledge and Knowledge Acquisition'. The symposium was motivated by the fact that some perspectives of Humanities, for example those from the Educational and the Cultural Sciences, are not always present in the current discourses on university. This book addresses contemporary philosophical issues in higher education and how we can create socially just pedagogies and a socially just university. Providing a forum for thinking through how critical posthumanism, affect theory and feminist new materialisms provide a useful lens for higher education, and shows how these standpoints can benefit methods and practices of learning and teaching. Gross inequalities in higher education continue to affect pedagogical practices across geopolitical contexts and there is a need to consider new theories which call into question the commonplace humanist assumptions currently dominating the discourse around social justice in this context. However scholarship on the affective turn, critical posthumanism and new material feminisms, opens both new possibilities and responsibilities for higher education pedagogies. The approaches of this book also provide imaginative ways of engaging with current dissatisfactions with higher education, from the marketization of education, to issues of racism, discrimination and lack of diversity. Of international relevance, this collection particularly foreground southern contexts and case studies, such as the student activism in South African universities that has sparked a global project of decolonization and social justice in educational institutions. This book is an urgent call to reconceptualize, rethink and reconfigure pedagogies in higher education and the implications for future citizenship and social participation.

The book provides a necessary commitment for a stronger preventive attitude to parenting: in other words, parents could and should educate themselves for parenthood in order to be able to provide their children those guiding maps for personal growth. Attributing so much importance to a self formation in motherhood and fatherhood, does not reduce the family to a secondary social role in order to avoid pathological issues and intergenerational clashes, rather it wants to urge in committing for their children's growth-formation without any neurotic search for perfection and educational abstentions. Will we be able to support those adults willing to be good parents but not parents acting well? The book tries to offer theoretical views choosing to privilege the informality that the family code requires in order that those parents in "normal" situations, and not only those who have problems or difficulties, would find guiding lines to appropriately face common and general issues; this not according to the strict canons of formal education, but to an education among adults that does not enclose the family in material, and always private and individual experiences, to the detriment of spiritual and more general dimensions.

Best known for the progressive school he founded in Dessau during the 18th century, Johann Bernhard Basedow was a central thinker in the German Enlightenment. Since his death in 1790 a substantial body of German-language literature about his life, work, and school (the Philanthropin) has developed. In the first English intellectual biography of this influential figure, Robert B. Louden answers questions that continue to surround Basedow and provides a much-needed examination of Basedow's intellectual legacy. Assessing the impact of his ideas and theories on subsequent educational movements, Louden argues that Basedow is the unacknowledged father of the progressive education movement. He unravels several paradoxes surrounding the Philanthropin to help understand why it was described by Immanuel Kant as “the greatest phenomenon which has appeared in this century for the perfection of humanity”, despite its brief and stormy existence, its low enrollment and insufficient funding. Among the many neglected stories Louden tells is the enormous and unacknowledged debt that Kant owes to Basedow in his philosophy of education, history, and religion. This is a positive reassessment of Basedow and his difficult personality that leads to a reevaluation of the originality of major figures as well as a reconsideration of the significance of allegedly minor authors who have been eclipsed by the politics of historiography.
