Graham Jarvis has been at the top of off-road motorcycling for the best part of twenty-five years and has competed in hundreds of competitions and races all over the world, from TV's Junior Kickstart in the early 1990s to the fabled and ridiculously perilous Erzberg Rodeo, which Graham has won a record-equalling five times and is one of motorsport's most feared events. Having excelled at Trials and Enduro, Graham then moved into the high-octane world of Hard Enduro, one of the most exhilarating sports on two wheels. Since then, he has all but dominated the sport and has won Hard Enduro's five major events - the Erzberg Rodeo, the Red Bull Sea to Sky, the Red Bull Romaniacs, the Tough One and Hell's Gate - on no fewer than thirty occasions, making him one of motorsport's most successful athletes. In Conquering the Iron Giant, Graham will take us from his early years in Canterbury, where he started pulling wheelies from the age of four on a bike that his dad had rescued from the tip, to competing against up to 1,800 riders in races where dozens are often airlifted to hospital, and only three or four finish . . . with Graham usually at the head of the field. It is a story of dedication, skill and, above all, an extreme passion for off-road motorcycling.

In I Know You Got Soul, Jeremy Clarkson writes about the machines that he believes have 'soul'. It will come as no surprise to anyone that Jeremy Clarkson loves machines. But it's not just any old bucket of blots, cogs and bearings that rings his bell. In fact, he's scoured the length and breadth of the land, plunged into the oceans and taken to the skies in search of machines with that elusive certain something. And along the way he's discovered: * The safest place to be in the event of nuclear war * Who would win if Superman, James Bond and The Terminator had a fight * The stupidest person he's ever met * What an old Cornish institution called Arthur has to do with 0898 chat lines * And how Jean Claude Van Damme might get eaten by a lion . . . In I Know You Got Soul, Jeremy Clarkson tells stories of the geniuses, innovators and crackpots who put the ghost in the machine. From Brunel's SS Great Britain to the awesome Blackbird spy-plane and from the woeful - but inspiring - Graf Zeppelin to Han Solo's Millennium Falcon, they can't help but love them in return. Praise for Jeremy Clarkson: 'Brilliant . . . laugh-out-loud' Daily Telegraph 'Outrageously funny . . . will have you in stitches' Time Out 'Very funny . . . I cracked up laughing on the tube' Evening Standard

[A] first-rate narrative” (The Wall Street Journal) about the controversial construction of New York’s beloved original Penn Station and its tunnels, from the author of Eiffel's Tower and Urban Forests As bestselling books like Ron Chernow's Titan and David McCullough's The Great Bridge affirm, readers are fascinated with the grand personalities and schemes that populated New York at the close of the nineteenth century. Historian Jill Jonnes tells a ravishing tale of snarling plutocrats, engineering feats, and backroom politicking packed with the most colorful figures of Gilded Age New York. Conquering Gotham will be featured in an upcoming episdoe of PBS's American Experience.

This is our second (of three) collections of Space Patrol stories by "Eando Binder" (Otto O. Binder). Starting with the February, 1946 issue, every issue of Captain Marvel Adventures included a 2-page short story featuring Lt. Jon Jarl of the Space Patrol. These juvenile space operas -- designed to appeal to kids -- featured daring-do by a two-fisted young member of the Space Patrol. In a solar system where seemingly every planet and moon can support life and the asteroid belt harbors numerous space pirates and criminals, Jon Jarl always seems to save the day. If you've seen the early TV adventures of Captain Video and His Video Rangers, Space Patrol, or Tom Corbett, Space Cadet -- which were clearly influenced by Binder's writing (as well as the shared universe of "space opera" that had been developed in Amazing Stories magazine under editor Ray Palmer) -- you will know what you're in for...a ride into the Wild West of outer space, where physics and logic never get in the way of a good story! Includes 30 short stories.

Only fragments of historical text from China's middle period have been translated into English, until now. Here at last is the first major Chinese historical work from the Song dynasty. Written by Ouyang Xiu, an intellectual giant of the eleventh century, this is a history of the preceding century (907–979), a period known as the Five Dynasties. The historical and literary significance of Ouyang's achievement cannot be underestimated. In rewriting the existing official history of the Five Dynasties, Ouyang—whose own time was characterized by extraordinary intellectual and political innovation—made several notable decisions. He rewrote the history in the "ancient" style preferred by forward-thinking literati; he even rewrote the original documents quoted within biographies. He also relied on his own moral categories, reevaluating the worth of the historical figures in light of his own convictions that individuals should take personal responsibility for the fate of society. Ouyang's history would eventually become the official version—the last state-sanctioned dynastic history of imperial China to be written by an individual in a private capacity. In addition to its provocative insights and lucid presentation, Historical Records of the Five Dynasties is an eloquent statement on the art of historical writing in the eleventh century. A preeminent scholar of Chinese history, Richard L. Davis has provided a thorough introduction and rendered nearly two-thirds of the Chinese original into English, including complete sections critical to understanding the politics and personalities of the time. Biographical clusters based on Ouyang's moral categories also appear in full, helping readers to appreciate the Confucian agenda that informs the work.
