This book presents theories and techniques for perception of textures by computer. Texture is a homogeneous visual pattern that we perceive in surfaces of objects such as textiles, tree barks or stones. Texture analysis is one of the first important steps in computer vision since texture provides important cues to recognize real-world objects. A major part of the book is devoted to two-dimensional analysis of texture patterns by extracting statistical and structural features. It also deals with the shape-from-texture problem which addresses recovery of the three-dimensional surface shapes based on the geometry of projection of the surface texture to the image plane. Perception is still largely mysterious. Realizing a computer vision system that can work in the real world requires more research and ex periment. Capability of textural perception is a key component. The problem of scale pervades both the natural sciences and the vi sual arts. The earliest scientific discussions concentrate on visual per ception (much like today!) and occur in Euclid's (c. 300 B. C. ) Optics and Lucretius' (c. 100-55 B. C. ) On the Nature of the Universe. A very clear account in the spirit of modern "scale-space theory" is presented by Boscovitz (in 1758), with wide ranging applications to mathemat ics, physics and geography. Early applications occur in the cartographic problem of "generalization", the central idea being that a map in order to be useful has to be a "generalized" (coarse grained) representation of the actual terrain (Miller and Voskuil 1964). Broadening the scope asks for progressive summarizing. Very much the same problem occurs in the (realistic) artistic rendering of scenes. Artistic generalization has been analyzed in surprising detail by John Ruskin (in his Modern Painters), who even describes some of the more intricate generic "scale-space sin gularities" in detail: Where the ancients considered only the merging of blobs under blurring, Ruskin discusses the case where a blob splits off another one when the resolution is decreased, a case that has given rise to confusion even in the modern literature.

The purpose of this monograph is to present computationally efficient algorithms for solving basic problems in robot manipulator dynamics. In par ticular, the following problems of rigid-link open-chain manipulator dynam ics are considered : i) computation of inverse dynamics, ii) computation of forward dynamics, and iii) generation of linearized dynamic models. Com putationally efficient solutions of these problems are prerequisites for real time robot applications and simulations. Cartesian tensor analysis is the mathematical foundation on which the above mentioned computational algorithms are based. In particular, it is shown in this monograph that by exploiting the relationships between second order Cartesian tensors and their vector invariants, a number of new tensor vector identities can be obtained. These identities enrich the theory of Carte sian tensors and allow us to manipulate complex Cartesian tensor equations effuctively. Moreover, based on these identities the classical vector descrip tion for the Newton-Euler equations of rigid body motion are rewritten in an equivalent tensor formulation which is shown to have computational advan tages over the classical vector formulation. Thus, based on Cartesian tensor analysis, a conceptually simple, easy to implement and computationally efficient tensor methodology is presented in this monograph for studying classical rigid body dynamics. XlI Application of this tensor methodology to the dynamic analysis of rigid-link open-chain robot manipulators is simple and leads to an efficient fonnulation of the dynamic equations of motion.
