Pour Ie cinquieme congres de la serie, COMPSTAT 82 reunit environ 500 participants d'origines scientifiques et geographiques tres variees, prouvant a l'evidence l'interet persis tant de la communaute scientifique pour tous les problemes de calculs statistiques. Wishart (Royaume Uni) Ce Comite a decide d'augmenter Ie nombre des conferenciers invites, cherchant de la sorte une representation des diverses ecoles ainsi que l'introduction de nouveaux themes. La tache la plus difficile a ensuite ete de selectionner une soixantaine de contributions parmi 250 soumissions. La encore Ie Comite de Programme s'est efforce de favoriser des voies qui semblaient les plus nouvelles et a essaye de maintenir une bonne repartition scientifique et geographique. Cependant, comme dans les precedents congres COMPSTAT, il a donne la preference aux propositions clairement marquees simultanement du double aspect Statistique et Calcul. Dans bien des cas, ces deux aspects sont tres lies rendant en particulier difficile et peu pertinente toute classification fine des contributions.

Although no-one is, probably, too enthused about the idea, it is a fact that the development of most empirical sciences to a great extent depends on the development of data analysis methods and techniques, which, due to the necessity of application of computers for that purpose, actually means that it practically depends on the advancement and orientation of computer statistics. Every other year the International Association for Statistical Computing sponsors the organizition of meetings of individual s professiona77y involved in computational statistics. Since these meetings attract professionals from allover the world, they are a good sample for the estimation of trends in this area which some believe is a statistics proper while others claim it is computer science. It seems, though, that an increasing number of colleagues treat it as an independent scientific or at least technical discipline. This volume contains six invited papers, 41 contributed papers and, finally, two papers which are, formally, software descriptions, but it was agreed by the Program Committee that they should be included in a separate section entitled "Notes about new developments in statistical software", due to their special significance for current trends in computational statistics.

When dealing with the design or with the application of any technical system, which is not quite simple and trivial, one has to face to the problem to determine the allowable de viations of the system functions and the optimal vector of system parameter tolerances. The need for the solution of this problem is stimulated with various serious economic and maite nance aspects, between them the tendency to reach the minimal production cost, the maximal system operation reliability are the most frequent. Partial Least Squares (PLS) is an estimation method and an algorithm for latent variable path (LVP) models. PLS is a component technique and estimates the latent variables as weighted aggregates. The implications of this choice are considered and compared to covariance structure techniques like LISREL, COSAN and EQS. The properties of special cases of PLS (regression, factor scores, structural equations, principal components, canonical correlation, hierarchical components, correspondence analysis, three-mode path and component analysis) are examined step by step and contribute to the understanding of the general PLS technique. The proof of the convergence of the PLS algorithm is extended beyond two-block models. Some 10 computer programs and 100 applications of PLS are referenced. The book gives the statistical underpinning for the computer programs PLS 1.8, which is in use in some 100 university computer centers, and for PLS/PC. It is intended to be the background reference for the users of PLS 1.8, not as textbook or program manual.
