Look out for Elizabeth Gilbert’s new book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, on sale now! At the end of her bestselling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous bad divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government, which-after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing-gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again. Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving into this topic completely, trying with all her might to discover through historical research, interviews, and much personal reflection what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. Told with Gilbert's trademark wit, intelligence and compassion, Committed attempts to "turn on all the lights" when it comes to matrimony, frankly examining questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, divorce risks and humbling responsibilities. Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails. From the Hardcover edition.

COMMITTED is the ultimate recruiting resource for the pre-collegiate women's lacrosse player. Lacrosse, as with all sports, is a wonderful vehicle; a means to an end, not an end on its own. With that perspective, COMMITTED guides its reader through the process, speaking both to her emotional and rational needs. The recruiting cycle can challenge the simple, untainted love for the sport, change a player's motivation, and test her skills and focus, and this manual will arm her with all the tools to handle each step of the way, emotionally and rationally. There must be a healthy balance of approaching this cycle with mindfulness and focus, and with heart and spirit. COMMITTED provides the perfect equation to doing so while also ensuring the reader that they are leaving no stone unturned in the recruiting process.

Designed for use by mental health professionals and graduate students, Committed Action in Practice clearly conceptualizes committed action—an integral aspect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)—and offers a deeper investigation of the first of the six core processes of ACT. The book also provides comprehensive descriptions and insight into the conceptualization, integration, and application of committed action in therapy. Committed action is an important part of the hexaflex model for acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)—the other core processes being acceptance, defusion, self-as-context and perspective taking, values clarification, and mindfulness. In practice, committed action happens when clients act in the direction of their identified values, even in the presence of obstacles. Written by Patricia Bach, Daniel J. Moran, and Sonja Batten—three ACT-oriented experts and trainers who are highly prolific in the field of modern behavioral psychology—Committed Action in Practice is a deep, focused exploration of this core aspect of ACT. With sections on the conceptualization, application, and integration of committed action in ACT, you’ll gain an understanding of how this process fits into the hexaflex model, what blocks people from taking values-based action, and how to blend the committed action component of ACT with other evidence-based therapies. With this comprehensive guide, you’ll know just how committed action works in an ACT treatment plan and be ready to apply it in practice.

Committed is a bold, offbeat, globe-trotting memoir that shows how the most ridiculed punching bag in high school became an internationally renowned crusader for the most downtrodden individuals of all -- animals. This irresistibly entertaining book recounts the random incidents and soul-searching that inspired a reluctant party boy to devote his life to a cause, without ever abandoning his sense of mischief and fun. "Everyone has a tense moment in their career that makes them wonder, how the hell did I get into this mess?" writes Mathews. "For me, it was when I was dressed as a carrot to promote vegetarianism outside an elementary school in Des Moines, and a pack of obese pig farmers showed up and peeled off slices of bologna for kids to throw at me." As the irreverent force behind the colorful crusades carried out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), one of the most effective and enduring pressure groups in the world, Mathews has strutted naked before a fur convention in Tokyo, halted GM's use of animals in crash tests by storming the carmaker's float in the Rose Parade dressed as a rabbit, and crashed a fashion show in Milan dressed as a priest. With self-deprecating wit and candor, Mathews reveals all the edgy details of his unorthodox coming-of-age and equally outrageous career. With backdrops such as the rock scene in Hollywood and London, the inner sanctums of New York high fashion, jails in Hong Kong and Boston, and a psychiatric ward in Paris, Committed spotlights the adventures life can offer when you don't abandon your youthful ideals and imagination.

Life is supposed to be a mixture of good times and bad. However, things don't always work out that way. However, these incidents also launch Tyler on a personal odyssey through a world of odd, sometimes humorous, sometimes dangerous, characters, experiences, and events: each one offering an unexpected lesson about life and its meaning. This casebook addresses selected precedent-setting rulings of various international human rights and international criminal courts with a focus on the child victims of international crimes and human rights abuses. The cases are analysed from the children’s human rights perspective and the question is examined as to what extent the aforementioned courts are according these children justice. The scope of the book is thus limited to the consideration of these representative important cases concerning violations of (a) international human rights and humanitarian law and (b) international criminal law involving child victims and the judicial remedies accorded or denied these victims and their family members. This is not in any way to diminish the suffering and importance of the adult victims of violations of fundamental human rights and grave international crimes. Rather, the book is intended to deal with the restricted and largely neglected topic of to what extent international courts are attending to the implications of there being child victims with respect to the courts’ addressing and handling of, among other matters, the following: (a) the con?rmation of charges relating to child-speci?c international crimes (i. e. recruitment of child soldiers, forced child marriage etc.

Committed to the State Asylum

Committed to the State Asylum examines the evolution of the asylum as the response to insanity in nineteenth-century Quebec and Ontario. Focusing on the creation and development of government-funded asylums for the insane - among the largest and most important nineteenth-century institutions in both provinces - James Moran argues that asylum development was the result of complex relationships among a wide array of people, including state inspectors and administrators, asylum doctors, local magistrates, jail surgeons, religious authorities, and the relatives and neighbours of those who were considered to be insane. Unlike other studies, Committed to the State Asylum shows the important role that the community played in shaping the asylum and tackles the thorny issue of state development, explaining how state asylums developed differently in each province. Moran considers Canada's pioneering institutional efforts at dealing with the criminally insane and why those efforts lasted only a short time, shedding new light on the debate about the nature and extent of state involvement in nineteenth-century Canadian society. Committed to the State Asylum offers new insights into the ways in which both ordinary families and the state understood and responded to those they thought had crossed the boundaries of sane behaviour.

The Committed Enterprise represents Hugh Davidson's major statement on what makes a sustainable and excellent organization. It is based on over a year of intense fieldwork during which the author interviewed in person the most senior executives in 126 organizations in the US and Europe. It is much easier to describe vision and values than implement them. Vision and values management is in the dark ages compared with that of Marketing, Finance or Operations. It is often derided and all too often just doesn't work. The Committed Enterprise takes a hard approach to this 'soft' topic and describes how to build unstoppable organisations, whether businesses or charities, hospitals or orchestras, by managing vision and values scientifically yet creatively. It shows how to lay the foundations for success by understanding the conflicting needs of stakeholders and uniting them through the right vision and values. These forge uncompromising commitment, and transform organizations, teams and countries. Hugh Davidson details Seven Best Practices for making vision and values work every day, at every level, based on analysis of his interviews with leaders of 125 high calibre enterprises in USA and UK. These include: · Design and timing · Linkage to key success factors · Communicating through action · Embedding via appraisal and rewards · Branding the organization · Rigorous measurement Using a unique fast track / scenic route format, the book includes hundreds of examples, quotes and checklists from enterprises as diverse as PepsiCo, Caltech, Tesco, Mayo Clinic, BP, New York Police Department, DuPont, Save the Children, UPS, New York Philharmonic, and many others. The Committed Enterprise brings a new dimension to managing organisations. It is designed for leaders and managers of every kind of enterprise. So buy it, read it, then make it happen!

Committed is a book written for those who prefer easy reading as opposed to reading with a Thesaurus in front of them to find the meanings and context of certain words. It is a South African tale which explains the lives of very normal people living very normal lives together with the mundane and also the exciting day to day experiences of being with the Police force in and around Southern Africa. Skip, a Jack Russell belonging to Terry lives his life as no normal little dog would, and shows his undivided and devoted love to his mistress spending all day with her as she patrols and combats crime on the streets. For his size he is dynamite. He can perform as well as any trained police dog and it pays off in the end as he receives an award for bravery. Committed is about commitment: love, hate and revenge. It is a lesson of life to those who are still innocent and virginal to life's problems. It focuses on abuse on women and why it is that women in particular find it so difficult to remove themselves out of an abusive relationship. I hope that you will enjoy the simple but exciting way that the story unravels itself with a cryptic and mysterious dream that Terry frequently has.

Committed to Disillusion

Can a writer help to bring about a more just society? This question was at the heart of the movement of al-adab al-multazim, or committed literature, which claimed to dominate Arab writing in the mid-twentieth century. By the 1960s, however, leading Egyptian writers had retreated into disillusionment, producing agonized works that challenged the key assumptions of socially engaged writing. Rather than a rejection of the idea, however, these works offered reinterpretation of committed writing that helped set the stage for activist writers of the present. David DiMeo focuses on the work of three leading writers whose socially committed fiction was adapted to the disenchantment and discontent of the late twentieth century: Naguib Mahfouz, Yusuf Idris, and Sonallah Ibrahim. Despite their disappointments with the direction of Egyptian society in the decades following the 1952 revolution, they kept the spirit of committed literature alive through a deeply introspective examination of the relationship between the writer, the public, and political power. Reaching back to the roots of this literary movement, DiMeo examines the development of committed literature from its European antecedents to its peak of influence in the 1950s, and contrasts the committed works with those of disillusionment that followed. Committed to Disillusion is vital reading for scholars and students of Arabic literature and the modern history and politics of the Middle East.

A masterful updating of a classic work.St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), bishop of Geneva and founder of the Visitation Order of nuns, was renowned for his teachings on spirituality. His masterpiece in the field of spiritual literature was "The Introduction to the Devout Life." Revolutionary in its day and noted for its charm, warmth, and clarity of language, it set forth a spirituality oriented toward life in the world, an approach quite different from that of St. Francis de Sales's contemporaries, who saw spiritual perfection as possible only in religious life. While the message of "The Introduction to Devout Life" is still valid today, the fact is that its expression is quite dated. In this book, as in "Bringing 'The Imitation of Christ' Into the 21st Cemtury," Father Meninger is not offering a new translation or paraphrase of a spiritual classic. Rather, he is attempting to express the teachings of the original in a wholly contemporary idiom. Father Meninger has not hesitated to change, omit, or add to the original where necessary, the better to highlight the heart and charisma of St. Francis de Sales's teachings.
