'I was born in a sprawling house by the Yamuna River in Delhi. When I was a few minutes old, Grandmother welcomed me into the world by writing "Om", which means "I am" in Sanskrit, on my tongue with a little finger dipped in honey. When the family priest arrived to draw up my horoscope, he scribbled astrological symbols on a long scroll and set down a name for me, Indrani, or "queen of the heavens". My father ignored him completely and proclaimed my name was to be Madhur ("sweet as honey").' So begins Madhur Jaffrey's enchanting memoir of her childhood in India. Her description of growing up a in a very large, wealthy family (half a train was booked to transport the family from Delhi to the mountains for the summer) conjures up the spirit of a long lost age. Whether climbing the mango trees in her grandparents' orchard, armed with a mixture of salt, pepper, red chillies and roasted cumin, or enjoying picnics in the foothills of the Himalayas, reached by foot, rickshaw, palanquin or horse, where meatballs stuffed with sultanas and mint leaves, cauliflowers flavoured with ginger and coriander, and spiced pooris with hot green mango pickle were devoured, food forms a major leitmotiv of this beautifully written memoir. With recipes drawn from memories of dinners, lunches, breakfasts, weddings and picnics, moving effortlessly from the lamb meatballs of Moghul emperors to the tamarind chutneys of the streets, this book will appeal to keen armchair cooks, as well as fans of Madhur the world over.

Short Fiction Stories By Francisco Negron-Cadiz Some of the stories in this book are from books already published under the author’s alias of Frank Norgen. However, they appear here under different titles and have been highly edited for content and grammar. Most of the places mentioned in the stories are real, but the contents of the stories are the product of the author’s active imagination. This collection of short stories highlights the efficiency of a brief, yet thorough, narrative of regional issues and ideas about unknown worlds.

A Vintage Shorts Travel Selection Before she was a seven-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author, or a Berlinale star, Madhur Jaffrey was a little girl growing up in an India in transition. In this selection from her acclaimed autobiography, Climbing the Mango Trees, she shares her food memories from one of the most turbulent times in modern history. As Partition split her country in half, everything changed for young Madhur Jaffrey. Here she recounts what it was like to live through this time of immense upheaval, from independence from Britain to the tragic death of Mahatma Gandhi. In spite of all that was happening around her, Jaffrey’s great passion—food—remained the center of her life. Here, in mouthwatering detail, she remembers the koftas and karhi, the paneer and pooris that defined these years for her every bit as much as the dramatic events that shook the subcontinent. An eBook short.

Mango Lady & Other Stories from Hawaii takes the reader on a journey not unlike a long ride across the face of a giant wave, full of unexpected turns and surprises, weaving together memories, fantasies, and personalities that stretch from long ago Hawaii to modern day Vietnam. Through all of them is the connecting spirit of the Islands, its special mana, its people, its surf, bringing times past into the present in a special, intimate way. There is Mango Lady, who lived in Waikiki since childhood, watching her ancient preoccupations become irrelevant in the new bustle of development. There is The Man to Whom Surf Cam, the tale of a magical Urban who never failed to attract surf. There is A November Surfer, an adventure of a senior surfer at remote Rabbit Island. There is Hard Port, an intriguing pulling together of Hawaii and Russia, when a longtime surfer visits Nakhodka in the Russian Far East, the land of his ancestors. Finally, there is the flamboyant and unsettling Captain Aloha, a tale of two old surfing friends from Hawaii and the horrors of the war in Vietnam, a unique portrait of psychology and culture, of friendship and passing time."

Voices Within was first written as a speech in the hopes that one day I can be a spokes person for those suffering with a mental disorder. The book quickly took foot as I began to describe my childhood and all the emotions, anger, anxiety, turmoil that I have been facing in life and it began to come out on paper that I just could not stop writing about what was inside penned up for all those years. This is a story of love, heartache, disappointments, God, relationships and family. Everything bundled into one. A real and true life story of struggles, pain and coping with mental illness. With a recurring theme of the affects and aftermath of being verbally and emotionally abused. The book speaks out about the consequences and the impact abuse can have on one’s life. With a quest to find true love in this harsh and often cruel world.

Yet, India is also in a race against time to bring the benefits of the twenty-first century to the 800 million Indians who live on less than £1 per day, and it must do so in a way that is environmentally sustainable and politically viable on a scale never before achieved. If India succeeds, it will not only save itself, it may save us all. If it fails, we will all suffer. As goes India, so goes the world. Like CHINA, INC, published in 2006 by S&S, PLANET INDIA will capture and catalyze the growing interest in this rising power. With in-depth research, interviews and provocative analysis, Mira Kamdar offers a penetrating view of India and its cultural and economic impact on the world. From Bollywood to the Indian diaspora to India's effect on global politics she reports on the people, companies and places shaping the new India. Kamdar examines the challenges India faces while celebrating India's tremendous vitality and the opportunities this Asian democracy has to shape its own and all of our destinies.

On the night of November 14, 1997, 14-year-old Reena Virk was swarmed, beaten and killed by a group of teenagers. In the aftermath of Reena's murder, it was her mother who spoke for the family. Now, for the first time, her father tells his story, speaking from the heart about his life with Reena; the spiraling events that led to yet more angst and frustration for the family; his lingering concerns about a badly fractured social-support and legal system; and the faith that pulled him through the most trying times of his life. He wrote this book to "set the record straight" and provide some hope to families going through difficult times raising their children.
