Although the environmental crisis has been recognized as an international threat, Christian attempts to reconcile their religious traditions and the earth are just beginning. 'Christian Faith and the Environment' challenges churches to take a stand for environmental concerns. Hill explores how twentieth-century theologians such as Karl Rahner, Bernard Lonergan, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin have taught Christians to build bridges between Christianity and creation. Examining sacramental rites, church documents, and feminist theological insights on ecology, Hill outlines a Christian environmental spirituality and traces the ethical challenges posed by our new awareness of our environment.

Christianity has often been accused for being complicit in ecological destruction. In response, Christian ecotheology offers both a Christian critique of environmental destruction and an ecological critique of Christianity. It thus encourages an ecological reformation of the Christian tradition for the sake of the whole earth. This volume focuses such a dual critique on the content and significance of the Christian faith in order to confront those aspects that may undermine an environmental praxis, ethos and spirituality. Each of the essays explores one of the core Christian symbols, seeks to capture the current state of the debate in this regard, identifies emerging horizons for such an ecological reformation and invites conversation on the road ahead. This volume includes essays on the trinity, Christology, pneumatology, creation, anthropology, natural suffering, providence, sin and salvation, the nature, governance, ministries and missions of the church, eschatological consummation, a Christian ethos, the role of liturgy, religious plurality andunderlying methodological problems. It thus complements several other discourses in ecotheology on biblical hermeneutics, a retrieval of particular traditions, environmental ethics, animal studies, ecclesial praxis, Christian missions and religion and ecology. The volume captures insights emerging from a collaborative research project on 'Christian Faith and the Earth' in which more than one hundred leading ecotheologians from six continents participated since 2007. It builds on the culminating conference of this project held in Cape Town in August 2012.It extends the conversation on the road ahead through inputs from contributing authors and various respondents.

Thomas Olgetree's Christian Faith and History offers a critical analysis of the views of Ernst Troeltsch and Karl Barth regarding Christian faith and history. Troeltsch and Barth appraoched theology from seemingly antithetical vantage points, but Ogletree seeks to identify overlapping interests in the writing of these two authors, and to suggest a broader framework for understanding that constructively combines the insights of both.

Christian activists are working with others to "save the planet," and many may consider theological reflection on such an earth-keeping praxis as relating "creation" with "salvation." However, to do justice to both themes is not easy. This book explores the ways in which selected classic Christian theologies have grappled with this problem. The collection includes essays on: Irenaeus * Athanasius * Gregory of Nazianz * Augustine * Maximus the Confessor * Medieval female mystics * the Franciscan tradition * Thomas Aquinas * Martin Luther * John Calvin. (Series: Studies in Religion and the Environment/Studien zur Religion und Umwelt - Vol. 5)
