For 34 years from 1973 Peter Baxter was BBC producer of the hugely popular Test Match Special, and during that time he reported on Test matches from around the world. This funny and revealing book takes us behind the scenes as Baxter and his much-loved TMS colleagues do battle with local conditions and sometimes bizarre red tape to bring back home the latest news of England's progress (or otherwise) on the field. It should have been straightforward, but somehow it rarely was...

"Can Anybody Hear Me?" is a book of both p poetry and is one of those iconic books that shares one thing in common with any person who travels through life searching for its meaning, its purpose, and its values: the language of life resonates deeply within you. As the editor has commented, "In this collection of what can only be described as a mix of words, thoughts, and emotions, [the author] takes the reader for a quirky ride through love, struggles, ghosts, and little moments, as only she can do." Like the rhythm of a song you cannot forget, the reader is destined to replay some part of Jamieson's world long after the book is closed.

John T. Cullen (author/novelist at age 19 of the far future SF novel SUMMER PLANETS ISBN 978-0743322508) began writing poetry as a child. He's been a published poet since age 18 or 19, now mostly working as a novelist and essayist. The selection in Calling Earth... Can Anyone Hear Me? covers most of his poetry written ages 13-19, with a few as late as 22. They are a varied, turbulent blend of sensations, broken heart, lost loves (and some very sunny, steamy affairs gone good), in addition to political, religious, and philosophical ponderings. Circumstances caused him to spend a great amount of time (daily) hitchhiking on New England highways before he owned a car, especially while attending the University of Connecticut at the remote Storrs campus. His highway hitching culminated in a 4,000+ mile Kerouac-like thumbing odyssey from New England to Oregon and then down to the Mexican border at San Diego, with $40 in his pocket, a home-made backpack, and a plastic bag for cover at night. He slept in a ditch in Pennsylvania, the prairies of Kansas, forests of Oregon, and beaches of California. From an early age he became an artist with words, loving various influences from music, literature, and art. Among his many favorite poets to name just a quick few, in no particular order, spanning millennia: Pablo Neruda, Catullus, Rainer Maria Rilke, the Psalmist, Sappho, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Edgar Allan Poe, and... the line stretches around the block. In music, his influences range from Mozart to Junior Walker to John Coltrane to Bob Dylan to Steve Miller (and many more). In art, he has many favorites again and to name just a few: Rembrandt, for his use of darkness to emphasize light and personality in his subjects; Botticelli, for Simonetta Vespucci and Primavera and Venus; the ancient Pompeiian wall artist for his original Primavera; and many more. John T. Cullen always carries a pen and scraps of paper while smoking and drinking coffee in student dives, capturing the moment's passions and their interior explosive reflections. His free-form, jazzy lyrics illuminate life like puddles on a rainy day: reflected neon as we hustle by the bus stop, usually with a pretty girl's image and questioning eyes looking sultry in the dusky atmosphere. He has been a professional writer since age 17 (summer interne newspaper reporter on a New England metro daily) and a novelist since age 19 (SUMMER PLANETS, SF Novel). In his 20s, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably for five years in Germany, still writing poetry, short stories, and novels when not on duty or driving all over Europe in his old orange VW van. In addition to his UConn BA in English, he earned a Master's in Business Administration from Boston University while serving near Heidelberg, Germany. Returning to The World, he worked as a technical writer in a rocket factory filled with groaning ghosts and angry demons. He is now retired and finally publishing long-ago works filled with youthful wonder, many for the first time in the light of day but fresh as ever.

'With poignancy, humour and compassion, Jones invites us into "the invigorating chaos of pre-hospital care" . . . a panorama of experiences: the mundane, the ridiculous, the heartbreaking and the tragic' - The Guardian 'This beautifully written book, punctuated with wry humour, is a sobering portrayal of the ailing, the distressed and the lonely... Yet it's also an uplifting read which will make you thankful that should your hour of need arrive, so will someone like Jones' - Daily Express A memoir of the chaos, intensity and occasional beauty of life as a paramedic. A young man has stopped breathing in a supermarket toilet. A pedestrian with a nasty head injury won't let the crew near him on a busy road. A newborn baby is worryingly silent. An addict urinates on the ambulance floor when denied a fix. This is the life of an NHS ambulance paramedic. Jake Jones has worked in the UK ambulance service for ten years: every day, he sees a dozen of the scenes we hope to see only once in a lifetime. Can You Hear Me? - the first thing he says when he arrives on the scene - is a memoir of the chaos, intensity and occasional beauty of life on the front-lines of medicine in the UK. As well as a look into dozens of extraordinary scenes - the hoarder who won't move his collection to let his ailing father leave the house, the blood-soaked man who tries to escape from the ambulance, the life saved by a lucky crew who had been called to see someone else entirely - Can You Hear Me? is an honest examination of the strains and challenges of one of the most demanding and important jobs anyone can do. When God created the world and all that is in it, he brought the concept of time into eternity. But with the entrance of sin and death during the fall of mankind, another form of time entered as well. This type of time is not attached to eternity, but it is a counterfeit production of Satan in his attempt to be God, and he's offering the temporal-a deceiving place with no time. God's eternal life promises joy, peace, and life everlasting. However, Satan's temporal time is a place where there is never enough time in the day-no time to reflect, meditate, or pray. Only by forcing ourselves away from this time-trap can we hope to see and hear God. Author John Stamos Parrish examines time as it relates to commonly pondered topics, such as: Time and time travel Nature of light Structure of the universe Evolution versus creation Visions End times The purposeful collection Far From the Shores of Galilee provides the opportunity to pull back from time. Each story is like a rest stop along life's journey-a place to pause, reflect, and pray-a place where you can disconnect from the world and reconnect with God.

This is the first thing weve done right with this kid, argued Dr. Epstein, after I challenged his decision to alter my sons course of treatment. Just listening to this world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon admit to all the negligent care that hurt James and trapped us in the hospital for months terrified me. As Dr. Epstein rambled on about finally being on the right track with Jamess care, I wondered if Id ever get my son out of this hospital alive. This unimaginable nightmare all began in August 1982 when my youngest son, James, was admitted to New York Cornell Hospital in Manhattan, New York. He was diagnosed and treated with radiation for a brainstem glioma (tumor). The doctors told us that James would probably die in less than a year. In 1985 James was admitted to NYU Medical Center in Manhattan, New York, for what the doctors said was a recurrence of his brain disease. James was expected to undergo one surgery to remove the tumor and return home in seven to ten days. As a result of repeated mistakes by doctors, nurses, and physical therapists, James was forced to undergo eight surgeries, including one surgery that was performed without our knowledge or consent. Nine months later, my son was discharged from NYU Medical Center, permanently injured and totally disabled. Sixteen years later we discovered that James never had a brainstem tumor. Living Scared begins as a heart-wrenching memoir but quickly develops into a hard-hitting expos that probes indifference, complacent attitudes, reckless behavior, incompetence, eroding ethics, descending standards of practice, and widespread corruption in medicine. Medical Negligence Is A National Crisis Screaming newspaper headlinesdoctor operates on the wrong leg! or surgical instrument left inside patient!have become a commonplace occurrence as medical negligence spreads pervasively throughout our nation. What once was so shocking to people now hardly raises an eyebrow because allowed behavior has become accepted behavior. Sadly, we have no one to blame for this atrocity but ourselves because our society has come to accept the avoidable mistakes that occur in all hospitals as human error, and thats wrong. An estimated 100,000 people die from hospital infections every year. Another 100,000 people die from medical negligence. Some 1.5 million people a year are injured as a result of medication mistakes. Hospitals rarely blame doctors or nurses for the medical mistakes that occur in hospitals. More often than not, hospital administrators invariably blame the system each time a patient is injured or killed as a result of a medical mistake. Disciplinary action against the doctor or nurse involved is rarely executed. An example of this: Chief Executive Sam Odle of Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis said, Whenever something like this happens [regarding a medication mix-up that killed three infants on September 23, 2006], it is not an individual responsibility; its an institutional responsibility. The truth is, human negligence is often responsible for a majority of the mistakes that occur in hospitals; but hospital administrators will never admit to this fact. Instead, they shrewdly manipulate the public and minimize public outrage by blaming the system each time a patient dies as a result of medical negligence. This strategy works very well because the system is intangible, and people dont seem to get as fired up when the system fails, as opposed to a living, breathing human who failed to do their job and was responsible for the death of a patient. This nationwide crisis, approaching epidemic proportions, has prompted the U.S. government to issue a warning to all hospitals to clean up their act after a national survey showed that 47 percent of Americans were directly affected, or knew of someone af

Sandra O'Toole is the president of the Outer Alliance, which stretches from the asteroid belt to the Oort Cloud beyond Pluto. Resurrected following the death of Justin Cord, the unincorporated man, O'Toole has become a powerful political figure and a Machiavellian leader determined to win the Civil War against the inner planets at almost any cost. And the war has been going badly, in part because of the great General Trang, a fit opponent for the brilliant J. D. Black. Choices have to be made to abandon some of the moral principles upon which the revolution was founded. It is a time of great heroism and great betrayal, madness, sacrifice, and shocking military conflict. Nothing is predictable, even the behavior of artificial intelligences. There may be only one way out, but it is not surrender. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Please understand that I don't advocate drugs or glorify violent acts. As I suffer the hardships customarily associated with mental illness and long-term drug involvement the pain is only magnified by the knowledge that I am solely responsible for what I have done to myself. It truly has been debilitating to know that my own arrogance and fear have been the cause of my pain. My life has been a mulling morass of dangled hopes and shattered expectations as I've tried to pull myself up to better stations. Nevertheless, I continue to try. I must, for if I quit all the things that make up my core beliefs and propaganda of failed relationships become true. All I ask of the reader is not to view these negative events as irrefutable proof that things will always turn out this way. The early exposure to sexual situations is doubtless a factor in a long history of deviant behaviors. A household of capital punishment is undoubtedly why I have a difficult time confronting abusive and manipulative women. I've made serious mistakes, and I'm remorseful for all the damage I've done: the homes I've broken and destroyed; the people I've caused to relapse: the lives I've devastated with long term drug involvement. Even after all that pain, I still didn't get it right. I landed in a remote corner of Arizona in the boarder town of Yuma, where things have gotten much worse for me. I've found myself involved in issue upon issue. Once I lost my foundation, the crack in my mental landscape became a rift. I slipped into a dark place wondering would I ever resurface. I started traveling into Mexico, going further and further becoming an accessory to things that will go unmentioned, until I crashed hard into a self-designed and inevitable purgatory. That reckless behavior got me a severed Achilles tendon and almost a one-way ticket to meet the devil face to face. People believe a number of stories about how certain people ended up dead. If I was a thief, I too would be a corpse. My punishment was severe. All I can say is sex traffic looks different than you would ever believe.
