Fully illustrated—in color for the first time!—with drawings of nearly 350 mind-boggling trick shots, Byrne’s Treasury of Trick Shots in Pool and Billiards will teach you everything from the basic “butterfly formation” to the most difficult and impressive shots. Robert Byrne will help novice and experienced players alike perfect their trick shots and learn about the historical context of each trick. Trick shots are anything amusing, surprising, or educational that can be done on a pool or billiard table with standard accessories, and have been around as long as the game itself. Byrne demonstrates historical shots, including some invented by the famous Captain Mingaud, the world’s first professional exhibition player, and newer tricks seen while travelling to tournaments around the world. Filled with easy as well as hard, and technical as well as showy tricks, the book’s clear diagrams, paired with secret insider tips, describe simpler stunts for the beginner, those that take years of practice, and some that the author doubts you’ll ever be able to do. Whether you want to impress a crowd, a group of friends, or yourself, Byrne’s wild, stunning, and unforgettable trick shots will make you question some principles of physics and wow an audience of one or one-hundred. Antonio de Ulloa (1716–95) was a Spanish scientist and mathematician. In 1734 he was asked by Philip V of Spain to join the French geodesic expedition to measure the circumference of the Earth at the equator, and accordingly in 1735 Ulloa and his fellow scientist Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713–73) travelled to South America, staying until 1744. These volumes contain the English translation of Ulloa's account of South America, first published in 1758. The work was very popular, producing five subsequent editions: this reissue is of the fourth edition of 1806. It provides insights into the social, religious and economic institutions of colonial South America. Volume 2 contains descriptions of the cities and provinces of Lima, Concepcin (in Chile) and Buenos Aires and of the British colony of Boston, visited on the return journey, together with the first ethnological description in English of the indigenous peoples of Brazil.

The origins of billiards, pool, snooker, and other cue sports date back centuries, and The Complete Book of Billiards is the essential reference guide to these and all associated cue games. The book is both informative and entertaining as it defines the whole of billiard terminology within a historical context. In accessible A-to-Z format, with hundreds of archival illustrations and prints, most of the entries are brief encyclopedia-type paragraphs containing anecdotes, quotes, and analysis of the term. Thoroughly cross-referenced, with an extensive bibliography as well as several appendices, this is a particularly comprehensive guide. Here is such information as: ¸ À la Royale -- an obsolete game of English billiards that allowed three players to participate ¸ Bar Pool -- pocket billiards usually played on coin-operated tables ¸ Dress -- to prepare the tip of a cue stick ¸ Pool Shark -- an expert but unsavory player ¸ Skyrocket Shot -- the cue ball takes a curved path A terrific source for the serious player as well as a fascinating look back for the lover of history, The Complete Book of Billiards is an authoritative guide to cue games.
