In the early days of the First World War two volunteer Pals Battalions were raised in Bradford and this is their remarkable story. David Raw's account is based on memoirs, letters, diaries, contemporary newspaper reports, official records and archives, and it is illustrated with many maps and previously unpublished photographs. He recaptures the heroism and stoical humour displayed by the Bradford Pals in the face of often terrible experiences, but he also recounts the tragedy, pain, suffering and grief that was the dark side of war.

In 1976 one of the 'Pals Battalions' veterans said to me: "No one could write a book about the First World War unless he had been in it, because he could not possible imagine what it was like" So, I did not try to write a book about the First World War. I merely recorded the things that those old soldiers told me and what they wrote in their reports and in their letters to loved ones. This is their story, not mine.

In 1914 the City of Bradford was the world's leading manufacturer of fine woollen goods. Onthe outbreak of war, at the urging of the city's wealthy industrialists, thousands of young menrushed to join the colours and within a matter of months two volunteer Pals Battalions wereformed. Author John Broadhead, the son of a Bradford Pal, tells the story of the battalionsand the part played by his father, George William Broadhead, a Town Hall clerk from Batley. The author's research was inspired by his father's diary of 1916 which he handed to the authorshortly before his death in 1980 saying, 'Here lad you might be interested in this'. Like manyold soldiers he rarely spoke about the war but the diary and the author's use of official records, newspaper reports and memoirs reveal the stark horror of what faced the nation's youth. Fewof the original Pals survived the war but George Broadhead's luck held. In 1918 he marrieda French girl, then worked for eighteen years with the Imperial War Graves Commission inFrance before returning to his home town to resume his earlier career. This is a story of anordinary soldier but a quite remarkable person.

"A Century of Remembrance is a study of one hundred outstanding British war memorials which commemorate 20th century conflicts from the Boer War to the Falklands and Gulf wars. The first described is a Boer War memorial unveiled on 5 November 1904, and the last is the Animals in War memorial unveiled in London on 24 November 2004. With a short description of the featured memorial's background and significance accompanied by photographs of the whole and detail, each entry is highly informative. The selection represents the work of numerous designers and artists, some like Edward Lutyens of world-renown, others virtually unknown. They come in a wide variety of forms such as statues, stained glass windows, arches, obelisks, cloisters, chapels, art galleries and even a carillon." "The aim of this book is to focus attention not just on the richness and range of our national memorials but also on the important work of The War Memorials Trust, which will benefit from the sale of this book."--BOOK JACKET.

An oral history of life in the trenches of the First World War. This is a companion book to an ambitious new BBC documentary series which aims to recreate the everyday life of soldiers in the First World War. A group of volunteers from the city of Hull will face life in a specially reconstructed trench in northern France under as many conditions as can realistically be recreated from the testimony of surviving veterans and the official Regimental War Diary. This companion book vividly reconstructs the reality of war - what it felt like to see the front line for the first time, how the trenches themselves were constructed, how soldiers passed their leisure hours, where they slept, what they ate. It takes an original new approach to the history of the Great War, bringing home the unimaginable horror by recreating in extraordinary detail the everyday realities of trench life.
