The epidemiological and clinical importance of bone metastases has long been recognised. For example, the incidence of bone metastases in breast and prostate cancers is 70%, whereas it is only 30 to 40% in metastatic lung cancer. In clinical terms, bone metastases have substantial negative effects on the patient's quality of life. Bone metastases have generally received insufficient attention because of the difficulty in quantifying them, which has left them outside the scope of therapeutic trials The justification for a textbook on the subject of bone metastases is the quite remarkable progress made recently in the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in osteogenesis and osteolysis and their development for therapeutic purposes. The treatment of malignant hypercalcaemia has also been revolutionised by the use of bisphosphonates. The Textbook of Bone Metastases presents a broad approach to recent progress in all fields related to bone metastases, ranging from epidemiology to the pathophysiology of bone metastases and therapeutics.. This book provides a better understanding of recent advances and, more importantly, will give clinicians all the information needed to help them in the clinical and therapeutic management of patients with bone metastases.

This volume brings together the key research issues in clinical and laboratory science relating to metastasis in prostate cancer. It is especially suitable for those in the field, whether physicians and/or scientists, and whether in active research or in training, who wish to broaden their understanding, with regard to their own discipline, and also to another. It is also a resource for those whose research is in metastasis, but in diseases other than prostate cancer. The intention of this volume is to help to empower those who seek to further exploit the potential for translational research in this field. Written by a team of internationally recognised experts, the scope ranges from the most fundamental aspects of the molecular biology of metastasis, to the patient in the clinic. The therapeutic approaches range from conventional drug design to immunogene therapy. Prostate cancer is an area of intense research effort, and this book provides a window on contemporary research in this important area.

This work, a valuable resource on prostate and testicular cancers, not only offers basic information about recent clinical and experimental developments concerning these tumors, but also features ``consensus'' reports that present summations of the knowledge and experience of internationally acclaimed clinicians and scientists working in specific areas of the field. The book provides a framework for assessing the clinical relevance and therapeutic potential of the various new developments discussed. Among the specific topics covered by contributors are: diagnosis and management of localized prostate cancer; oncogene expression in prostate cancer; biopsy techniques and cytology; management of seminoma; the role of lymph node dissection in testicular cancer; and pathological classifications of testicular tumors.
