The long, hot summers spent on Fire Island have always been the highlight of the year for sisters Riley and Alice. Not least because it is there that they always see Paul: their next-door neighbour, Riley's best friend in all the world, and the only boy Alice has ever loved. Then Paul goes to university, and he leaves them both behind him. Three years later, as Alice prepares to start Law School, Paul returns. The trick, he tells himself, is to have what he had without destroying it. But their world will change irresistibly, wonderfully and tragically, with every breath they take.

The Netherlands is known among foreigners today for its cheese and its windmills, its Golden Age paintings and its experimentation in social policies such as cannabis and euthanasia. Yet the historical background for any of these quintessentially Dutch achievements is often unfamiliar to outsiders. This Concise History offers an overview of this surprisingly little-known but fascinating country. Beginning with the first humanoid settlers, the book follows the most important contours of Dutch history, from Roman times through to the Habsburgs, the Dutch Republic and the Golden Age. The author, a modernist, pays particularly close attention to recent developments, including the signature features of contemporary Dutch society. In addition to being a political history, this overview also gives systematic attention to social and economic developments, as well as in religion, the arts and the Dutch struggle against the water. The Dutch Caribbean is also included in the narrative.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, a combination of coastal defence for the homeland and fleet defence for the East Indies became the established naval strategy for the Royal Dutch Navy and set the template for the world wars. Battleships were too expensive to build and maintain, so after World War I, there was significant investment in submarine development and construction. A handful of modern light cruisers and a new class of destroyers were also constructed during the interwar years to serve as a small Fleet-in-Being in the East Indies, as well as to support the actions of the navy's submarines. The light cruiser HNLMS De Ruyter and the Java-class light cruisers were the most powerful units of the new fleet whilst the backbone of the destroyer fleet was the Admiralen-class and the Tromp-class of destroyer leaders. Beginning in December 1941, the Dutch Navy played a very active role in the defence of the East Indies against the Japanese during World War II. The Battle of the Java Sea at the end of February 1942 crushed Dutch naval power in the East Indies, sinking the cruisers Java and De Ruyter and killing Admiral Karel Doorman. However, several Dutch surface warships and submarines continued the fight against the Axis powers alongside the Allies until the end of World War II, including a pair of British-built destroyers, Van Galen and Tjerk Hiddes. This beautifully illustrated book from a leading scholar on Dutch military history provides a comprehensive guide to the Royal Netherlands Navy of the World War II period, complete with detailed cutaways and battleplates of the fleet in action.

If, like author Mary Blocksma, you wish you knew more about the Great Lakes woods and lake country you think of as God's country, this is the book for you. Upon her return from California to Michigan, Blocksma made a simple New Year's resolution: to take four or five walks a year, and each time identify ONE NEW THING. Before long, she was on familiar terms with most of what she saw. In this book, Blocksma shares her discoveries in an evocative and inspiring journal, accompanied by excellent tips on how to tell her finds from similar species. This is a guide for the amateur who, until now, has found nature identification intimidating; the expert who knows wildflowers but not birds, or birds but not trees; and the armchair explorer yearning for a walk on the wild side. Great Lakes Nature offers a positive approach to environmental awareness: "Familiarity breeds intimacy, and intimacy, concern," writes Blocksma in her introduction. "Entering the woods was like moving into a neighborhood where I knew almost no one. Now I have befriended so many inhabitants that if any of them moved away, I would know and feel bereft."

Marie Bostwick delivers a captivating novel of soul mates discovering each other as the country faces its greatest challenge. . . Morgan Glennon's destiny points straight up into Oklahoma's clear, blue sky. It's been that way since he was four years old, imagining the famous flier father he's never met. Morgan leaves college to enlist as a Navy pilot, and his whole world suddenly changes when America goes to war. Watching his friends fall in battle, robs Morgan of the joy he always felt in the air. It will take one very unusual woman to help him get it back. . . Georgia Jean Carter learned early never to rely on a man for anything but trouble. Airplanes are different: they take a girl places most boyfriends can't. Remarkably, the war makes it possible for Georgia to do her part as a pilot. Flying with the WASPs brings a special sense of belonging--yet there's something missing that Georgia doesn't recognize until a brief encounter sets her dreaming about a young flyboy she barely knows. . . Praise for Marie Bostwick and Fields of Gold "A touching story." --Patricia Gaffney "Captivating and hauntingly beautiful. . .a true gem." --Romantic Times, 4 1⁄2 stars "A gripping, heartwarming story." --Dorothy Garlock on Fields of Gold

Object of Balance is a fantasy about nine little fairies who find themselves embarking on a great quest through hostile lands to save their world, Andel. It is a race against time. They must find one of the objects the great wizards were using to keep everyone in their world safe. It has been stolen from the wizards, and it must be found and brought back before it is too late. What the creature that stole the object didn’t know was that the object was keeping something even more evil back. Without the object, their world will become riddled with all the storms the elements can throw at them. It is not all bad. The fairies do find that through their travels, they meet many new creatures who become their friends and allies. Well, with the fate of the world in the balance, wouldn’t you be willing to help? When the wizards told the fairies they had to go and get the object back, they were shocked. How could nine little fairies possibly do this? The object itself was bigger than all of them put together! The wizards told them they had to; there was no choice. The wizards could not go as they had to stay and hold the other evil at bay until the object was put back into its place. Still, the fairies worried but did as they were told. They would find a way! Object of Balance is a warm and wonderful tale full to the brim with many different characters that I hope everyone of all ages will love. There are ferocious dragons, a giant as tall as a mountain, ogres, witches, trolls, and so many others. It is family oriented, and it has many lessons to be learned. Enjoy!
