The origins of billiards, pool, snooker, and other cue sports date back centuries, and The Complete Book of Billiards is the essential reference guide to these and all associated cue games. The book is both informative and entertaining as it defines the whole of billiard terminology within a historical context. In accessible A-to-Z format, with hundreds of archival illustrations and prints, most of the entries are brief encyclopedia-type paragraphs containing anecdotes, quotes, and analysis of the term. Thoroughly cross-referenced, with an extensive bibliography as well as several appendices, this is a particularly comprehensive guide. Here is such information as: ¸ À la Royale -- an obsolete game of English billiards that allowed three players to participate ¸ Bar Pool -- pocket billiards usually played on coin-operated tables ¸ Dress -- to prepare the tip of a cue stick ¸ Pool Shark -- an expert but unsavory player ¸ Skyrocket Shot -- the cue ball takes a curved path A terrific source for the serious player as well as a fascinating look back for the lover of history, The Complete Book of Billiards is an authoritative guide to cue games.

Antonio de Ulloa (1716–95) was a Spanish scientist and mathematician. In 1734 he was asked by Philip V of Spain to join the French geodesic expedition to measure the circumference of the Earth at the equator, and accordingly in 1735 Ulloa and his fellow scientist Jorge Juan y Santacilia (1713–73) travelled to South America, staying until 1744. These volumes contain the English translation of Ulloa's account of South America, first published in 1758. The work was very popular, producing five subsequent editions: this reissue is of the fourth edition of 1806. It provides insights into the social, religious and economic institutions of colonial South America. Volume 2 contains descriptions of the cities and provinces of Lima, Concepcin (in Chile) and Buenos Aires and of the British colony of Boston, visited on the return journey, together with the first ethnological description in English of the indigenous peoples of Brazil.

Investigative reporters Newfield (NY Daily News) and Barrett (Village Voice) attempt to expose the Koch administration's descent into corruption and criminality. No bibliography. Dealing primarily with the time of the industrial radial city (1870-1960), Riess (history, Northeastern Illinois U.) examines the complex interrelationship and interdependence of sport and the city. He shows how demographic growth, evolving spatial arrangements, social reform, the formation of class and ethnic subcultures, the expansion of urban government, and the rise of political machines and crime syndicates all interacted to influence the development of American sport. Heavily annotated, with many striking bandw illustrations. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
