This long-awaited memoir from one of Britain's best-loved celebrities - a writer, broadcaster, activist, comic on stage, screen and radio for nearly forty years, presenter of QI and Great British Bake Off star - is an autobiography with a difference: as only Sandi Toksvig can tell it. 'Between the Stops is a sort of a memoir, my sort. It's about a bus trip really, because it's my view from the Number 12 bus (mostly top deck, the seat at the front on the right), a double-decker that plies its way from Dulwich, in South East London, where I was living, to where I sometimes work - at the BBC, in the heart of the capital. It's not a sensible way to write a memoir at all, probably, but it's the way things pop into your head as you travel, so it's my way'. From London facts including where to find the blue plaque for Una Marson, 'The first black woman programme maker at the BBC', to discovering the best Spanish coffee under Southwark's railway arches; from a brief history of lady gangsters at Elephant and Castle to memories of climbing Mount Sinai and, at the request of a fellow traveller, reading aloud the Ten Commandments; from the story behind Pissarro's painting of Dulwich Station to performing in Footlights with Emma Thompson; from painful memoires of being sent to Coventry while at a British boarding school to thinking about how Wombells Travelling Circus of 1864 haunts Peckham Rye;from anecdotes about meeting Prince Charles, Monica Lewinsky and Grayson Perry to Bake-Off antics; from stories of a real and lasting friendship with John McCarthy to the importance of family and the daunting navigation of the Zambezi River in her father's canoe, this Sandi Toksvig-style memoir is, as one would expect and hope, packed full of surprises. A funny and moving trip through memories, musings and the many delights on the Number 12 route, Between the Stops is also an inspiration to us all to get off our phones, look up and to talk to each other because as Sandi says: 'some of the greatest trips lie on our own doorstep'.

Welcome to the world of Slightly OFF, a college column where politicians are advised to create scandals for themselves (to get free media coverage), the Tooth Fairy is wanted by the FBI (for trafficking) and Jesus Christ and Jason Voorhees have a lot in common (they both came back from the dead, for instance). In Slightly OFF: God, Sex and All Stops in Between, the best of over four years of Slightly OFF is gathered. At times hilarious, serious, poignant, and psychotic, this is a collection that slices into every facet of American culture. It includes: -"Female Porn" The scientific study that proves once and for all that Cosmo is worse than Playboy. -"Frogs, Dogs and David Arquette" Why, in an era of information, do our commercials provide anything but? -"English 101" This is where your language came from. Unfortunately, it's been influenced by the French. -"I Killed Someone" A reflection on the time the author spent with Wanda Jean Allen, a death row inmate who made national headlines, just weeks before her execution. Once you read this, you may never look at your world the same way again. You certainly will never look at mustard the same way again.

Bel canto, or 'beautiful singing,' remains one of the most elusive performance styles vocalists strive to master. During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, composers routinely left the final shaping of recitatives, arias, and songs to performers, and singers treated scores freely so that inexpressively notated music could be turned into passionate declamation. In other words, vocalists saw their role more as one of re-creation than of simple interpretation. Familiarity with the range of strategies prominent singers of the past employed to unlock the eloquent expression hidden in scores enables modern performers to take a similar re-creative approach to enhancing the texts before them. In this first ever guide to bel canto, author Robert Toft provides singers with the tools they need not only to complete the creative process the composer began but also to bring scores to life in an historically-informed manner. Replete with illustrations based on excerpts from Italianate recitatives and arias by composers ranging from Handel to Rossini, the book offers discussions of the fundamental principles of expressive singing, each section including a practical application of the techniques involved. Drawing on a wealth of documents from the era, including treatises, scores, newspaper reviews, and letters, this book captures the breadth of practices singers used in the bel canto period. Complete with six scores (recitatives and/or arias) for performers to personalize through the old methods, and a companion website offering demonstrations of the principles involved, Bel Canto is an essential resource for any singer or vocal instructor wishing to explore and master historical techniques of interpretation and re-creation from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Ever noticed how technical swimming has become? There are so many fine points to all four strokes. You really need to break the stroke and its components down and work on them separately, and then put the stroke back together. In the process of doing this, you begin to understand much more about the stroke and about yourself. One of the best ways to refine your stroke, find efficiency in the water, and translate that to faster swimming, is to regularly build swim drills into your swim practices. In this eBook, you will find 125 drills covering freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and even sculling. Each drill has a title, a purpose, and a thorough description of the drill, along with key points to focus on when doing the drill. Not only will practicing drills help your stroke, your efficiency, and eventually your speed, drill work will also help liven up your practices, making them much more interesting and challenging. Doing so under the guidance of a coach and support of a team is even better, so find yourself a team. You won't regret it. If you are a masters swimmer, check out www.usms.org to find more information on US Masters Swimming, locate a team near you, and see everything this great sport has to offer. Dive right in. Like Carl Darling Buck's Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (1933), this book is an explanation of the similarities and differences between Greek and Latin morphology and lexicon through an account of their prehistory. It also aims to discuss the principal features of Indo-European linguistics. Greek and Latin are studied as a pair for cultural reasons only; as languages, they have little in common apart from their Indo-European heritage. Thus the only way to treat the historical bases for their development is to begin with Proto-Indo-European. The only way to make a reconstructed language like Proto-Indo-European intelligible and intellectually defensible is to present at least some of the basis for reconstructing its features and, in the process, to discuss reasoning and methodology of reconstruction (including a weighing of alternative reconstructions). The result is a compendious handbook of Indo-European phonology and morphology, and a vade mecum of Indo-European linguistics--the focus always remaining on Greek and Latin. The non-classical sources for historical discussion are mainly Vedic Sanskrit, Hittite, and Germanic, with occasional but crucial contributions from Old Irish, Avestan, Baltic, and Slavic.
