BrownTrout postcard books are first and foremost beautiful little books. There are over 120 subjects ranging from the sublime (Desert Light) to the slightly ridiculous (Outhouses). Each card is a token which reflects two directions: upon the addressee who receives a beautiful card with the sender's personal message; and on the sender who chose the card for the recipient. Whether you actually send them to friends and relations or simply save the books to enjoy yourself, BrownTrout's books of postcards are great products.

In this “lighthearted and pleasant read for mystery and animal aficionados,” murder makes a splash at a small-town aquarium (Kirkus Reviews). Twenty acres of prime Long Island beachfront property are up for sale, and the waterfront community is divided like the Hatfields and the McCoys. Environmentalists are lined up on the side of the local Clam Cove aquarium, and business owners are aligned with millionaire land developer Lucien Moray, represented by attorney Samuel Wong—who has recently disappeared. When a body is found in a nearby inlet, wildlife magazine reporter Kristy Farrell and her veterinarian daughter take up the mystery. They discover deep secrets among the aquarium staff—secrets that point to one of them as the killer. The aquarium is soon plagued with numerous accidents, one of which threatens the lives of the two amateur sleuths. On top of all this, a second murder occurs, adding to the intrigue. Solving the mystery isn’t Farrell’s only challenge. When her widowed septuagenarian mother announces her engagement, Farrell suspects that her suitor isn’t on the up and up. Now she’s racing to discover his past while staying ahead of people whose dark secrets threaten her life… “Schmitt manages to neatly balance a considerable array of plotlines, while also employing a sufficient amount of misdirection to keep the murderer’s identity uncertain…The wildlife motif works well, providing a distinctive backdrop to the mystery and a ready supply of aquatic facts.”—Kirkus Reviews

Postcards, individually and collectively, contain a great deal of information that can be of real value to students and researchers. Postcards in the Library gives compelling reasons why libraries should take a far more active and serious interest in establishing and maintaining postcard collections and in encouraging the use of these collections. It explains the nature and accessibility of existing postcard collections; techniques for acquiring, arranging, preserving, and handling collections; and ways to make researchers and patrons aware of these collections. Postcards in the Library asserts that, in most cases, existing postcard collections are a vastly underutilized scholarly resource. Editor Norman D. Stevens urges librarians to help change this since postcards, as items for mass consumption and often with no apparent conscious literary or social purpose, are a true reflection of the society in which they were produced. Stevens claims that messages written on postcards may also reveal a great deal about individual and/or societal attitudes and ideas. Chapters in Postcards in the Library are written by librarians who manage postcard collections, postcard collectors, and researchers. Some of the authors have undertaken major research projects that demonstrate the ways in which postcards can be used in research, and that have begun to establish a standard methodology for the analysis of postcards. They write about: major postcard collections, including the Institute of Deltiology and the Curt Teich Postcard Archives the use of postcards for scholarly research postcard conservation and preservation, arrangement and organization, and importance and value Postcards in the Library describes the postcard collections in a variety of libraries of different kinds and sizes and indicates very real ways in which the effective use of postcard collections can result in and contribute to substantive, scholarly publications. It also offers advice and suggestions on the myriad issues that libraries face in handling these ephemeral fragments of popular culture. Special collections librarians, postcard collectors, postcard dealers, and historical societies will find the information in Postcards in the Library refreshing and practical. Libraries with established postcard collections or those thinking about developing postcard collections will use it as a valuable planning tool and start-to-finish guide.

Soldiers and Their Horses

The soldier-horse relationship was nurtured by The British Army because it made the soldier and his horse into an effective fighting unit. Soldiers and their Horses explores a complex relationship forged between horses and humans in extreme conditions. As both a social history of Britain in the early twentieth century and a history of the British Army, Soldiers and their Horses reconciles the hard pragmatism of war with the imaginative and emotional. By carefully overlapping the civilian and the military, by juxtaposing "sense" and "sentimentality," and by considering institutional policy alongside individual experience, the soldier and his horse are re-instated as co-participators in The Great War. Soldiers and their Horses provides a valuable contribution to current thinking about the role of horses in history.
