This new early literacy textbook (birth through age nine) focuses on creative literacy instruction through active participation of teachers, parents, and children -- providing preservice teachers with practical strategies and activities that can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse learners. It offers a comprehensive view of literacy development and instruction, including assessment, phonemic awareness, and emergent literacy, phonics, vocabulary, reading, writing, and arts integration in diverse classrooms. The authors' holistic approach explains why and how reading and language arts should be taught from the perspective of the whole child, with an emphasis on creativity in a nurturing learning environment. Their unique perspective integrates the arts, educational psychology, and literacy instruction, represented throughout the text by the incorporation of the cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical parts of the self into a visual Holistic Model of Literacy. "This theory-to-practice, transdisciplinary book series addresses the language difficulties associated with communication disorders and developmental disabilities. Grounded in state-of-the-art research, yet practical in orientation, the volumes in this series are invaluable resources for professionals and graduate students who work with learners with language delays or communication impairment." "Profound changes in legislation, technology, and philosophy have transformed language intervention for preschool and elementary-age children with language impairments. This comprehensive book examines the developments of the past decade, analyzes research, and evaluates the efficacy of recent innovations. Chapters provide practical intervention strategies for a variety of language problems and prepare interventionists to meet the demands of the classroom by addressing topics ranging from cultural awareness to the effectiveness of computers in intervention." "This resource also expands current norms, outlining innovative approaches, proposing challenging goals, and suggesting specific research. Speech-language pathologists and students in speech-language pathology, special educators and reading specialists, and researchers and clinicians in child development will turn to this volume for its appraisal of recent changes in language intervention and its recommendations for service delivery."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Reading For Kids (and Adults!) Teen and Adult Version is the same book as the original Reading For Kids but the cover graphic is more appealing to teens and adults. This is a phonics based reading program for all ages. It has over 260 pages packed full of reproducible worksheets, flashcards, and stories to develop reading skills in students. This book is designed for anyone to use to help someone learn to read. If you can speak English and read this paragraph, you have all the skills necessary to use this book. The Reading For Kids (and Adults!) beginning phonics reading program is a ten lesson, systematic approach to teaching reading. It is suitable for teaching in a tutoring situation where a teacher only spends one or two hours a week with their students or daily as in a classroom or home school. From the very first lesson, where only five letters and their most common sounds are taught, students begin to read real text. Each lesson builds on previous lessons. The activities and reading material in each lesson includes only words and sentences from the previous lessons. This allows students to slowly build their phonetic base while reading in real context. The Reading For Kids (and Adults!) beginning phonics reading program teaches the most common sound for each of the English alphabet's twenty-six letters and covers three basic skill levels: Level A Sound-letter recognition Level B Blending, segmenting and sight words Level C Creating meaning and comprehension
