In 1949, a small book had a big impact on education. In just over one hundred pages, Ralph W. Tyler presented the concept that curriculum should be dynamic, a program under constant evaluation and revision. Curriculum had always been thought of as a static, set program, and in an era preoccupied with student testing, he offered the innovative idea that teachers and administrators should spend as much time evaluating their plans as they do assessing their students. Since then, Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction has been a standard reference for anyone working with curriculum development. Although not a strict how-to guide, the book shows how educators can critically approach curriculum planning, studying progress and retooling when needed. Its four sections focus on setting objectives, selecting learning experiences, organizing instruction, and evaluating progress. Readers will come away with a firm understanding of how to formulate educational objectives and how to analyze and adjust their plans so that students meet the objectives. Tyler also explains that curriculum planning is a continuous, cyclical process, an instrument of education that needs to be fine-tuned. This emphasis on thoughtful evaluation has kept Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction a relevant, trusted companion for over sixty years. And with school districts across the nation working feverishly to align their curriculum with Common Core standards, Tyler's straightforward recommendations are sound and effective tools for educators working to create a curriculum that integrates national objectives with their students' needs.

Subjectivity Curriculum and Society

In this book Tero Autio traces not only the key philosophical currents that structure traditional Anglo-American instrumental curriculum theory and Didaktik theories of curriculum which are lesser-known in the U.S., but also the divide between them and, implicitly, the opportunities for traversing this divide. Using careful historical and theoretical exposition to work through the tension between the two intellectual traditions, he describes a different perspective--one that counters the current move toward politicization and commodification. Autio's articulation of the complexity, intellectual honesty, and educational value of theoretical breakthroughs over the past few decades, especially in the American field of curriculum studies, leads to a better understanding of the complicated nature of curriculum work, as contrasted with the simplified demands of actual curriculum theory, policy, and practice worldwide. This original work of great intellectual power and theoretical significance is an essential text for scholars in the fields curriculum studies, philosophy of education, and comparative education and for graduate-level courses in these areas.

This text begins with the basic elements of education—curriculum, instruction, and policy—and examines how these core principles have been defined, refined, and applied in the name of teaching. Five essential questions—Who is an educated person? What is worth knowing? What is learning? What is good teaching? What is the place of the public school in society?—provide a framework for further consideration of the three central themes. In addition, print and non-print supplements, multiple points of view on controversial issues, and access to primary resource readings help students understand how theory relates to real-life teaching scenarios. Primary Source Readings boxes present primary source documents on a topic that is central to the chapter in which it appears. Each document is followed with questions, entitled "Thinking Critically About the Issues," that encourage students to analyze and develop an opinion about what they have just read. Voices of Principle and Promise boxes contain a first-person account of a topic that is critical to education and central to the chapter in which they appear. Chapter-ending pedagogy includes Applying What You've Learned application activities, Web Sites to Explore, and Questions for Reflection. Houghton Mifflin Video Cases, four- to six-minute video modules presenting real classroom scenarios, enable students to observe the day-to-day challenges and rewards of teaching from the convenience of their computers. Available on the Online Teaching and Study Centers, HM Video Cases are enhanced by classroom artifacts, Viewing Questions, Interview Transcripts, Key Terms, and bonus video footage.
