When looking back over my eighty-six years, it is hard to imagine that those years are behind me. I thank God for every one. Many told stories that only I can tell. I wish there were more years spent with my two daughters, for they grew up so fast. In writing my autobiography, God has given me remembrance of the past. I pray that this true story will hold dear to my daughters’ (Christy and Lori’s) hearts, giving them a little map of their heritage. There were many bumps in the road, but God had straightened them all out.

Was murder planned for a vacation on the island of Capri? Will a hunter's longing for his love be realized? What does the dark world of death look like? What is an easy non-medical remedy for nightmares? The author resolves these and other intriguing questions in this collection of poetry and prose. Readers will go to Tahiti on a sailboat with an intrepid young woman who dares to travel alone with a strange man. And they will cross the Yellow Sea with a lonely man who reads Chinese philosophy. They will find sexuality in Gone to Hell, sad moments in Pit of Pain and happy hours in Where Gone. Other poems offer compelling commentaries on our lives and times, past and present. More than two dozen short prose pieces with humor, fantasy or confrontation add to the wide range of poetry subjects. The death of a bullying bigot is described in Trouble. In Anya, a young girl falls in love with a handsome gypsy boy. An innocent woman dies in Murder in Elmer, and in Mirrors, Kate sees events from her past. Many verses and short tales in this varied menu of fiction have been published previously.

Multicore and GPU Programming offers broad coverage of the key parallel computing skillsets: multicore CPU programming and manycore "massively parallel" computing. Using threads, OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA, it teaches the design and development of software capable of taking advantage of today’s computing platforms incorporating CPU and GPU hardware and explains how to transition from sequential programming to a parallel computing paradigm. Presenting material refined over more than a decade of teaching parallel computing, author Gerassimos Barlas minimizes the challenge with multiple examples, extensive case studies, and full source code. Using this book, you can develop programs that run over distributed memory machines using MPI, create multi-threaded applications with either libraries or directives, write optimized applications that balance the workload between available computing resources, and profile and debug programs targeting multicore machines. Comprehensive coverage of all major multicore programming tools, including threads, OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA Demonstrates parallel programming design patterns and examples of how different tools and paradigms can be integrated for superior performance Particular focus on the emerging area of divisible load theory and its impact on load balancing and distributed systems Download source code, examples, and instructor support materials on the book's companion website

THOUGHTS AND MEMORIES

This tome was written in a free flow way so that I can write my thoughts and memories as I think of them. Some of my feelings may hurt some people and some of my thoughts and memories might make you smile. In no way did I write with either intention, I wrote this to express my feelings and in no way was it meant to hurt anyone. The words I have written are the truth as I see it and feel it. This book is meant to chronicle my adult life with family, friends and business. In no way do I find that I am anyone special but with all my thoughts I would like to pass on the structure of who I am to all those close to me. I can only hope that my grandchildren and all future generations to come will know who I was and how I may have contributed in helping them in molding their lives. This book is dedicated to all those who have helped me become who I am. With a special thanks to my wonderful wife Cheryl who has not only stood by my side and encouraged me to continue to write but has made me happier than I have ever been for the the past eight years. Cheryl was the only one who was able to lift me up from the worst despair imaginable.

From Memory to Memorial

On September 11, 2001, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, became a center of national attention when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a former strip mine in sleepy Somerset County, killing all forty passengers and crew aboard. This is the story of the memorialization that followed, from immediate, unofficial personal memorials to the ten-year effort to plan and build a permanent national monument to honor those who died. It is also the story of the unlikely community that developed through those efforts. As the country struggled to process the events of September 11, temporary memorials—from wreaths of flowers to personalized T-shirts and flags—appeared along the chain-link fences that lined the perimeter of the crash site. They served as evidence of the residents’ need to pay tribute to the tragedy and of the demand for an official monument. Weaving oral accounts from Shanksville residents and family members of those who died with contemporaneous news reports and records, J. William Thompson traces the creation of the monument and explores the larger narrative of memorialization in America. He recounts the crash and its sobering immediate impact on area residents and the nation, discusses the history of and controversies surrounding efforts to permanently commemorate the event, and relates how locals and grief-stricken family members ultimately bonded with movers and shakers at the federal level to build the Flight 93 National Memorial. A heartfelt examination of memory, place, and the effects of tragedy on small-town America, this fact-driven account of how the Flight 93 National Memorial came to be is a captivating look at the many ways we strive as communities to forever remember the events that change us.
