Domestic issues, chastity, morality, marriage and love are concerns we typically associate with Victorian female characters. But what happens when men in Victorian novels begin to engage in this type of feminine discourse? While we are familiar with certain Victorian women seeking freedom by moving beyond the domestic sphere, there is an equally interesting movement by the domestic man into the private space through his performance of femininity. This book defines the domesticated bachelor, examines the effects of the blurring of boundaries between the public and private spheres, and traces the evolution of the public discourse on masculinity in novels such as Bronte's Shirley, Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret, Eliot's Daniel Deronda, and Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This bachelor, along with his female counterpart, the New Woman, opens up for discussion new definitions of Victorian masculinity and gender boundaries and blurs the rigid distinction between the gendered spaces thought to be in place during the Victorian period.

This study is based upon responses to questionnaires sent in December 1956 to chairmen of departments of anthropology, economics, history, political science, and sociology in a sample of 319 institutions of higher education. The survey just completed provides the first data ever assembled on a large scale of social science requirements for bachelor's degrees. It shows the extent to which institutions of higher education have such requirements and the extent to which anthropology, economics, history, political science, and sociology each may be taken by the student in satisfaction of them. It then proceeds to a study in depth of the courses most frequently taken by students for this purpose. The data thus assembled can be used by administrators, department heads, and professors for reappraising the role of the social sciences in general curricular requirements, and for re-examining those courses shown to be the only ones to which a majority of students are likely ever to be exposed. Appended are: (1) Cover letter and questionnaire employed; and (2) Tabular Material. (Contains 11 tables and 18 footnotes.) [Best copy available has been provided.].

Excerpt from Bachelor's Theses The question of the phase relation of current and pressure ln alternating current circuits has been a source of great perplexity to the student of alternating current phenanena and to the designer of alternating current apparatus. Until quite recently, little was known of these relations as is shown by the fact that almost all of the literature on the subject has appeared within the last ten or fifteen years. As further evidence it might be stated that in 1887 Willimn Stanley, Jr., read a paper before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers on The Phenanena of Retardation in the Induction Coil, which clearly brought out the fact that men, who to-day are foremost among the electrical engineers of the country, did not then know wlw the product of current times pressure did not give the energy used in an alternating current circuit containing self-induction, the same as in a direct current circuit.
