Birthdates, deathdates, credit lists, cross-referenced with alternate show names, Archives of the Airwaves far surpasses any book on radio history ever before published. Volume 2 contains everything from Dad and Junior to Bob Hope!ROGER C. PAULSON began his passion for radio during the 1940's with his juvenile ear glued to the loudspeaker. In 1946, while on a trip to New York City with his parents, he became very excited to actually see live broadcasts of shows he had often heard over the air. All of this eventually led to his forty year career in broadcasting. During the 1970's he began collecting tapes and books on old-time radio. After listening to the tapes and reading the books he decided to author a complete, accurate and readable encyclopedia on OTR he titled Archives of the Airwaves. Some twenty years later, upon completing the time-consuming research and writing, you are now reading the result.

Before television, radio was the sole source of simultaneous mass entertainment in America. The medium served as launching pad for the careers of countless future stars of stage and screen. Singers and conductors became legends by offering musical entertainment directly to Americans in their homes, vehicles, and places of work and play. This volume presents biographies of 24 renowned performers who spent a significant portion of their careers in front of a radio microphone. Profiles of individuals like Steve Allen, Rosemary Clooney, Bob Crosby, Johnny Desmond, Jo Stafford, and Percy Faith, along with groups such as the Ink Spots and the King’s Men, reveal the private lives behind the public personas and bring to life the icons and ambiance of a bygone era.

Founded as a counterweight to the Communist broadcasters in East Germany, Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) became one of the most successful public information operations conducted against the Soviet Bloc. Cold War on the Airwaves examines the Berlin-based organization's history and influence on the political worldview of the people--and government--on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Nicholas Schlosser draws on broadcast transcripts, internal memoranda, listener letters, and surveys by the U.S. Information Agency to profile RIAS. Its mission: to undermine the German Democratic Republic with propaganda that, ironically, gained in potency by obeying the rules of objective journalism. Throughout, Schlosser examines the friction inherent in such a contradictory project and propaganda's role in shaping political culture. He also portrays how RIAS's primarily German staff influenced its outlook and how the organization both competed against its rivals in the GDR and pushed communist officials to alter their methods in order to keep listeners. From the occupation of Berlin through the airlift to the construction of the Berlin Wall, Cold War on the Airwaves offers an absorbing view of how public diplomacy played out at a flashpoint of East-West tension.
