With an introduction by Andrew Solomon 'It stands alone in the literature of manic depression for its bravery, brilliance and beauty.' Oliver Sacks I was used to my mind being my best friend. Now, all of a sudden, my mind had turned on me: it mocked me for my vapid enthusiasms; it laughed at all of my foolish plans; it no longer found anything interesting or enjoyable or worthwhile. Dr Kay Redfield Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic depression (bipolar disorder) - and has experienced its terrors and cruel allure first-hand. While pursuing her career in medicine, she was affected by the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic lows that afflicted many of her patients. From her jubilant childhood to the disquiet that has dominated her adult life, she charts a journey through her own mind, and those of others. An Unquiet Mind is a definitive examination of manic depression from both sides: doctor and patient, the healer and the healed. A classic memoir of enormous candour and courage, it teems with the wit and wisdom of its creator.

This collection of memoirs and essays focuses mainly on Martignetti's adult years, and features the pivotal characters of his ever-entertaining personal narrative. From the cascade of memories and emotions triggered by an accidental butterfly killing in "Cocoon Talk," to the homicidal impulses prompted by a visit to his boyhood home in "Sign," from the heartbreaking to the hilarious musings inspired by beloved pets in "Mochajava" and "Dog," and throughout the uncensored sexcapades of "Mad," "The Wild," and "Feast of the Hungry Ghost," Martignetti's colloquial, humorous, and intimate style will keep you riveted, crack you open, enthrall and embrace you with an honesty normally reserved for not even the closest of friends.

Can nutrients successfully reduce and even stop symptoms of bipolar disorder and other mental disorders? Can Lyme disease treatment stop psychosis? Can antibodies to a milk protein contribute to mania? These are some of the questions answered in this revised edition of Nutrients Quiet the Unquiet Brain. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Moyer updates his readers on his family’s journey by presenting research findings from the 12 intervening years since the book was first published. Part medical memoir, part medical detective story, the book describes the author’s four-generation bipolar family odyssey that led him to paths less traveled. Moyer describes his efforts to help his father and son, whose lives were severely disrupted by mood swings and psychotic episodes. While trying to cope with the consequences of the illness, he explores the role of genes, foods, vaccines, microbes and nutrients. He discusses multiple biological triggers and leading edge interventions for those suffering from bipolar and other mental disorders. He explores new ways to assess and treat what he now calls biobehavioral syndromes. The book gives readers a view into bipolar disorder through the writings of his father and his son. He critically examines assumptions and practices in the justice and mental health care system that adversely impact those called the mentally ill. He describes new ways for patients, family members, education, criminal justice and mental health care professionals to understand and respond to mental illness. The book was the first of what ultimately became The Transformation Trilogy, three books that collectively argue for a fundamental transformation in the response of society, and, most importantly, the mental health care industry, to victims of mental illness.

The definitive work on the profound and surprising links between manic-depression and creativity, from the bestselling psychologist of bipolar disorders who wrote An Unquiet Mind. One of the foremost psychologists in America, “Kay Jamison is plainly among the few who have a profound understanding of the relationship that exists between art and madness” (William Styron). The anguished and volatile intensity associated with the artistic temperament was once thought to be a symptom of genius or eccentricity peculiar to artists, writers, and musicians. Her work, based on her study as a clinical psychologist and researcher in mood disorders, reveals that many artists subject to exalted highs and despairing lows were in fact engaged in a struggle with clinically identifiable manic-depressive illness. Jamison presents proof of the biological foundations of this disease and applies what is known about the illness to the lives and works of some of the world's greatest artists including Lord Byron, Vincent Van Gogh, and Virginia Woolf.
