"This volume is the first anthology of poetic writings on slavery from America, Britain, and around the Atlantic during the Enlightenment - the crucial period that saw the height of the slave trade but also the origins of the anti-slavery movement. Bringing together more than four hundred poems and excerpts from longer works that were written by more than two hundred and fifty poets, both famous and unknown, the book charts the emergence of slavery as part of the collective consciousness of the English-speaking world. The book includes: poems by forty women, ranging from abolitionists Hannah More and Mary Robinson to Frances Seymour, the Countess of Herford; works by more than twenty African or African American poets, including familiar names (Phillis Wheatley), intriguing figures (Afro-Dutch Latin scholar Johannes Capitein), and newly rediscovered black poets (an anonymous veteran of the Revolutionary War); and poetry by such canonical writers as Dryden, Defoe, Pope, Johnson, Blake, Boswell, Burns, Wordsworth, and Coleridge." "The poems speak of the themes of slavery: capture, torture, endurance, rebellion, thwarted romances, and spiritual longing. They also raise intriguing questions about the contradications between cultural attitudes and public policy of the time. Writers such as these, suggests editor James Basker, were not complicit in the imperial project or indifferent about slavery but actually laid the groundwork for the political changes that would follow."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This is an exciting tale of the courage of 16-year-old Grace Bussell, an ordinary teenage girl who is thrust into an extraordinary situation when a steamship runs aground near her home on the south-west coast of Australia in 1876. Using eyewitness accounts and other historical documents of the time, the author brings this compelling true story alive. On the night that the Georgette leaves Fremantle, the ship starts taking on water. With the water rising, the situation becomes desperate and some of the passengers are herded onto a lifeboat, only to be thrown into the chilly water after the Georgette, struck by a huge wave, ploughs into the little boat. What follows is a story of acts of bravery, as frantic attempts to rescue the drowning are made. When the Bussells hear the news of a ship that has run aground on the coast near their home, Grace doesn't hesitate and leaps on her horse, riding for an hour to get to the sinking ship. There she and Sam, the family's stockman, gallop into the wild surf to save the remaining crew and passengers.

"A fully-equipped duke costs as much to keep up a two Dreadnoughts. They are just as great a terror and they last longer". So said David Lloyd George, the fiery Welsh duke-baiter in 1909. "Amazing Grace" surveys the dukes of Great Britain in their prime, chiefly in the 18th and 19th centuries. Dukes were expected to bring something extra to the grand manner, writes E.S. Turner, "something which unmistakably conveyed that here was a man who owned Belgravia or Eastbourne or Ben Lomond". He offers an anecdote led study of "godhead, eccentricity, noblesse oblige, self-indulgence and landlordism"; but his eye for the outrageous does not prevent him from paying tribute to those dukes to whom humanity has been much indebted. In these pages can be found a Duke of Somerset who cut #20,000 from a daughter's inheritance because she sat down while he slept; an heir to the Duke of Richmond who embarked on the Grand Tour within minutes of contracting a marriage of convenience with a Georgette Heyer-like conclusion; and a Duke of Northumberland who defiantly assured a Coal Commission that he owned all the minerals in his lands right down to the centre of the earth.

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Cloister Walk, a book about Christianity, spirituality, and rediscovered faith. Struggling with her return to the Christian church after many years away, Kathleen Norris found it was the language of Christianity that most distanced her from faith. Words like "judgment," "faith," "dogma," "salvation," "sinner"—even "Christ"—formed what she called her "scary vocabulary," words that had become so codified or abstract that their meanings were all but impenetrable. She found she had to wrestle with them and make them her own before they could confer their blessings and their grace. Blending history, theology, storytelling, etymology, and memoir, Norris uses these words as a starting point for reflection, and offers a moving account of her own gradual conversion. She evokes a rich spirituality rooted firmly in the chaos of everyday life—and offers believers and doubters alike an illuminating perspective on how we can embrace ancient traditions and find faith in the contemporary world.

Although his beautiful wife, Amelia, is now gone, her exuberance shines from within his two grandchildren. As Sebastian joins his children in raising a glass to his late wife, his eyes fill with tears. He does not know it yet, but three years from that Christmas, he will return to France and purchase the old stone house and property his parents once owned. As Sebastian’s childhood home in France becomes a part of his life, the Lavalle family experiences crippling miner strikes, the Falklands War, and severe recessions. When his daughter, Abby, eventually follows her heart to the United States, she is reunited with her soulmate, the young Father Gabriel. As she embarks on a fascinating journey into the unknown, she meets Byron Grant, a world-famous magician, his wife and children, and Byron’s dear friend, Dr Andrew Mason, a divorced father of two. As both men and their families reach out to Abby for different reasons, she finds love in the most unexpected place of all. Amazing Grace continues the multi-faceted, compelling saga of the Lavalle family as their tapestry weaves ordinary events with extraordinary circumstances.
