The XXX Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences took place in Vancouver, Canada, in July 1986; and this Volume contains a selection of the Review Lectures which formed part of the Congress programme. They cover most of the areas of contemporary physiology and were presented by distinguished scientists from many parts of the world. An innovation at this Congress was the inclusion in the programme of a number of lectures devoted to historical subjects. These lectures attracted large audiences at the meetings, and three of them also appear in this book. Finally, the Plenary Lectures which formed part of the opening and closing ceremonies and which deal with some aspects of Canadian physiological history, find a place here as well. The Editors are grateful to all of the authors who provided the manuscripts which go to make up this book, and to John Donald for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of the final text; as well of course to all of the contributors whose participation made the Congress the success which it was. It is hoped that this Volume will provide a useful memento of the event.

Franklin and his colleagues have distilled years of research on the decomposition of woody debris into a comprehensive treatment of both the nature and importance of this process in a variety of environments. Vogt and her colleagues also deal with an aspect of decomposition, focusing instead on the importance of the death and decay of root material. Finally, Hartenstein presents a lively discussion on the serious consequences of soil organic carbon deficiency. Combining man made organic waste and earthworm based biotechnology might help in managing carbon poor soils.****FROM THE PREFACE: Over recent years physiological plant ecology has been one of the most active areas of ecological research. It offers a prospect of explaining community function in terms of how the physiological properties of individual plants relate to patterns of microclimate generated in the community itself. However, the strategies of investigation and measurement techniques of the physiological ecologist frequently require very detailed work on just small amounts of material. Providing an integrated assessment of community function from such investigations may not be straightforward.

Fishes are very successful vertebrates and have adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions, from the deep ocean to the smallest brook or pond. The physiological background to these environmental adaptations is, obviously, far from clear, and provides fish physiologists with many challenges. The number of extant fish species has been estimated to be in excess of 20000, and only relatively few of these have been subject to physiological studies. Yet among these animals can be found many physiological systems different from those of the land-dwelling vertebrates, and also systems similar to those of the 'higher' vertebrates but at a different level of phylogenetic development. Apart from the rapidly increasing interest in basic fish physi ology, the last few years have seen a dramatic increase in applied research, aimed primarily in two directions: fish culture and envi ronmental toxicology. Physiological research is of vital importance in both these fields, and basic fish physiology is a necessary base for the applied research. This book is intended for a wide readership among senior undergraduate, postgraduate and research students, as well as uni versity teachers and researchers in zoology, physiology, aqua culture and biology generally.
