The physics of black holes and spacetime singularities is now a well established area of research in gravitation theory. Over recent years researchers have begun to study the internal structure of black holes and spacetime singularities. This book is primarily the proceedings of a workshop devoted to the subject. The chapters are mainly written versions of the talks given at the workshop. However, the authors have written extended introductions to their contributions, so that a reader, well versed in gravitation theory, but unaware of the current research in this subfield, should be able to follow the text Several topics are considered by more than one author, bringing into the text different viewpoints on these topics. As a result, this book is suitable for graduate students who wish to familiarize themselves with the various aspects of the structure of black holes, and for researchers who wish to learn about advances in subfields other than their own. Topics covered include: the nature of thesingularities (both null and spacelike) and the spacetime inside black holes coupled to various matter fields in classical and semiclassical gravity, as well as in alternative gravity theories; the cosmic censorship hypothesis and its connection to black hole interiors; cosmological singularities and their relation with black hole singularities; and black hole entropy and evaporation.

This book discusses the state of the art of the basic theoretical and observational topics related to black hole astrophysics. It covers all the main topics in this wide field, from the theory of accretion disks and formation mechanisms of jet and outflows, to their observed electromagnetic spectrum, and attempts to measure the spin of these objects. Black holes are one of the most fascinating predictions of general relativity and are currently a very hot topic in both physics and astrophysics. In the last five years there have been significant advances in our understanding of these systems, and in the next five years it should become possible to use them to test fundamental physics, in particular to predict the general relativity in the strong field regime. The book is both a reference work for researchers and a textbook for graduate students.

Superconductivity is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense, world-wide, research effort during this time, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such "strongly correlated" solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic. This book presents new and important research from around the world.

This book contains a set of articles based on a session of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held in San Francisco in February, 1974. The reason for the meeting arose from the need to communicate to the largest possible scientific community the dramatic advances which have been made in recent years in the understanding of collapsed objects: neutron stars and black holes. Thanks to an unprecedented resonance between X-ray, y-ray, radio and optical astronomy and important new theoretical developments in relativistic astro physics, a new deep understanding has been acquired of the physical processes oc curring in the late stages of evolution of stars. This knowledge may be one of the greatest conquests of man's understanding of nature in this century. This book aims to give an essential and up-to-date view in this field. The analysis of the physics and astrophysics of neutron stars and black holes is here attacked from both theoretical and experimental points of view. In the experimental field we range from the reviews and catalogues of galactic X-ray sources (R. Gursky and E. Schreier) and pulsars (E. Groth) to the observations of the optical counter part of X-ray sources (P. Boynton) to finally the recently discovered gamma-ray bursts (I. Strong) and pulse astronomy R. B. Partridge).
