Following on from the author’s previous books treating aspects of the cinematic experience, this text reflects on what he has learned about that major innovation in the cultural life of humankind, and suggests to readers and scholars what ideas and concepts they might find useful in their own future studies. As this book argues, the most illuminating perspective for studying the movies is ‘play’, the notion that moving pictures were a major ludenic innovation in the world’s cultural life and became a definite source of human knowledge and discourse. In that way, movies became an important medium of not only popular entertainment, but also popular enlightenment. The perspective and conceptual framework developed in this work will be suggestive to future inquirers interested in understanding the power and persistence of popular movies, helping them towards further insight into this major cultural phenomenon. By using moving pictures to amend the ancient art and craft of storytelling, the future of the medium may persist in the future, if in altered and new modes of popular presentation.

Because developments in informal logic have been based, for the most part, on idealized and abstract models, the tools available for argument analysis are not easily adapted to the needs of everyday argumentation. In this book Douglas Walton proposes a new and practical approach to argument analysis based on his theory that different standards for argument must apply in the case of different types of dialogue. By refining and extending the existing formal classifications of dialogue, Walton shows that each dialogue type, be it inquiry, negotiation, or critical discussion, has its own set of goals. He goes on to demonstrate that an argument can best be evaluated in terms of its contribution, positive or negative, to the goals of the particular dialogue it is meant to further. In this way he illustrates how argument can be brought into the service of many types of dialogue, and thus has valuable uses that go well beyond the mere settling of disputes and differences. By reaching back to the Aristotelian roots of logic as an applied, practical discipline and by formulating a new framework of rationality for evaluating arguments, Douglas Walton restores a much-needed balance to argument analysis. This book complements and extends his Argument Structure: A Pragmatic Theory (University of Toronto Press, 1996).

An inquiry into science education is an exploration into education in a context that is grounded and significant. It is written by a college professor of Physics and Science Education who spent sabbatical year as a full time science teacher in a neighborhood high school in a poor area of New York City. His varied experiences highlight the contrast of what science education is and what it can be. The framework through which the book is written is that science education should be an active, purposeful process which promotes functional understanding and critical thinking. Science learners should be given the opportunity to build an understanding of benchmark principals of science based on their own observations and reasoning. In much the same way, this book explores benchmark principals of science education through real classroom experiences. Standard approaches of teaching and assessment are presented and alternative opportunities are described. Theories and strategies of science education emerge from analysis of classroom observations. Although the focus is on the teaching and learning of science, the subtext is implications of a failing educational system and what can be done about it. The primary intended audience is educators of all capacities, but particularly science teachers. An inquiry into science education integrates critical topics of science education in a contextualized, accessible, and easy to read narrative. The secondary intended audience is non-fiction readers. This book examines educational issues relevant to a general audience from the perspective of a scientist with a focus on inquiry and reasoning. Critical issues are addressed through case histories, some with touches of humor, but all with insight into children and learning.
