Many students begin a law course believing 'real' lawyers write in legalese. Clear and Precise: Writing skills for today's lawyer, 3rd Edition, encourages law students and lawyers to use plain English techniques in the language, structure, content, style and presentation of their writing. The release of the first edition of this manual was one element of a campaign by the Queensland Law Society Plain English Committee to promote clear, precise and effective communication at all levels in the legal community. Thomson Reuters took on the task of publishing a second edition, and ongoing interest in the manual as a teaching aid has led to this revised and updated third edition. New to the third edition: a more detailed discussion on interpretation and definition clauses; a new chapter "Writing for Clients with Literacy Problems"; expanded material on professional letter writing; and new content relating to writing emails. In the last few decades, the application of plain language principles to legislation has been central to debate about improving access to justice. Deborah Clark-Dickson's interest in plain English was stimulated by participating in the Office of the Queensland Parliamentary Counsel's efforts to make legislation more accessible to people generally. Deborah was manager of OQPC's plain English and editorial standards section for four years and a member of the Queensland Law Society Plain English Committee from 1996 until 2004.

Successful Scientific Writing The detailed, practical, step-by-step advice in this user-friendly guide will help students and researchers to communicate their work more effectively through the written word. Covering all aspects of the writing process, this concise, accessible resource is critically acclaimed, well-structured, comprehensive, and entertaining. Self-help exercises and abundant examples from actual typescripts draw on the authors’ extensive experience working both as researchers and with them. Whilst retaining the accessible and pragmatic style of earlier editions, this third edition has been updated and broadened to incorporate such timely topics as guidelines for successful international publication, ethical and legal issues including plagiarism and falsified data, electronic publication, and text-based talks and poster presentations. With advice applicable to many writing contexts in the majority of scientific disciplines, this book is a powerful tool for improving individual skills and an eminently suitable text for classroom courses or seminars. Janice R.Matthews is a writer and educator with a broad background in the biological sciences. She has edited books, technical manuals and hundreds of scientific research papers in the veterinary and biological sciences, both in university settings and for private industry. Robert W. Matthews is a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Georgia and a member of theUGATeaching Academy. An insect behaviour specialist, his scientific publications number over 165 research articles. Preface Times change. Today the need to communicate science information effectively is perhaps more important than it has ever been, but the past decade has witnessed a significant revolution in the manner in which we gather, process, and communicate information. The twin technologies of the Internet and personal computers have changed the way nearly everyone works (and plays). In keeping with the spirit of change, we have extensively revised, updated, and reorganized this third edition. Whether you are a first time author/speaker or a seasoned professional in the biological or medical sciences, we hope you find this step-by-step manual useful. Because our preface message to you in the second edition still rings true for us, we are including it here as well. Enjoy. JRM RWM 2007

This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book. For courses in Technical Communication. Fully centralizes the computer in the technical workplace, presenting how writers use computers throughout their communication process. The networked computer, from smartphone to mainframe, has become the central hub of written, spoken, and visual communication in today’s scientific and technical workplace. Firmly rooted in core rhetorical principles, Technical Communication Strategies for Today presents computers as thinking tools that powerfully influence how we develop, produce, design, and deliver technical documents and presentations. This popular text helps communicators draft and design documents, prepare material for print and web publication, and make oral presentations. Speaking to today's readers, the narrative is “chunked,” so that readable portions of text are combined with graphics and can be “raided” by readers seeking the information they need. Retaining these features, the 3rd Edition of Technical Communication Strategies for Today also marks an important shift to drawing readers’ attention to the centralization of innovation and entrepreneurship in the technical workplace. Revised chapters, new case studies, and new exercises and projects demonstrate that those who know how to write clearly, speak persuasively, and design functional and attractive texts will be the most likely to succeed in today’s innovation-based and entrepreneurial workplace. Technical Communication Strategies for Today , 3rd Edition is also available via Revel™, an interactive learning environment that enables students to read, practice, and study in one continuous experience.

With the growing interest in real-world (nonacademic) writing, critics are suggesting that the composition skills taught in schools may have little to do with the written communication skills students later need in their careers. There is a need for studies that examine writing in nonacademic contexts and that look at writing from a social perspective in order to examine the interrelationships among writing processes, texts, readers, and the functions writing serves within specific organizational settings. This volume is an attempt to increase our understanding of the nature of technical writing within an R&D organization by analyzing the three-match among writer intentions, texts, and reader expectations. Part One traces the interest in real-world writing and explores the differences between writing in an academic versus a real-world setting. Part Two provides a theoretical and conceptual background by discussing traditional and emerging models of technical communication, and by exploring different theories about the nature of science, technology, knowledge, information, language, and progress. Part Three describes the objectives, methodologies, findings, and conclusions of the study which investigated the match among the types of information that researchers (scientists and engineers) intend to include in their technical progress reports, the types of information actually contained in their reports, and the types of information that their supervisor readers expect in these reports.
