With an introduction by Neil Gaiman Before television and radio, before penny paperbacks and mass literacy, people would gather on porches, on the steps outside their homes, and tell stories. The storytellers knew their craft and bewitched listeners would sit and listen long into the night as moths flitted around overhead. The Moth is a non-profit group that is trying to recapture this lost art, helping storytellers - old hands and novices alike - hone their stories before playing to packed crowds at sold-out live events. The very best of these stories are collected here: whether it's Bill Clinton's hell-raising press secretary or a leading geneticist with a family secret; a doctor whisked away by nuns to Mother Teresa's bedside or a film director saving her father's Chinatown store from money-grabbing developers; the Sultan of Brunei's concubine or a friend of Hemingway's who accidentally talks himself into a role as a substitute bullfighter, these eccentric, pitch-perfect stories - all, amazingly, true - range from the poignant to the downright hilarious.

his is a true story about the journey of autism and my three sons. My eldest is now 20, the second eldest is 18, and my baby is 17. Back when my children were born, people were not too familiar with autism and some had never heard of it. The title From a Moth to a Butterfly emphasizes that my boys are not what labels them. They should not have to fit into the norm of society, but should be accepted for who they are. The moth represents how some perceive others with an invisible disability, while the butterfly is how I see my boys. They are beautiful, unique individual people, who will flourish like anyone else when given love and understanding. When my lads were babies, I wrote my feelings in my diary. At the time, it was just to vent frustration, plus if you're asked to log behaviors, it saves time if you've already begun doing this. Last year my sons asked what it was like when they were young. I gave them my written notes, which they thought funny in parts and sad in others. They urged me to publish so others could find it helpful with their own challenges. This book is based on true events that occurred throughout my sons' lives. I've also written some deep poetry. My two younger sons, Michael and William, helped with the initial synopsis for the book. Michael wrote, "This is the story of how a mother ensures the best lives for her three sons is ultimately met

Dozakhnama: Conversations in Hell is an extraordinary novel, a biography of Manto and Ghalib and a history of Indian culture rolled into one. Exhumed from dust, Manto’s unpublished novel surfaces in Lucknow. Is it real or is it a fake? In this dastan, Manto and Ghalib converse, entwining their lives in shared dreams. The result is an intellectual journey that takes us into the people and events that shape us as a culture. As one writer describes it, ‘I discovered Rabisankar Bal like a torch in the darkness of the history of this subcontinent. This is the real story of two centuries of our own country.’ Rabisankar Bal’s audacious novel, told by reflections in a mirror and forged in the fires of hell, is both an oral tale and a shield against oblivion. An echo of distant screams. Inscribed by the devil’s quill, Dozakhnama is an outstanding performance of subterranean memory.

Insects as a whole are preeminently creatures of the land and the air. This is shown not only by the possession of wings by a vast majority of the class, but by the mode of breathing to which reference has already been made (p. 2), a system of branching air-tubes carrying atmospheric air with its combustion-supporting oxygen to all the insect's tissues. The air gains access to these tubes through a number of paired air-holes or spiracles, arranged segmentally in series. It is of great interest to find that, nevertheless, a number of insects spend much of their time under water. This is true of not a few in the perfect winged state, as for example aquatic beetles and water-bugs ('boatmen' and 'scorpions') which have some way of protecting their spiracles when submerged, and, possessing usually the power of flight, can pass on occasion from pond or stream to upper air. .....

This book is a radical reappraisal of the Christian life-style. It returns to the Bible as the most realistic template for practical Christian living. It confronts many of the practices that stifle Christian effectiveness, unlocking the small print of "how to" live a simple, consistent Christian life. God's single provision of "Jesus only in all things" is shown to be both practical and possible, every chapter helping us to unclutter our lives and accomplish the destiny God planned for us from the beginning of time. This book "Settles the unsettled, and unsettles the settled."
