There is an increasing hunger among Catholics to study the Bible in depth and in a way that integrates Scripture with Catholic doctrine, worship, and daily life. In October 2008, a meeting of the world Synod of Bishops scheduled by Pope Benedict XVI will focus on "The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church." Coinciding with that meeting is the launch of the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (CCSS), a series that responds to the desire of Catholics to access the living Word of God. The Gospel of Mark is the first of seventeen volumes, which will cover the entire New Testament. Written by trusted Catholic biblical scholars, these commentaries interpret Scripture in the light of Catholic tradition. Accessibly written yet substantive, the CCSS fills a gap in the available literature by offering commentaries that cover more than brief study guides but are less daunting than scholarly commentaries.

The Bible is central to our faith as Catholics. But approaching such a large and complex collection of writings that span thousands of years is intimidating for most of us. We need a guide, a compass to set us off on the right course so that our time spent studying the Scriptures is a time spent encountering the living God. The Bible Compass provides readers with the tools to study the Word of God with confidence and purpose. This book demonstrates how to read the Bible within the living Tradition of the Catholic Church, and it addresses all the common questions about the Bible including: Where did the Bible come from? Why is the Bible so important? Is the Bible really inspired by God? Why do Catholic Bibles have more books than Protestant Bibles? Do I have to take the Bible literally? How do I know if I am interpreting the Bible correctly? Why do we need Tradition and the Magisterium to understand Scripture? What are the four senses of Scripture? Why are there different translations of the Bible Which is best? How can archeology, history and geography enrich our study of Scripture? What are the Dead Sea Scrolls? How should we as Catholics interpret Scripture? What is lectio divina? What about Gnostic gospels and other non-biblical books? As Catholics we are called to have an intimate knowledge of Jesus Christ and the Church as revealed in the Scriptures. Reading the Bible with the proper tools and in the appropriate context will help you grow in your love for the Faith and in your relationship with Jesus Christ himself, who is “the Word made Flesh,” (John 1:1).

Thomas Aquinas (1224/25–1274) wrote commentaries on the four Gospels by stringing together quotations from the works of Greek and Latin Church Fathers and of later Church writers. Thus a catena (chain) was created, the best-known of all catenae. In the 14th century it was translated into German. Two of the universally treasured magnificent manuscripts with the commentaries on Mark and Luke were considered lost in the last year of the Second World War, but in 1982 they were discovered in Toruń. The present volume contains the edition of the Catena aurea super Lucam, the commentary on Luke.

The story of the creation of The Saint Johns Biblethe first commissioned, handwritten Bible in five hundred years and the first Bible of this magnitude written in English using a contemporary translationhas been told elsewhere. In Word and Image, Fr. Michael Patella focuses not on how it was made but on how, now that it is finished, it can be read, viewed, and interpreted. Patella considers the centuries-long tradition of illuminated Bibles and also the fascinating ways this Bible reflects third-millennium concerns. He seeks to rekindle interest in sacred art by allowing The Saint John's Bible to teach its readers and viewers how to work with text and image. As an accomplished Scripture scholar, a monk of the abbey that commissioned the Bible, and the chair of the Committee on Illumination and Text that provided the vision to the artists who created it, Patella may be the only one who could write this book with such insight, expertise, and love.
