Excerpt from Geschichte der Deutschen in Syracuse und Onondaga County: Nebst Kurzen Biographien von Beamten und Hervorragenden Buergern Hen the leaves of autumn are falliug in October next, Syracuse W will celebrate her fiftieth anniversary as a city, and it might 'be said that during the past three decades the history of the German American people has been the history of Syracuse, so closely in touch have these people been with the progress and development of our beauti ful city. It is a conservative opinion to state that at least one person out of every five of our 12 inhabitants is of German origin. The sous and daughtei*s of the Fatherland in Syracuse are a liberty loving people. They left their country in order that they might be freed from the re strictions of a monarchical system of government which, among other op pressive forms, requires every man to serve in the army in order that royalty may be preserved. The people who rebelled against tyranny and who believed in liberty of thought were naturally the best of their peo ple. They were attracted to the free soil of America and they have done their share in making our nation so great and powerful. They have made two blades of grass grow where one grew before. The golden corn of Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and the great West waves over millions of farms owned by sturdy German farmers. They have made the granary of our country.
