Swan Song: The Great Magical Unknowing Elegance emerged from a desire to write an inside story, an autobiography of the dream, muse and odd vision that never quite lets go of our memory. These inner senses from childhood to old age wanted a book, in fact demanded one. I recalled a story about an old, wisdom-woman in Ireland who each morning chose one of her lifetime journals, let it fall open to any page, and then spent her rocking chair days remembering that single day out of her years. Climbing a ladder, I pulled down twenty-five years of dated journals, stacked them on a wooden table, and proceeded to draw out memorable events that I used for Book One of Swan Song, created in New York City. It was becoming a novel with actual events that I had lived. However, something totally mysterious occurred. I began to experience the strangest dreams of my life. Several times a week I would find myself in Medieval Galway, Ireland, in a poor tenement or slum in the loft of Brian. I was telling him that he and his love must leave because bad times were coming. Brian saw me, wasnt afraid, believed my words and made plans for himself and his love, Daniela, to immigrate to New York. I dont want to tell readers anything else about the dreams or how they took over the novel and my life as I flew from JFK to Galway to dream the story on location. I have known for a long time that the inner senses control our outer, physical life. Not the other way around. We are taught that what happens during our awake days may become dreams. Wrong. Our dreams come first and regulate our physical days. Many years ago I read a few of Jane Roberts, Seth books. Now, in the midst of Swan Song, his ideas flowered again. Thus, the autobiography, fiction and research novel took on a whole new life and my inside story truly became The Great Magical Unknowing Elegance.

'Brilliantly captures Capote’s acid wit and his dramatic downfall.' The Times BOOKS OF THE YEAR 'A dazzlingly assured first novel... This clever book, with the moreish astringency of a negroni, is a perfect summer cocktail.' - Sunday Times 'A whirlwind of a first novel. There is great pathos in the Swans’ woundings and in their inevitable decline. And the character of Truman himself shimmers through the novel in a wonderful blaze of eccentricity and excess. Outstanding.' – Rose Tremain ___________________________ They told him everything. He told everyone else. Over countless martini-soaked Manhattan lunches, they shared their deepest secrets and greatest fears. On exclusive yachts sailing the Mediterranean, on private jets streaming towards Jamaica, on Yucatán beaches in secluded bays, they gossiped about sex, power, money, love and fame. They never imagined he would betray them so absolutely. In the autumn of 1975, after two decades of intimate friendships, Truman Capote detonated a literary grenade, forever rupturing the elite circle he’d worked so hard to infiltrate. Why did he do it, knowing what he stood to lose? Was it to punish them? To make them pay for their manners, money and celebrated names? Or did he simply refuse to believe that they could ever stop loving him? Whatever the motive, one thing remains indisputable: nine years after achieving wild success with In Cold Blood, Capote committed an act of professional and social suicide with his most lethal of weapons . . . Words. A dazzling debut about the line between gossip and slander, self-creation and self-preservation, SWAN SONG is the tragic story of the literary icon of his age and the beautiful, wealthy, vulnerable women he called his Swans. ‘Writers write. And one can’t be surprised if they write what they know.’ ______________________________ 'A completely fascinating novel and a marvellously skilful re-imagining of real people, times and places. Outstanding.' – William Boyd 'Scandalous, frenetic, amusing and tragic.' – Daily Mail 'Our generation’s The Secret History' – Pendora 'Brilliantly written, deeply researched, funny, sharp and moving.' – Kate Williams, bestselling author of Josephine

In the first critical study wholly devoted to Joseph Conrad's use of techniques associated with the literary tradition of romance, Katherine Isobel Baxter argues that Conrad's engagement with the genre invigorated his work throughout his career. Exploring the ways in which Conrad borrows from, alludes to, and subverts the tropes of romance, Baxter suggests that Conrad's ambivalent relationship with popular forms like the adventure novel is revealed in the way he uses romance conventions to disrupt narrative expectations and make visible ethical problems with Europe's colonial project. Baxter examines not only familiar novels like Lord Jim but also less-studied works such as Romance and The Rover, using Robert Miles's model of the 'philosophical romance' to show that for Conrad, romance is also philosophically engaged with issues of ideology. Her study enables a new appreciation of the ways in which Conrad continued to experiment, even in his later fiction, and of the ethical import of that aesthetic experimentation.

HELLO. Welcome to my cottage. And yes, do please come in and make yourself comfortable. So begins this collection of intimate essays by a man, who says hes in his 90s and wanting to leave a loving farewell to humankind. Hes not quite one of us, he claims, and wants to offer us a special parting gift. His gift will be accepted by some, rejected by others, come as a source of comfort or, quite possibly, outrage. Determined to keep his last days for himself, he insists on remaining anonymous. Says the writers godson and editor, Barry Head: Like many of you who will read Swansong, Im not sure what to make of it. I found it challenging and provocative, but while disagreeing with my godfather about many things, I found what he says always beguiling in its friendly, playful, non-judgmental tone. Very quirky. So quirky, in fact, that I felt it deserved publicationparticularly as it was written as a legacy for all of us. BARRY HEAD is a painter and writer, spending most of the year in Oaxaca, Mexico. Hull, autumn 2005 and private investigator Leo Rivers finds himself at the overheated heart of an inquiry into the savage killing of several young women. Approached by the mother of the chief suspect, he soon discovers not only that this suspect is not involved in the killings, but that several hitherto unconsidered and scarcely credible connections link the murders to a single perpetrator. In pursuing his case, Rivers has to contend with an ambitious, career-minded Chief of Police, who will stop at nothing to make a name for himself, sacrificing not only Rivers but also his own colleagues along the way. Set against a backdrop of the Humber and the long and violent destruction of Hull's once-cherished fishing industry, Robert Edric reveals a world of exploitation and ambition; a world of old men who burnish their festering grievances and vanities; and a world of long-suppressed but finally uncontainable brutality, in this final volume of a trilogy of outstanding and acclaimed contemporary noir.

Anita Armstrong had once been a notable bestseller. But that was before the war, before her marriage, and before her impulse to write died with her husband. Now, as elderly widowed Mrs. Grosshouse, living peacefully and unknown in Devon, Anita begins a new novel, anxiously, hopefully feeling her way and finding it grow. Her literary agent and former publisher are politely cautious, but friends are encouraging and she manages to enlist the services of a girl called Judy to do the typing. Trouble only starts when Judy and her boyfriend Chris appear to be taking much more impatient interest in the progress of Anita’s book than its author is even aware of.
