Semantic Theory in Classical and Medieval India

Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana is a massive work on semantic theory written in India in the 17th century. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta belonged to the tradition of Sanskrit grammar and in this work he consolidated the philosophy of language developed in the Paninian tradition of Sanskrit grammar. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work takes account of the philosophical debate which occurred in classical and medieval India among the philosophers and grammarians from about 500 B.C. to the 17th century A.D. Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's work primarily represents this debate between the traditions of Sanskrit grammar, Mi&mdotu;amsa, and Nyaya-Vaisesika. It discusses ontological, epistemological, and exegetical issues concerning the notion of meaning as it relates to the various components of language. The present book is a heavily annotated translation of the Namartha-nirnaya section of Kaun&ddotu;abhatta's Vaiyakarana-bhusana, with an extensive introduction. While there are several books that discuss Indian semantic theories in general terms, this book belongs to a small class of intensive, focused studies of densely written philosophical texts which examines each argument in its historical and philosophical context. It is of interest to all students of philosophy of language in general, and to students of Indian philosophy in particular.

The interface between the individual and what constitutes his world is formed by a nexus of cosmic forces of graded subtlety. Understanding these forces and energies opens up a whole field of tangibly realizable possibilities. The book attempts to ignite a spark that illuminates the fact that the spiritual goal cannot be attained by suppression or a denial of your desires and passions. That we need to rise above violent labelling of power, desire, and money as evil and identify the real evil within as a lack of awareness of the energy field and its role as a bridge between matter and spirit. The book borrows on the quotations of ancient and modern physicists, metaphysicists, sages, philosophers, and poets and blends their words with some personal reflections based on experience. The intent at all times being to share perspectives that embrace the spiritual potential in material and the material possibilities of the spiritual journey. The book celebrates the oneness of spirit and matter through these quotes, which have been compartmentalized into chapters that inform, educate, or gently hint at this oneness and harmony, which holds the disparate cosmic components together as a seamless whole.

All the worlds and countless life-forms that evolve over countless cycles of birth and death are merely a Lila or a Divine-Sport for the Lord. One needs to consciously play the game to truly understand the nature of it to realize the truth that one needs to get liberation from the endless cycle of pain and grief.Accoding to Patanjalis Yoga Sutras Yoga is keeping the mind in an unchanged tranquil-state,for though man is programmed to function and is normally governed by animal instincts sourced by the reptilian or animal brain centred in the medula oblangata,by transcending the lower-mind,the Divine comes into play.Through simple Yogic-techniques like breath-awareness one can realize that as his breathing pattern slows down and ultimately stops in the state of Kevala kumbaka or perfect retention of breath when the mind too stops functioning, his true Self that is Divine takes over and he is beyond the confines of Space and Time and can thus turn eternally young and Total Recall become possible. The Lord Jesus Christ has said in the Holy Bible that the eternal plan is to turn entire mankind Perfect and into the image of himself who is in the exact image of the Father and the Rama Gita says that thoughtless-mind is Brahman - God and Thirumoolar says that the individual soul and the infinite are not different, one thus needs to realize it!

The Archetypal Imagination

Author: James Hollis,David H. Rosen

ISBN: 9781585442683

Category: Psychology

Page: 135

Also available in an open-access, full-text edition at "What we wish to know, and most desire, remains unknowable and lies beyond our grasp." With these words, James Hollis leads readers to consider the nature of our human need for meaning in life and for connection to a world less limiting than our own. In The Archetypal Imagination, Hollis offers a lyrical Jungian appreciation of the archetypal imagination. He argues that without the human mind's ability to form energy-filled images that link us to worlds beyond our rational and emotional capacities, we would have neither culture nor spirituality. Drawing upon the work of poets and philosophers, Hollis shows the importance of depth experience, meaning, and connection to an "other" world. Just as humans have instincts for biological survival and social interaction, we have instincts for spiritual connection as well. Just as our physical and social needs seek satisfaction, so the spiritual instincts of the human animal are expressed in images we form to evoke an emotional or spiritual response, as in our dreams, myths, and religious traditions. The author draws upon the work of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies to elucidate the archetypal imagination in literary forms. To underscore the importance of incarnating depth experience, he also examines a series of paintings by Nancy Witt. With the power of the archetypal imagination available to all of us, we are invited to summon courage to take on the world anew, to relinquish outmoded identities and defenses, and to risk a radical re-imagining of the larger possibilities of the world and of the self.

Draw a Straight Line and Follow It

The Music and Mysticism of La Monte Young

Recognized as the patriarch of the minimalist movement-Brian Eno once called him "the daddy of us all"--La Monte Young remains an enigma within the music world, one of the most important and yet most elusive composers of the late twentieth century. Early in his career Young almost completely eschewed the conventional musical institutions of publishers, record labels, and venues, in order to create compositions completely unfettered by commercial concerns. Yet at the same time he exercised profound influence on such varied figures as Terry Riley, Cornelius Cardew, Andy Warhol, Yoko Ono, David Lang, The Velvet Underground, and entire branches of electronica and drone music. For half a century, he and his partner and collaborator, Marian Zazeela, have worked in near-seclusion in their Tribeca loft, creating works that explore the furthest extremes of conceptual audacity, technical sophistication, acoustical complexity, and overt spirituality. Draw A Straight Line and Follow It: The Music and Mysticism of La Monte Young stands as the first narrative study to examine Young's life and work in detail. The book is a culmination of a decade of research, during which author Jeremy Grimshaw gained rare access to the composer and his archives. Loosely structured upon the chronology of the composer's career, the book takes a multi-disciplinary approach that combines biography, musicology, ethnomusicology, and music analysis, and illuminates such seemingly disparate aspects of Young's work as integral serialism and indeterminacy, Mormon esoterica and Vedic mysticism, and psychedelia and psychoacoustics. Draw A Straight Line and Follow It is a long-awaited, in-depth look at one of America's most fascinating musical figures.

The remarkable essays in this volume were written for the expressed purpose of helping both the newcomer to spiritual thinking as well as the skilled practitioner to see the everyday objects - from the wind and ships to deserts and lakes - and subjects - from dogs and ravens to dolphins and whales - surrounding us as concrete embodiments and living symbols of the fundamental spiritual Essence from which everything has evolved. These universal symbols are not just accidental mental constructs but are living realities that not only point to spiritual dimensions far beyond themselves but profoundly embody those spiritual realities. Learning to see the world around us afresh in the light of its spiritual dimension reorients us to taking up again the age-old task of treading the Path and aids us in activating our higher spiritual capacities which, when awakened, shed the pristine light of universal Theosophy on the path of spiritual self-regeneration in the service of humanity. The 28 wide-ranging articles in this volume span a wide spectrum of human thought: from the Tetraktys to the Cross, from the Altar to the Mirror, from the Pentagram to the Dodecahedron, from the Dog to the Dwarf, from the Heart to the Fool; indeed, from Shamballa to Paradise. These essays reveal the fundamental religious, philosophical, and scientific aspects to the most mundane and most refined realities of our common, everyday world. Both the serious reflection upon and casual reading of these essays is a joyous expedition through the all-too-common truncated perceptions we have of our world to a higher level of awareness of the myriad ways in which the life of the universal Spirit is made manifest.
