One of the first champions of the positive effects of gaming reveals the dark side of today's digital and social media Today's schools are eager to use the latest technology in the classroom, but rather than improving learning, the new e-media can just as easily narrow students' horizons. Education innovator James Paul Gee first documented the educational benefits of gaming a decade ago in his classic What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy. Now, with digital and social media at the center of modern life, he issues an important warning that groundbreaking new technologies, far from revolutionizing schooling, can stymie the next generation's ability to resolve deep global challenges. The solution-and perhaps our children's future-lies in what Gee calls synchronized intelligence, a way of organizing people and their digital tools to solve problems, produce knowledge, and allow people to count and contribute. Gee explores important strategies and tools for today's parents, educators, and policy makers, including virtual worlds, artificial tutors, and ways to create collective intelligence where everyday people can solve hard problems. By harnessing the power of human creativity with interactional and technological sophistication we can finally overcome the limitations of today's failing educational system and solve problems in our high-risk global world. The Anti-Education Era is a powerful and important call to reshape digital learning, engage children in a meaningful educational experience, and bridge inequality.

The rise of digital media has been widely regarded as transforming the nature of our social experience in the twenty-first century. The speed with which new forms of connectivity and communication are being incorporated into our everyday lives often gives us little time to stop and consider the social implications of those practices. Nonetheless, it is critically important that we do so, and this sociological introduction to the field of digital technologies is intended to enable a deeper understanding of their prominent role in everyday life. The fundamental theoretical and ethical debates on the sociology of the digital media are presented in accessible summaries, ranging from economy and technology to criminology and sexuality. Key theoretical paradigms are explored through a broad range of contemporary social phenomena – from social networking and virtual lives to the rise of cybercrime and identity theft, from the utopian ideals of virtual democracy to the Orwellian nightmare of the surveillance society, from the free software movement to the implications of online shopping. As an entry-level pathway for students in sociology, media, communications and cultural studies, the aim of this work is to situate the rise of digital media within the context of a complex and rapidly changing world.

Today, virtual worlds abound, avatars are every day occurrences, and video games are yesterday’s news. But today’s games are not just a pastime for millions – they are also a technological focal point for new forms of learning. James Paul Gee and Elisabeth Hayes are leading researchers in the field of gaming, and here they argue that women gamers—a group too often marginalized—are at the forefront of today’s online learning world. By utilizing the tools of gaming in ways never before imagined - actively engaging in game design, writing fan fiction, and organizing themselves into collaborative learning communities - women of all ages acquire the tools to successfully navigate the complex social, cultural , and economic problems of the 21st century. Women are leading the way to a new understanding of online learning techniques, from cultural production to learning communities to technical proficiency in the latest software. This book draws on case studies about women who “play” the Sims, the best selling game in history, to argue for a new general theory of learning for the 21st Century.

Starting with the publication of their seminal bestseller, Future Shock, Alvin and Heidi Toffler have given millions of readers new ways to think about personal life in today’s high-speed world with its constantly changing, seemingly random impacts on our businesses, governments, families and daily lives. Now, writing with the same rare grasp and clarity that made their earlier books classics, the Tofflers turn their attention to the revolution in wealth now sweeping the planet. And once again, they provide a penetrating, coherent way to make sense of the seemingly senseless. Revolutionary Wealth is about how tomorrow’s wealth will be created, and who will get it and how. But twenty-first-century wealth, according to the Tofflers, is not just about money, and cannot be understood in terms of industrial-age economics. Thus they write here about everything from education and child rearing to Hollywood and China, from everyday truth and misconceptions to what they call our “third job”—the unnoticed work we do without pay for some of the biggest corporations in our country. They show the hidden connections between extreme sports, chocolate chip cookies, Linux software and the “surplus complexity” in our lives as society wobbles back and forth between depressing decadence and a hopeful post-decadence. In their earlier work, the Tofflers coined the word “prosumer” for people who consume what they themselves produce. In Revolutionary Wealth they expand the concept to reveal how many of our activities—whether parenting or volunteering, blogging, painting our house, improving our diet, organizing a neighborhood council or even “mashing” music—pump “free lunch” from the “hidden” non-money economy into the money economy that economists track. Prosuming, they forecast, is about to explode and compel radical changes in the way we measure, make and manipulate wealth. Blazing with fresh ideas, Revolutionary Wealth provides readers with powerful new tools for thinking about—and preparing for—their future. From the Hardcover edition.

The most essential insight that Buddhism offers is that all our individual suffering arises from three and only three sources, known in Buddhism as the three poisons: greed, ill-will, and delusion. In The Great Awakening, scholar and Zen teacher David Loy examines how these three poisons, embodied in society's institutions, lie at the root of all social maladies as well. The teachings of Buddhism present a way that the individual can counteract these to alleviate personal suffering, and in the The Great Awakening Loy boldly examines how these teachings can be applied to institutions and even whole cultures for the alleviation of suffering on a collective level. This book will help both Buddhists and non-Buddhists to realize the social importance of Buddhist teachings, while providing a theoretical framework for socially engaged members of society to apply their spiritual principles to collective social issues. The Great Awakening shows how Buddhism can help our postmodern world develop liberative possibilities otherwise obscured by the anti-religious bias of so much contemporary social theory.

When we think we learned something new, we are quite proud of it. But it wears off quickly for an unknown reason. So, what is wrong with what we do? When you start to think about the things you learn, and what the reason or purpose actually is, then you have to wonder sometimes is it really something new we just learned. Because having in mind to learn something new can be quite exhausting at times. Maybe we have to start to think about this in a different way, and take a different approach in discovering new things. It is like a treasure hunt, imagine that we are all pirates looking for an adventure or treasures. Obviously our life is about searching for something, but most of the time we dont even know what we are looking for. We do this quite instinctively, maybe we are preprogrammed in a way and we are not aware of it. But when you find out who we are, then everything seams to make sense. Our entire world (Universe) stands on myth and mythology (including our history), making us wonder if it is real. Lets look at life in a different way. Learn more about our history, maybe we can learn from old things our ancestors already new, and then set that aside and try to find your own way. You most certainly will see things with different eyes. This is what our life is all about, it is a soul search where the experience we have along the way is the reward (treasure). In Australia the Aboriginal people are most likely a candidate for such an idea. They go on a regular Walkabout, which literately means looking for something. They might find something which can be worth bringing home as an idea for which the whole community can benefit from. This is what a walkabout is all about, looking for something which is useful, and has a value in the community. After all we are constantly occupied by making a living or providing for our needs. The westerners actually practice the same thing, we call them the Backpackers. People who go and see other parts of the world, enjoy the diversity and beauty of nature, as well as other cultures and traditions. Yes, we can learn something old, have a lot of fun and it can be quite rewarding. This book was taking shape, based on an ironic thought; How much knowledge there is, and we know so little. How come we know so little? We know all the most complicated things there can be, but we know very little of what life is about. What is the cause for all things? How does it all work? What is the reason? And last but not least; How do we fit into everything? Is it possible that we have taken valuable information from ancient Greek knowledge, but ignored one of their most important practices the philosophy of all things. Has everything to us become scientific or important because sciences can explain the real world. Have we forgotten that this real world we live in comes from a mystical source (something unseen). Something we call a different dimension because we cant possibly explain it. It is such an exotic source, that it would take a lot of ancient knowledge to discover the truth. Do you want to discover the truth? This book might have some answers.

This book examines the subject that has haunted mankind since its origins - war. Beginning with an analysis of warfare in the past, it offers insights into today's conflicts - and a portrait of the future face of battle. Its premise is that the forms of war follow forms of economic activity. In pre-industrial agrarian societies, men fought hand-to-hand. With the age of mass production came mass destruction - the savage bombing sorties of World War II and Vietnam, as well as the omnipresent threat of nuclear annihilation. The smart bombs of the Gulf conflict, it warns, are precursors of what war could become as the information age unfolds: a battlefield dominated by intelligent weapons systems, from tiny, antlike robots that crawl into an adversary's headquarters to autonomous arms that, once programmed, decide when, and towards whom, they fire. The authors show how changes in the media business and the global economy are blurring the distinction between news and psychological warfare, and they call for bloodless battle (anti-war) as a new approach to world peace.

Every one of us is unique. With recent advances in technology, we now know that that statement is more true that ever: we are each individuals, right down to a molecular level — a one-of-a-kind combination of genes, proteins, and metabolism. So why does healthcare still take a one-size-fits-all approach? The same methods are used on everyone to diagnose illness, and the same drugs are used to treat it — despite the fact that those methods and treatments are not effective for everyone and are even harmful for some. Shouldn’t our medicine be tailored to our differences? The Personalized Medicine Revolution explores recent advances in genomics, the study of the human genome — as well as its cousins proteomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, and the like — and explains how technology is even now changing the way medicine is delivered. Along the way, it takes the reader through the five critical healthcare areas that will be transformed most radically by personalized medicine — prediction, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring — and examines the practical and ethical issues involved. Finally, it details how readers can use personalized medicine to take charge of their own health and build a stronger and safer medical system.

The Turkish economy is very dynamic and growing at phenomenal speeds. For instance, Turkey’s first quarter GDP growth rate was 11 percent in 2011. This growth brings its own risks and benefits. The lessons learned from surviving and thriving in such an environment can be applied to supply chains in any country. Packed with interesting and timely examples from industries such as automotive, airline, and manufacturing, Risk Intelligent Supply Chains: How Leading Turkish Companies Thrive in the Age of Fragility presents strategic insights from various leading Turkish companies regarding their management of supply chain risks. Çağrı Haksöz brings the risk intelligent supply chain (RISC) concept to life for the first time. It answers the question of how to become a risk intelligent supply chain. He proposes the I-Quartet Model with four essential roles "Integrator, Inquirer, Improviser, and Ingenious," that any supply chain network must play to become risk intelligent. The book also presents never-before-published cases and practices of leading Turkish companies that thrive globally in the age of fragility with their supply chain risk intelligence. While providing real-life examples, the book also shares insights obtained in various scientific disciplines. It provides not only an industry focus but also details numerous industry approaches, analyzing their similarities and differences in a manner that allows each industry to learn from the other.

You will never look at the world in the same way after reading As the Future Catches You. Juan Enriquez puts you face to face with a series of unprecedented political, ethical, economic, and financial issues, dramatically demonstrating the cascading impact of the genetic, digital, and knowledge revolutions on your life. Genetics will be the dominant language of this century. Those who can “speak it” will acquire direct and deliberate control over all forms of life. But most countries and individuals remain illiterate in what is rapidly becoming the greatest single driver of the global economy. Wealth will be more concentrated and those with knowledge to sell–both countries and individuals–will be the winners. Consider what will happen when: • Your genetic code can be digitally imprinted on an ID card and your insurance company and employer see that you are genetically disposed to, say, heart disease. • Pharmaceutical products are developed so that you can eat genetically modified broccoli to protect yourself from cancer. • Cloning will be as common as in vitro fertilization and scientists can influence the genetic design not only of other species but of your own children. • Creating wealth no longer requires many hands. Lone individuals are giving birth to entire new industries that rapidly become bigger than the economies of most countries on earth, but create very few jobs. As the Future Catches You resembles no other book. A typical page may contain just a few dozen words. But each seemingly discrete fact is like a chip in an intellectual mosaic that reveals its meaning and beauty only as you step back and see the big picture. Juan Enriquez is like the best teacher you ever had, one who helps you to see something in a new light and makes you say, “Now I get it!” Juan Enriquez’s main point is that technology is not kind, it does not say “please,” but slams into existing systems and destroys them while creating new ones. Countries and individuals can either surf new and powerful waves of change–or get crushed trying to stop them. The future is catching us all. Let it catch you with your eyes wide open.
