Baptism is the entry into Christian life. In the early Church it was often administered to adults, who were expected to follow a course of instruction before and after baptism. In this book two bishops, Cyril of Jerusalem and Augustine of Hippo use the rites of baptism to explain the beliefs and way of life of Christians. Tertullian, a layman and lawyer, deals with the controversies that surrounded baptism in his day.

Consultant eye surgeon, Eric Arnott, was one of the original pioneers of small-incision surgery. He was the first to perform modern Phaco surgery in Europe and designed lens implants that have restored the sight to millions of patients. The word autobiography is simply insufficient to describe this book, which is a remarkable testament to the life, works and marriage of a remarkable man. The book details the original invention of the lens implant by Harold Ridley, who Eric worked with in his early years of medical training. It goes on to follow the development of small-incision Phaco surgery, instigated by Charlie Kelman, and the disinterest and contempt held by the peers of these ophthalmologic pioneers. The author describes every advance in this field of ophthalmology in fascinating detail. The importance to Eric of religion, spirituality, family life and helping others less fortunate than himself is reinforced in this enthralling and at times very amusing read. Arnott draws you into his narrative, rousing thoughts of disbelief as you are compelled to continue reading, each new chapter and event in his life proving as fascinating as the last. Entertaining and illuminating, A New Beginning in Sight provides a detailed history of ophthalmology and is essential reading for ophthalmologists, other specialists and non-specialists alike.

A Textual Frame Analysis of the Political Campaign Film

Author: Joanne Morreale

This book is a postmodern analysis of Ronald Reagan's 1984 film, A New Beginning, which marked the coming-of-age of the televisual political campaign film. The film was a landmark in the art of political filmmaking. Its thesis proclaimed a resurgence of American pride, patriotism, and prosperity under the leadership of Ronald Reagan. A New Beginning was unprecedented for a number of reasons: it replaced the traditional nominating speech for the candidate at the Republican National Convention; its form was a hybrid documentary and advertisement; it illustrated the use of televisual rebirth rhetoric to gain public support for a political ideology; and, most importantly, the masterful project documented a shift from verbal to visual rhetoric in American presidential campaigning. The author examines the film as a cultural text and as an effective political tool. Framing, ideology, myth, and visual cliché are analytic tools used to deconstruct the film; the method combines rhetorical theory with communication theory and semiotically-based theories of film and television. Morreale gives insight into the increasingly prevalent use of television to create a political reality.

In A New Beginning, Lee Joel Tiru courageously opens his heart and mind to the emotional and physical challenges he faced as a morbidly obese youngster and teenager. While it is no longer uncommon for one to admit to being fat, it is quite rare for one to lay oneself open, so the reader can sense his heartache and desperation and share equally in his joys and triumphs. Lee Tiru knows whereof he speaks; he offers a textbook example of how to set a course for changing ones life and for reaching and exceeding powerful life goals. He does not beat the reader perhaps equally obese as he once was over the head to change, but lays out reasonable challenges nonetheless to leave the reader with hope that there is life beyond misery. His words are applicable to any of lifes difficulties: set a goal and persevere, always mindful of victory.

I have found that writing was my therapy to ease the pain or confusion or even joy that I couldnt express to others. I closed myself to others about my feelings for a very long time, so writing was my escape to avoid being judged. The paper never judged me, so I vented as much as I could. I found my joy in writing in middle school, but I decided to document my poems around my freshman year of high school. This book is of about ten years of my personal feelings, experiences or just inspiration. For the first time Im allowing people to come into my personal world, exposing myself in a way Ive never thought I ever would.

Evolutionary Psychiatry was first published in 1996, the second edition followed in 2000. This ground breaking book challenged the medical model which supplied few effective answers to long-standing conundrums. A comprehensive introduction to the science of Darwinian Psychiatry, the second edition included important fresh material on a number of disorders, along with a chapter on research. Anthony Stevens and John Price argue that psychiatric symptoms are manifestations of ancient adaptive strategies which are no longer necessarily appropriate but which can best be understood and treated in an evolutionary and developmental context. Particularly important are the theories Stevens and Price propose to account for the worldwide existence of mood disorders and schizophrenia, as well as offering solutions for such puzzles as paedophilia, sado-masochism and the function of dreams. Readily accessible to both the specialist and non-specialist reader, Evolutionary Psychiatry describes in detail the disorders and conditions commonly encountered in psychiatric practice and shows how evolutionary theory can account for their biological origins and functional nature.? This Classic Edition of the book includes a new preface by Anthony Stevens and a foreword by Paul Gilbert.

Chapter 1 Now fully grown the big fish, twelve hundred pounds and thirteen feet long, was homing in on a faint flutter of something in distress near the shoreline. The shark couldn't tell how big it was, or what it was, just that the struggling vibrations usually meant food usually meant food. As it moved in closer, it felt more violet motions in the target area and sped up. It could now taste the fish and blood in the water column as it passed through it, and saw the silhouette on the surface. One mighty surge of its tail, and it was on the unsuspecting victim, its teeth lined jaws engulfing all. Then it was gone, as quick and quietly as it had come, sliding back into the depths of the lake.
