Consultant eye surgeon, Eric Arnott, was one of the original pioneers of small-incision surgery. He was the first to perform modern Phaco surgery in Europe and designed lens implants that have restored the sight to millions of patients. The word autobiography is simply insufficient to describe this book, which is a remarkable testament to the life, works and marriage of a remarkable man. The book details the original invention of the lens implant by Harold Ridley, who Eric worked with in his early years of medical training. It goes on to follow the development of small-incision Phaco surgery, instigated by Charlie Kelman, and the disinterest and contempt held by the peers of these ophthalmologic pioneers. The author describes every advance in this field of ophthalmology in fascinating detail. The importance to Eric of religion, spirituality, family life and helping others less fortunate than himself is reinforced in this enthralling and at times very amusing read. Arnott draws you into his narrative, rousing thoughts of disbelief as you are compelled to continue reading, each new chapter and event in his life proving as fascinating as the last. Entertaining and illuminating, A New Beginning in Sight provides a detailed history of ophthalmology and is essential reading for ophthalmologists, other specialists and non-specialists alike.

In A New Beginning, Lee Joel Tiru courageously opens his heart and mind to the emotional and physical challenges he faced as a morbidly obese youngster and teenager. While it is no longer uncommon for one to admit to being fat, it is quite rare for one to lay oneself open, so the reader can sense his heartache and desperation and share equally in his joys and triumphs. Lee Tiru knows whereof he speaks; he offers a textbook example of how to set a course for changing ones life and for reaching and exceeding powerful life goals. He does not beat the reader perhaps equally obese as he once was over the head to change, but lays out reasonable challenges nonetheless to leave the reader with hope that there is life beyond misery. His words are applicable to any of lifes difficulties: set a goal and persevere, always mindful of victory.

This book is a postmodern analysis of Ronald Reagan's 1984 film, A New Beginning, which marked the coming-of-age of the televisual political campaign film. The film was a landmark in the art of political filmmaking. Its thesis proclaimed a resurgence of American pride, patriotism, and prosperity under the leadership of Ronald Reagan. A New Beginning was unprecedented for a number of reasons: it replaced the traditional nominating speech for the candidate at the Republican National Convention; its form was a hybrid documentary and advertisement; it illustrated the use of televisual rebirth rhetoric to gain public support for a political ideology; and, most importantly, the masterful project documented a shift from verbal to visual rhetoric in American presidential campaigning. The author examines the film as a cultural text and as an effective political tool. Framing, ideology, myth, and visual cliché are analytic tools used to deconstruct the film; the method combines rhetorical theory with communication theory and semiotically-based theories of film and television. Morreale gives insight into the increasingly prevalent use of television to create a political reality.

Challenging a medical model which has supplied few effective answers to long-standing conundrums, Evolutionary Psychiatryproposes a new conceptual framework for psychiatry based on Darwinian theory. Anthony Stevens and John Price argue that psychiatric symptoms are manifestations of ancient adaptive strategies which are no longer necessarily appropriate but which can best be understood and treated in an evolutionary and developmental context. They propose theories to account for the widespread existence of affective disorders, borderline states and schizophrenia, as well as offering solutions for puzzles such as sadomasochism and the function of dreams. This comprehensive introduction to the new science of Darwinian Psychiatry is readily accessible to both the specialist and non-specialist reader. It describes in detail the disorders and conditions commonly encountered in psychiatric practice and show how evolutionary theory can account for their biological origins and functional nature.

Love Never Fails began when twenty-seven-year-old Metropolitan Police Commander Amanda Dansie, on a drugs case, was unexpectedly attacked. Her right knee was shattered by a bullet and four members of her team were killed. Four years previously she had blamed Colonel Mark Young for negligence when her fiancé, whom she had known for twenty years, was killed with two of his colleagues in an explosion in Afghanistan. She had forbidden Mark to come to Andrew's funeral service. After she and her team were attacked, she realized how wrong and unfair she had been to Mark. She came to Derbyshire to recuperate with the intention of contacting him to ask his forgiveness. Unknown to her, when his time was up in Afghanistan, by virtue of his army training and expertise he has joined the Derbyshire police as an Inspector. However, Amanda eventually contacted him and they met a few days before Mark was promoted to Chief Superintendent. They fell in love. When her aunt, Contessa Sophie Gambetti, died, Amanda inherited her fortune, and she had already bought Amanda a twenty-bedroom manor house in Derbyshire. Amanda and Mark married; and they had twins then triplets. Love Never Fails ended with Amanda giving birth to Luca.

The bear took a couple of steps away from the twitching remains of the body and dug its claws into the dirt as it loped toward me. I knew I should turn and try to run for my life as fast as I could, but I was paralyzed. The animal halted a few feet away. I could smell and see the fresh blood dripping from its sharp canines in its slightly open mouth. The animal leaned back as it bore its long nails into the grass, tearing up the dirt and leaving the ground beneath it bare. I knew exactly what was going to happen to me next. The animal was going to attack with its claws and teeth. I was going to die. It was as simple as that. With a final helpless mental plea to my legs, though an unsuccessful one, the animal pulled his bloodstained lips back from his teeth before he lunged at my head. Once I saw the back legs leave the ground, adrenaline surged through my veins. Right away, I raised my arms to shield my face, but I wasnt quick enough before the bear made contact. -from New Beginning

The time is ripe for a bold new initiative to recast the U.S.-Japan economic relationship for the 21st century. A new Japan is emerging. Foreign investment is on the rise. Tokyo is deregulating and restructuring its economy. A new generation of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists has emerged. But a more vibrant, sustainable Japanese economy is threatened by the crushing weight of Japans mounting public debt, the burden of its aging and shrinking population and the cumulative toll of years of economic stagnation. New governments in Washington and Tokyo have a unique opportunity to reinvigorate the U.S.-Japan relationship and to accelerate the pace and redirect the nature of change in the Japanese economy by creating a U.S.-Japan " open marketplace" --free of tariffs, with minimal regulatory impediments and an increasing freedom to do business--by the year 2010. This effort would include harmonization and mutual recognition of domestic regulations, meaningful enforcement of competition policy, deeper restructuring of the Japanese economy, and a dramatic increase in Japanese imports and greater acceptance of foreign investment. In this effort, the United States must assert its economic self-interest through new structural and sectoral trade initiatives and stepped up multilateral market-opening pressure through cases brought to the World Trade Organization. A New Beginning: Recasting the U.S.-Japan Economic Relationship, by Bruce Stokes, is a road map for U.S.-Japan economic relations in the 21st century.

Things are going quite well for Elliot and Razor until someone frames Razor for a rape and murder. All of their friends on the police force turn against them. Razor is convicted and sent to prison for life while Elliot takes over their criminal operation. A few days later, Elliot returns to his office suite and finds a stranger. At the point of Elliot's bodyguard's gun and the threat of death, the stranger states he is Elliot's old friend, Razor. After hours of interrogation, Elliot, still skeptical, must agree the stranger knows too much about Elliot and their lives to be anyone else. The stranger tells Elliot about being in prison and approached by one of the inmates with a proposal to provide Razor with an escape and a fool-proof new identity for twenty-five percent of Razor's Cincinnati operation. Elliot purposely commits a brazen daylight murder with plenty of witnesses, allows the police to arrest him and the court to convict him. This time, Razor has the prison watched and when Elliot escapes, they follow him all the way to a small coastal town in North Carolina. Elliot undergoes the transformation to a new identity and returns to Razor in Cincinnati. This is when the plan falls apart. E-mail your opinions of this book to [email protected]
