The development of wireless telecommunication and ubiquitous computing te- nologies has led to a growing mobile population and dramatically changed p- terns of working and everyday life. A smooth and safe mobility is only possible when the mobile person is well-informed of the happenings in his ambient en- ronments. Location-sensitive maps have proved a strong enhancement to what a mobile user can directly perceive from his ambient environments. Since ancient times the map has been the favorite communication language of spatial infor- tion. It is even more the case for mobile applications where brand-new maps can be wirelessly retrieved or generated in real-time. The upsurge of map-based s- vices on mobile devices has raised a number of new questions challenging the conventional computer-assisted cartography. Map-based mobile services provides a contemporary overview of research and development issues related to the design and the use of mobility-supporting maps. The book has been written for professional cartographers who are striving for - tending their theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge to mobile m- making, for surveyors and geo-service providers involved in the development of intelligent location-based services, for software developers and cognitive scientists engaged in human-computer interaction, and for students and academics in cart- raphy and geoinformation sciences. The book was initiated by the multidisciplinary workshop “Design of m- based mobile services” within the frame of the conference “Human and Computer 2003 – Interaction on the movement” held in Stuttgart, Germany, September 2003.

This book includes extended versions of the selected papers from VISIGRAPP 2009, the International Joint Conference on Computer Vision, Imaging and Computer Graphics Theory and Applications, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, during February 5–8, 2009 and organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). VISIGRAPP comprises three component conferences, namely, the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications (VISAPP), the International Conference on Computer Graphics Theory and Applications (GRAPP), and the International Conference on Imaging Theory and Applications (IMAGAPP). VISIGRAPP received a total of 422 paper submissions from more than 50 co- tries. From these, and after a rigorous double-blind evaluation method, 72 papers were published as full papers. These figures show that this conference is now an - tablished venue for researchers in the broad fields of computer vision, computer graphics and image analysis. From the full papers, 25 were selected for inclusion in this book. The selection process was based on the scores assigned by the Program Committee reviewers as well as the Session Chairs. After selection, the papers were further revised and extended by the authors. Our gratitude goes to all contributors and referees, without whom this book would not have been possible.

With the latest developments in technology, new services are being invented which were not even possible some years ago. As new devices, applications and services emerge, also the number of mobile users is increasing in a rapid manner. Mobile broadband networks like UMTS, EDGE or Wireless LAN make it possible to reach a large group of users who gain access with their personal mobile devices, equipped with multimedia and data capabilities. Due to this development, new interesting possibilities arise for many areas. One of these areas is the tourism sector, which is being referred to in this thesis. The so-called m-tourism (mobile tourism) is an emerging field with an enormous marketing potential, as described in Chapter 2. Recent hardware inventions and developments are greatly pushing the market share. Companies are offering tailored products filling the needs of their customers. Personalization of services becomes a popular trend in this sector. But what do users think about such a mobile tourism service? Do they feel the service has added benefits, compared to traditional media and Web-based services? Are those products really user friendly? What would be the crucial applications and qualities that make the big difference ? A range of usability issues concerning mobile services is being discussed in the science community; are there already viable, good solutions? With the recent hype of so-called location based services, the consumer keeps calling for more usable products, featuring more intuitive interfaces. Others may fear being overwhelmed with features. Especially for the senior users, a relatively big target group for most mobile applications, these products often remain a mystery. Usability has been and should always remain a key element for quality software and successful applications. In this thesis, several applications are described, some of their user interfaces are analyzed and major flaws discovered. Furthermore, a corresponding prototype user interface is introduced with a specific analysis of each development step, taken from the book The Usability Engineering Lifecycle by Deborah J. Mayhew. "This publication presents a multimodal architecture for use in mobile scenarios such as shopping and navigation. It also analyses a wide range of feasible modality input combinations for these contexts. For this purpose, two interlinked demonstrators were designed for stand-alone use on mobile devices. Of particular importance was the design and implementation of a modality fusion module capable of combining input from a range of communication modes like speech, handwriting, and gesture. The implementation is able to account for confidence value biases arising within and between modalities and also provides a method for resolving semantically overlapped input. Tangible interaction with real-world objects and symmetric multimodality are two further themes addressed in this work. This work concludes with the results from two usability field studies that provide insight on user preference and modality intuition for different modality combinations, as well as user acceptance for anthropomorphized objects."
