Now restored to print--the acclaimed second novel by the National Book Award--winning author of Dale Loves Sophie to Death and The Evidence Against Her. Claudia and Avery Parks, lovers since high school, are now in their thirties. Intelligent, charming, sympathetic, they seem to be the ideal couple, the perfect dinner-party guests, almost everything people should be--except responsible. They are causally yet cruelly oblivious to the ways in which their words and actions affect other people, most particularly their talented 11-year-old daughter, who suffers the misfortune of being treated by her parents not as a child but as an equal. An engrossing domestic tale by a novelist of the first rank--an ideal selection for reading groups. Robb Forman Dew's first novel, Dale Loves Sophie to Death, received the National Book Award in 1982.

The author of these two novellas, Lou Andreas SalomÈ, is not as well known through her own writing as through her friendships with such men as Friedrich Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke, Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber, et al. and on whom she had significant influence. As one of the first women to study at a European university, her relationships with men differed vastly from those of other women of her time, and one might count her among the avant-garde of the women's movement. Fenitschka, the first of the two stories in this volume, is based on an experience in Lou SalomÈ's life which gave rise to the libretto of the better known of two operas, Lulu by Alan Berg. The second opera entitled Deviations was written only a few years ago by the Italian composer and conductor Guiseppe Sinopoli. Whereas the first work bears only a very slightóand less than favorableóresemblance to the character of this exceptional woman, the second, though not a chronological account of her life, captures her spirit much more faithfully and once again bears witness to the fact that she aroused and stimulated the creativity of those whose lives she touched.

CARTOGRAPHIA offers a stunning array of 200 of the most beautiful, important, and fascinating maps in existence, from the world's largest cartographic collection, at the Library of Congress. These maps show how our idea of the world has shifted and grown over time, and each map tells its own unique story about nations, politics, and ambitions. The chosen images, with their accompanying stories, introduce the reader to an exciting new way of "reading" maps as travelogues---living history from the earliest of man's imaginings about planet earth to our current attempts at charting cyberspace. Among the rare gems included in the book are the Waldseemuller Map of the World from 1507, the first to include the designation "America"; pages from the Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570, considered the first modern atlas; rare maps from Africa, Asia, and Oceania that challenge traditional Western perspectives; William Faulkner's hand-drawn 1936 map of the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi; and even a map of the Human Genome. In an oversized format, with gorgeous four-color reproductions throughout, Catrographia will appeal to collectors, historians, and anyone looking for a perfect gift.
