What do yin-yang and the Lorenzian butterfly in chaos have in common? The outside perspective. Only by going very far outside ? beyond the end of the world ? do certain aspects of the world become intelligible. The computer makes it possible today to go after the interface. What does the world look like if you are an internally chaotic part? Is the world just a difference, an interface, a forcing function? Is it possible to identify those features which exist only from the inside? How far does the meta-unmaskability go? Is quantum mechanics a virtual reality? Can the micro-interface be manipulated? Such questions are tackled in this fascinating book.

A new theory of culture presented with a new method achieved by comparing closely the art and science in 20th century Austria and Hungary. Major achievements that have influenced the world like psychoanalysis, abstract art, quantum physics, Gestalt psychology, formal languages, vision theories, and the game theory etc. originated from these countries, and influence the world still today as a result of exile nurtured in the US. A source book with numerous photographs, images and diagrams, it opens up a nearly infinite horizon of knowledge that helps one to understand what is going on in today’s worlds of art and science.

In our daily lives we conceive of our surroundings as an objectively given reality. The world is perceived through our senses, and ~hese provide us, so we believe, with a faithful image of the world. But occ~ipnally we are forced to realize that our senses deceive us, e. g. , by illusions. For a while it was believed that the sensation of color is directly r~lated to the frequency of light waves, until E. Land (the inventor of the polaroid camera) showed in detailed experiments that our perception of, say, a colored spot depends on the colors of its surrounding. On the other hand, we may experience hallucinations or dreams as real. Quite evidently, the relationship between the "world" and our "brain" is intricate. Another strange problem is the way in which we perceive time or the "Now". Psychophysical experiments tell us that the psychological "Now" is an extended period of time in the sense of physics. The situation was made still more puzzling when, in the nineteen-twenties, Heisenberg and others realized that, by observing processes in the microscopic world of electrons and other elementary particles, we strongly interfere with that world. The outcome of experiments - at least in general - can only be predicted statistically. What is the nature ofthis strange relationship between "object" and "observer"? This is another crucial problem of the inside-outside or endo-exo dichotomy.

Chaos in science has always been a fascinating realm since it challenges the usual scientific approach of reductionism. While carefully distinguishing between complexity, holism, randomness, incompleteness, nondeterminism and stochastic behaviour the authors show that, although many aspects of chaos have been phenomenologically understood, most of its defining principles are still difficult to grasp and formulate. Demonstrating that chaos escapes all traditional methods of description, the authors set out to find new methods to deal with this phenomenon and illustrate their constructive approach with many examples from physics, biology and information technology. While maintaining a high level of rigour, an overly complicated mathematical apparatus is avoided in order to make this book accessible, beyond the specialist level, to a wider interdisciplinary readership.

"Coined by artist and media researcher Bill Seaman, 'neosentience' describes a new branch of scientific inquiry related to artificial intelligence. This volume explores the groundbreaking work of Seaman and chaos physicist Otto E. Rossler in exploring the potential of an intelligent robotic entity possessed of a form of sentience that ever-more-closely resembles that of a human being. Individual chapters approach the concept from a range of disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and the arts. Neosentience is a burgeoning area of interest, and this book encourages readers to reflect on how we experience and interpret the world, how memory works, and what it is to be human. The study addressed in this 'book' puts forward a project that is twofold. Firstly, it discusses the conceptual basis within which it would be possible for the construction of a 'neosentient' system, a machine endowed with the capacity to perceive or feel things in the world, as if manifesting a proto form of (artificial) consciousness. Secondly, it hypothesizes about the rising of benevolence through the interaction/intra-action, between 'neosentient' machines and their environment, which include us, human beings, as inhabitants. The manuscript tackles its task in a very particular manner as it interrelates a constellation of ideas in order to address key research agendas on the fields of language, aesthetics, philosophy, biology, physics, science, technology, mind and consciousness to name some. The goal of the book is not to define the structure within which such an engine could be built, it does not bring into light the blueprint of such an, but it nails down key concepts from a broad range of topics, mapping a path for future research, reinforcing this way the sense of feasibility of its enterprise. In doing so, the book illuminates trajectories, ramifications or even non-directly correlated ideas that would pass unnoticed to the reader's mind, were not by the authors generously bringing into play sets of key scholars, theories, discoveries, even speculative ideas"--Provided by publisher.

There are very few concepts that fascinate equally a theoretical physicist studying black holes and a patient undergoing seriolls mental psychosis. Time, undoubtedly, can well be ranked among them. For the measure of time inside a black hole is no less bizarre than the perception of time by a schizophrenic, who may perceive it as completely "suspended," "standing still," or even "reversing its direction. " The nature of time is certainly shrouded in profound mystery. This, perhaps, since the concept entails multifarious, and occasionally incongruous, facets. No wonder the subject attracts the serious attention of scholars on the one hand, and of the lay public on the other. Our Advanced Research Workshop is an excellent il lustration of this point, as the reader will soon discover. It turned out to be a unique professional forum for an unusually lively, effective and fruitful exchange of ideas and beliefs among 48 participants from 20 countries worldwide, selected out of more than a hundred applicants. The present book is based on the select talks presented at the meeting, and aims to provide the interested layperson and specialist alike with a multidisciplinary sampling of the most up-to-date scholarly research on the nature of time. It represents a coherent, state-of-the-art volume showing that research relevant to this topic is necessarily interdisciplinary and does not ignore such delicate issues as "altered" states of consciousness, religion and metaphysics.

This book provides the reader with the most recent scholarly insights into the nature of time - undoubtedly one of the most profound mysteries that science has ever faced. The selected contributions are grouped into four conceptually different yet mutually cohesive chapters, carefully woven into a comprehensive whole that goes well beyond standard treatments. The subjects discussed include the fine structure of psychological time(s) and consciousness, novel algebraic geometrical and number theoretic models of time dimension, different arrows of time, time travel, EPR paradox, quantum non-locality, pregeometry, and a host of relevant epistemological and ontological issues. The book shows that research is becoming necessarily interdisciplinary and does not ignore even such delicate issues as "altered" states of consciousness, religion and metaphysics. Although focused primarily on an academic readership, the treatise can be read with profit by anyone fascinated by the enigma of time.

The structural aspects of composite quantum systems in the foundation, interpretation and application of quantum theory is an increasingly prominent topic of physics research. As an emerging field, it seeks to understand the origins of the classical world of experience from the quantum level. Quantum Structural Studies presents conceptual fundamentals and mathematical methods for investigating the structuring of quantum systems into subsystems. Split into four sections, the topics covered include the historical and philosophical aspects of quantum structures, specific interpretive approaches and ontologies, and alternative methodological approaches to quantum mechanics. Questions addressed are: Can the classically relevant degrees of freedom (such as the center of mass) be considered physically realistic, and if so, in what sense? In what sense might various emergent structures be relevant for the transition from the quantum description to the classical?Do suggested new approaches describe phenomenology and proposals for new experiments? Specialists, graduate students and researchers seeking an introduction to the field of emergent structures and new directions for research and experimentation can use this book to find up-to-date representative texts and reviews.

These proceedings deal with a selection of papers presented at the 8th International Conference CASYS’07, on COMPUTING ANTICIPATORY SYSTEMS, 6-11 August 2007, held at HEC Management School - University of Liege, Liège, Belgium. The content of these proceedings deals with the most recent Research & Development in the area of theoretical developments and applications in the modelling and computing of anticipation in any fields of natural and artificial systems. A computing anticipatory system is a system that computes its current states in taking into account its past and present states but also its potential future states. Strong anticipation refers to an anticipation of events built by or embedded in a system. Weak anticipation refers to an anticipation of events predicted or forecasted from a model of a system. This volume contains the first invited lecture “Neural Approach to Machine Consciousness”, by Prof. Dr Igor Aleksander, FREng (UK) who received the CHAOS AWARD, and the second invited lecture “Quantum Mechanics, Pattern Recognition, and the Mammalian Brain”, by Dr George Chapline (USA) who received the CASYS AWARD. The peer reviewed papers that received a BEST PAPER AWARD at CASYS’07, and some invited papers are included in these proceedings. Adel F. Antippa (Canada) and Daniel M. Dubois (Belgium) presented the continuation of their original research project on discrete physics with their third fundamental paper “Synchronous Discrete Harmonic Oscillator” that also appears in these proceedings. The interdisciplinary outstanding topics of these proceedings are readable by researchers and scientists with a university background.
