Problems in early pregnancy are among the most common conditions in gynecology and - with management becoming less invasive and depending more on accurate ultrasound and a good understanding of serum biochemistry - many countries now recommend that all maternity units have an early pregnancy section dedicated to managing these conditions. In addition to this, the subject is also an essential part of the training syllabus in the speciality of maternal-fetal medicine. Handbook of Early Pregnancy Care is a practical guide for the management of at-risk early pregnancy. The chapters are concise, well-illustrated and contain decision trees for the management of each condition. Focusing on practical management, not just research, this helpful text will be beneficial in the clinic, as contributors are encouraged to tell the readers what to do in critical situations. Covering key points and containing illustrative case studies, this handbook is relevant to trainees in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetrics, as well as nurses and sonographers who see many at-risk patients in the early stages of pregnancy. A separate chapter on multiple pregnancy has been added given that multiple pregnancies are at high risk of developing problems and therefore require greater attention. • An entire section of intrapartum problems has been added, making this a comprehensive Obstetric text. • The editors have managed to persuade leaders in the field to write for this edition. The chapters are authored by researchers working on the coalface. Their first-hand experience, knowledge, wisdom and hard work are evident in this edition.

Real-time ultrasonography has entered office practice in obstetrics and gynecology. With increasing numbers of sonography systems entering the ambulatory office setting, obstetric sonography at a routine level (level I) has largely been the targeted area. Recent developments in gynecologic real-time sonography have, however, significantly enlarged the sphere of applicability of sonographic equipment in an office setting. The very rapid growth of follicular sonography in infertility assessment and management has made real-time sonography of increasing importance to the gynecologic practitioner. In office settings like the authors', gynecologic office sonography represents close to 50% of all ordered sonography. This handbook of office sonography in obstetrics and gynecology was conceived to reflect these changes in practice patterns. This volume is not meant to replace standard sonography texts for the full-time sonographer but is instead directed toward the practicing obstetrician/gynecologist who uses real-time sonography in the office setting within the framework of daily practice. Technical comments were therefore restricted to a minimum, with practical advice and photographic examples taking their place. Most of the sonographic real-time images were retrieved from the authors' own files. However, some were obtained through the generosity of friends and colleagues, for which we would like to extend acknowledgment and appreciation. Similar appreciation is extended to Dr. Haim Elrad and Dr. Jari Friberg, who also participated in the editorial process; to Sheila Martin, who performed superbly as our editorial assistant, a most difficult responsibility; and to Hilary Evans, our editor at Plenum Publishing Corporation.

Chorion villus sampling for early diagnosis of congenital and inherited fetal abnormalities is becoming an increasingly important and popular technique. There is every likelihood it will replace amniocentesis as the first choice for prenatal diagnosis. Despite growing interest in the chorion villus sampling (C.V.S.) test, it has been difficult to acquire up-to-date information about it. This important book provides a complete overview of the test: the technique itself, interpretation and implication of the results, and the establishment of a service and comparison with other tests. Written in a clear and easy-to-read form with numerous illustrations, the book informs family practitioners, obstetricians, residents and genetic counselors about C.V.S. counseling both before referral and when the results have been received.

This comprehensive, case-based title takes a practical approach to treating the pregnant patient by illustrating common and less common issues that arise during pregnancy. Outlining how difficult it often is to discern normal changes from pathological changes in the pregnant patient, Medical Problems During Pregnancy addresses not only this core dilemma but also a full array of specific, challenging issues to consider when pregnant patients present with conditions like epilepsy, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias and renal disease – disorders requiring medication despite some risks. Although standard best practices generally determine medication use, the practicality of medication at various stages of pregnancy is highly variable. Medical Problems During Pregnancy outlines key points to consider when prescribing medication and additionally offers a range of practical suggestions that can greatly improve the physician-patient interaction. A unique and invaluable addition to the literature, Medical Problems During Pregnancy will be of great interest to practicing obstetricians, primary care clinicians, family practice physicians, nurse practitioners, and other allied health professionals.
