Im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit steht dabei die Untersuchung von Faktoren, die das Wahlverhalten beeinflussen können. So haben demographische Variablen, psychologische Konstrukte, Heterogenität in den Präferenzen von Individuen oder persönliche Erfahrungen von Konsumenten signifikante Auswirkungen auf die Wahl einer bestimmten Marke. Im Marketing ist besonders die Untersuchung des Einflusses von Faktoren wie Preisänderungen oder anderer verkaufsfördernder Maßnahmen auf das Verhalten von Konsumenten wichtig. Dadurch wird die Wirkung dieser Marketing-Mix-Elemente transparenter und sie können zukünftig effektiver und effizienter in der Preis- und Produktpolitik eingesetzt werden. Eine Marke definiert sich, als die Kombination von Eigenschaften eines Produktes oder einer Dienstleistung zur Differenzierung gegenüber Produkten und Dienstleistungen der Konkurrenten (Gabler, 1993, S. 2188). Die Marke entsteht dabei aus der Farb- und Formgebung eines Produktes und dem Produkt- oder Firmennamen. Die Bildung einer Marke entsteht durch Werbung und durch einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad des Produktes beziehungsweise der Dienstleistung. Vorteile der Markenbildung sind für den Hersteller ein bestimmtes Prestige, die Erlangung von akquisitorischem Potenzial und eine stärkere Position gegenüber dem Handel sowie der Konkurrenz. Für den Konsumenten liegen die Vor-teile in der Qualitätsgarantie, der guten Verfügbarkeit und dem bedarfsgerechten Einkauf aufgrund der guten Produktidentifikation (Wöhe, 1996). Anbieter setzen die entstandenen Markenartikel als absatzpolitisches Instrument ein, bürgen für eine gewisse Qualität und hoffen, den Konsumenten zum Wiederkauf und zur Markentreue zu bewegen. Markenpolitik, die hauptsächlich an qualitätsbewusste und prestigebewusste Nachfrager gerichtet ist, bezieht sich hauptsächlich auf sogenannte Herstellermarken. Neben diesen Marken existieren sogenannte Handelsmarken, wie ALDI-Produkte, mit dem Ziel, die preisbewussten Konsumenten anzusprechen (Wöhe, 1996).
