"Scratchings on the Wall" is a curious thing, an oddity at once strange yet familiar. Mixing personal commentary, some pithy vignettes, and three decades worth of song lyrics, Dave Winans stakes out his own claim as an honorary modern-day member of what music critic Greil Marcus refers to as the "Invisible Republic." From the opening tribute to his sister to the fond farewell to bluegrass legend John Hartford, Winans touches upon the personal and political in his search for "common sense, a kinder faith, and a little clear-eyed understanding of the craziness around us." In between are ballads, rags, dirges, talking blues and love songs about, among other things, dogs, family, God, street musicians, women and baseball.

Ramblin' on My Mind contains pieces on Ella Fitzgerald, Son House, and Robert Johnson; on the styles of vaudeville, solo guitar, and zydeco; on a comparison of blues and African music; on blues nicknames; and on lyric themes of disillusionment.

“A passionate, arresting, and entertaining book of verse . . . The images are vivid and the voice is honest and powerful” (Stephen King). This is the debut collection of poetry by singer/songwriter Ryan Adams, acclaimed for albums including Cardinology, Cold Roses, and Prisoner. His work in this volume rings with emotional authenticity—and provides perhaps an even deeper insight into the man than is revealed through the songs that have resonated with fans the world over. “Ryan Adams writes with equal parts precision and recklessness; the blood he draws from the text is easily as unnerving as its unapologetic tenderness. He is proof that poetry will find its writer.” —Mary-Louise Parker “Infinity Blues is Ryan Adams at his personal, unforgettable best. Strong and beautiful and funny and pure. Like all his work, it’s soul poetry of the highest order.” —Cameron Crowe “This is much better than reading a friend’s journal. It’s more like watching somebody you love in the bathtub talking to himself. You’re like, wow, he’s even good at taking a bath. After reading Infinity Blues (which I think is a great title), I give Ryan Adams the best compliment I ever got—and the only reason for reading anyone’s poetry. Ryan, I really like your mind.” —Eileen Myles

Since its first edition, in 1964, Dixon and Godrich's Blues and Gospel Records has been dubbed 'the bible' for collectors of pre-war African-American music. It provides an exhaustive listing of all recordings made up to the end of 1943 in a distinctively African-American musical style, excluding those customarily classed as jazz (which are the subject of separate discographies). The book covers recordings made for the commercial market (whether issued at the time or not) and also recordings made for the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Song and similar bodies -- about 20,000 titles in all, by more than 3,000 artists. For each recording session, full details are given of: artist credit, accompaniment, place and date of recording, titles, issuing company and catalogue numbers, matrix numbers and alternate takes. There are also short accounts of the major 'race labels', which recorded blues and gospel material, and a complete list of field trips to the south by travellingrecording units. Howard Rye has joined the original compilers for this thoroughly revised fourth edition. The scope has been enlarged by the addition of about 150 new artists, in addition to newly discovered recordings by other artists. Early cylinder recordings of gospel music, from the 1890s, are also included for the first time. Previous editions of this work were applauded for their completeness, accuracy, and reliability. This has now been enhanced by the addition of new information fromrecord labels and from record company files, and by listening to a wide selection of titles, and detailed cross-checking.
